strange noise

so ive got an intermittent strange noise, comes and goes without warning

it started after going over some gravelly path at High Force the other week, but went within half a mile, and didnt return.. until at the weekend when going into the lakes to climb scafell pike, and its been on and off since then

its almost like the exhaust is loose, but right near the engine so it sounds like im running without any exhaust, quite a nice grumble to be honest haha.. but strangely the majority of the time it only happens when lifting off the throttle, sometimes happens at idle too and very very occasionally when accelerating, but most the time even when it is happening at coasting or idle or changing gear it goes if i put any revs on

ive had a look under and cant see any holes or loose bits, any ideas?

Have you changed the brake pads recently by any chance?

changed the fronts a few thousand miles ago with new discs at the same time, why do you ask?

I did the same a couple of thousand miles ago and developed a metal rattle noise. It took me a month of Sundays checking all over the car to realise the rattle never happens on braking.
I whipped out the pass to find the pads all moving inside the cradle. Some people say the after market pads are not great? I used Brembo.
My answer was to spread the 3 prongs on the back of the pads or hat it creates a tighter fit and grease the pads top and bottom where it slides on the cradle.

it hardly ever happens on accelerating though, mainly just when the revs are let off like changing gear and occasionally sat at idle .. if it was brake related would it not happen whenever im not using them, regardless of revs?

It will never happen on braking as you are compressing the pads.
Mine never happened on acceleration either, it was move on bumpy roads.

i know it wouldnt happen on braking mate, dont think i worked that very well haha .. mine happens on idle as well occasionally, just sat at lights etc

it really does sound like a throaty exhaust noise to me, but ill give it a check over at the weekend anyway though mate thanks for the suggestion

Have you checked the heat shield over the exhaust around front seats level. It can deteriorate and rattle

it doesnt sound like a rattle but ill check it out again anyway.. they seemed ok but didnt inspect them too closely
