Hello guys,
I'm looking to buy an A4 from late 2006 with a BRE engine , I read all that I could from the internet.... not to many details found....
I read and see that the main problem is with the balance shaft , and with the hey ax form inside it...
What is your opinion for this engine ?
Car details :
Year : 12/2006
KM: 228 568 km
Engine : 2.0 TDI 140 hp
Engine Code: BRE
Price: 4700 Euro
One previous owner.

Thank you ,
Best regards

If it's done 228,568 KM (142,025 miles) without having failed yet, chances are it's probably one of the better ones. However you can always do the modification (£215 in parts & maybe 4-6 hours labour) when you buy the car to give yourself piece of mind.

Chances are it's a gear driven system in there at the moment being a BRE engine, so less work than converting from chain to gear. You can also use this as ammunition to haggle down the price of the car.

If you can knock off €500 and do the work yourself for €250 in parts then you've pocketed €250 and know the engine will be good from here onwards.

Also, check the seller hasn't already done the modification previously. You might be worried over something that was already fixed previously.

Don't forget the ballans shaft problem ! Read about it - look online and get it fixed before too late !

It is an Avant , the history is real (all things were done , but I did not see any thing changed at the balance shaft) is from a friend of mine who is a mechanic , I just checked the car yesterday and there is no rust , also the bushings and the arms from the weals are in good condition , it pulls like a train and it stops very well.
There are only 2 downsizes : 1) the car dose not have to many accessories (no parking sensors, no heated chairs , no Cruise Control-this I will mount it as I know how-)
2) 5 points of hail.
Pros : mechanic and optical is in good shape, drives well, and so on, I also checked the injectors see the photos.

The price can't be lowered as he know it is a good car , mechanically , and it is lower that the market price from my area (Romania)

Forgot to mention that , for changing things like:
-distribution
- ax from the balance shaft (yes it is a gear driven system)
-oil
-coolant agent
- check the injectors visually and change the gasket fro each injector
and all other stuff
He will charge me only 150 Euros.

distribution ??? looks ok from here, and i dont know what prices are like over in romania but it would be an s line over here for that money, if you like it and it seems ok go for it, all cars have horror stories to tell, no one would buy any car if they listened to every bad point on the net about them

I just want to be safe and change everything that I can.... and usually this is what is good to change wen you by a 11 year old car , distribution , in 2.0 tdi engines the ax from the balance shaft, oil and so on
Yes cars with the steering wheel on the left side are 1000 euro more expensive from the ones from UK.
I've looked on the internet there are cars with better specs (parking sensors , cruise control...) but you can never trust the millage...that is the issue that we have in Romania or Germany if it is from a dealer....and there is no way checking that....as no one goes only in the Audio garage to change their oil and so on...
Thank you for your replies, I will think a little and let you know the outcome.
