The RNS-E Sat Nav system on my A3 packed up and I rashly bought one which has the same functions and knobs and buttons and same pin diagram as my old one except that it's from a TT.

I was initially happy to see it does work but then later on have discovered it is switching itself on by itself with no one is in the car and now I notice it's draining the battery.

Can the unit be programmed to make it compatible with the A3 or do I have to sell it and purchase one from an A3? My independent Audi garage says he can try to reprogramme it but could not comment on whether or not it would work.

Please see photo of original A3 unit and the new TT head unit.

My A3 is 2006. I think the new unit is a few years younger though.

Thank you.

and if it is not compatible how easy is it to fit an after market stereo to my A3 considering the proper Audi ones are so expensive?

Thanks Fangio.

To be clear the model that you link is the one that was in the car - not working - when I bought the car a couple of years ago (I don't know whether it was the original or not).

It is the other model (which I have since learned came from a TT) that I bought from a scrap yard to replace the broken one that I am trying to make compatible with my A3.

To recap, it does work - well at least the radio does - with steering functions all working but it is coming on by itself and also draining the battery.

So the question is - is it possible to code the TT unit to make it compatible with my A3 so that it not only works but doesnt self power and drain the battery?

Is reprogramming units from one Audi model to another even something that can be done? (I'm totally ignorant of these things).

Thank you.

Yes you're correct - I had to make some 'adjustments' to the TT one to make it fit in..

I don't understand this coding business though as to what it's for and what is possible?
