Hi all

For my brake caliper painting project I was thinking of getting some axle stands as the car will be up in the air overnight while the paint dries, and I wouldn't want to do this just on the jack all night

Never used axle stands before but these seem decent and have good reviews

Amazon product

Question is, how do you get them under? I see people saying the best place to place them is in fact the jacking points... so that means jacking up from elsewhere such as the subframe...

Anyone got pics to point out the best place to place the jack? To leave the jack point free for the stand?

And I guess you simply do one side at a time? As in, jack front left, lower onto stand, jack front right, lower onto stand?

Thanks!

EDIT: Going to be a nice hot day tomorrow so hopefully I get an answer here in time (roughly by 1AM) for guaranteed Sunday prime delivery lol

Hi mate when working on my s3, i pulled out a plastic rubber plug which is where the jack points audi would use and put the stand under there. I jacked up from the normal jacking points I've got a pic here. After you are done you can just push the rubber bungs and plastic back in

I assume it was solid, but that looks very 'on the edge' if I'm honest :D hahaa

Did the rubber plug go back in OK after?

And is the rubber plug/general area accessible without removing the wheel arch liner?

I assure you its solid mate, the car would not move, its actually where audi would put their lift jack thing into. Yeah it went in but i just placed a jack under it, line dit up and pumped the jack and it fit back in normally. Even if you dont put it back in, next time you go to audi audi will put new ones in free of charge as theyll just assume they fell out as it happens alot. Also easily accessible once you look under the car you will see how easy it is

For a golf, but same principle..

Also read your manual on jacking location, there is only one place per corner

Thanks @rajeevx5 and @umm! They both seem like good options then! :D And both much better than leaving the car on the jack overnight for the paint to dry for sure

Quite like that idea of jacking up the back and then placing it under the front jack point

EDIT: Actually that Golf method doesn't seem to allow you to do both fronts (only) at once which is what I was after

Ordered them :D

@azibux1 Please see this thread for axle stand placement suggestions with photos. Search function is your friend, there are items in the sticky threads.

http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/using-axle-stands.316494/#post-2963009

Jacking points where you lift the car up are not where the axle stands should go. @rajeevx5 option to place acle stands under the 4 post lifting points can also be used but you will need the appropriate puck.

As this theead suggests, use axle stands as well as a decent trolley jack and the car will not go anywhere. The more touch points you have holding the car firmly in place will give the novice the confidence to work around and under the car without injury or issue..

Sticky thread items here: scroll 3/4 down to bottom for "jacking points "

Thanks jungle! Those pics are great. Will get on the ground later and see if I can spot those same points :)

Back axle stand position worked perfectly! Albeit with bricks (supported by a trolley jack each side) as the stands hadn't turned up in time.

They seem solid though, will try them out on the front!

I think he meant pics of what you did with the bricks and trolley jack, not the painting. :)

Exactly..

Lol oops

Will try and grab a pic later as I haven't actually had a chance to put the wheels back yet.

But basically it is the same position as jungle pointed out in his link above... But I replaced the axle stand with three house bricks

Those stands look pretty serious mate might have to get me a set of those to replace my 20 year old Halford's specials which at the time came free with a trolley jack I bought !

Hey, thanks for the pictures!

A couple of quick questions, between the bricks and the car, is that a piece of rubber you put there? I personally would avoid using bricks, some can be brittle and crack as not all bricks are equal.. but I love your ingenuity

Did you find the subframe suitable to hold the weight of the car using the stands? Obviously you did it, but thoughts on suitably?

Ha do it! They are solid!! Rated at 3 tonnes per stand I believe.

Can you see the Amazon link above for them? I think my ad blocker strips it out but should be visible for others.

Only thing to note is that as the Amazon reviews state, minimum height is about 12 inches so have to get the jack pretty high to get them under.

The thing is that the 2 tonne ones were only about 3cm shorter and more money...So was a no brainer to simply get these 3 tonne ones.

I easily justified the £18 even for the amount I'll use them (not much)... With the amount of work you do on your rocket it should be an even easier purchase lol.

No worries.

The rubber piece is already there attached to the car. I believe someone above said it is where audi place the rear arms on their lifts when they service the car etc.

Subframe suitability... Perfect I'd say! Solid as a rock.

Only thing worth noting is mentioned in the quote above in my reply to Rob. They are tall so you have to jack quite high.

Also when I'd done drivers side, dropped the jack, went to do passenger side and as I was jacking the drivers stand began tilting onto just two legs. So I then stopped and got my second trolley jack and lifted the driver side off the stand. Lifted the passenger side, placed the stand then got my dad to help so I could drop both sides onto the stands simultaneously.

Will do the reverse of the above of course to take them out.

I'm not sure if the tilting was because of the height involved...But thinking about it, was probably more than likely the slight incline of my driveway (somewhat unavoidable).
I logged in just to give a thumbs up, first clear picture I've actually seen of where stands should go.
Ha thanks! :D I went off @jungle650's pic on the other thread. I find pics like this very helpful for first timers like myself with jobs like this so figured I'd post my attempt up!

Are these the best points to lift the car with a 4 points lift front at the plastic round and back at the rectangle bloc

Back, yes

Front, I wouldn't lift from there personally... See post 17 for the location I used and would recommend
