Hi there

I was just wondering if someone could tell me if there should be exhaust gassess coming from underneath the cam cover on a 2.0TDI PD engine?

Since ive owned the car there has been an annoying ticking noise from the engine and I noticed that on cold mornings when its started a puff of smoke comes from the engine bay. I noticed a slight blowing coming from the pin size hole on the top of the cam cover near the breather, so i diconnected the breather and there is what seems to be exhaust gasses blowinf from inside. Ive looked at diagrams and from what i can tell there shouldnt be blowing / exhause gasses from here unless there is a leaking injector?

I dont really want to take the cover off at the moment as I dont have the cash for a new gasket yet, but i was just wondering if this was normal?

Im kind of hoping its a seal so i can finally get rid of the ticking without spending a fortune.

Ive put a picture up to show where the gasses are coming from.

Any help will be much appreciated.

its called blowby. Combustion gas slips past the piston rings and ends up in the crank case. The breather system allows the engine to vent off that gas.

Its likely worse on a cold engine and will get worse as an engine wears, but its pretty normal to have some gas coming out of there. It just depends how bad it is.

I'm not sure what the small hole is or if that should be there.

Yeah I had read about that just, I know obviously the best way to check is to take the cover off but could a leaking injector also cause this if the seal has gone? Im just thinking the ticking noise does sound like a leaking injector. Theres no loss of power or anything its just the ticking is damn annoying.

i'll move the post to the B7 section then! :p
Did i put it in the B6 section? sorry ive been having troubles with my OLED B6 telly at same time so B6 / B7 keeps getting confusing lol
