Hi All,

I have just replaced my engine coolant temperature sensor (the one on the right hand side) of my Audi 8P S3.

A fair amount of coolant poured out in between the old being removed and the new going on, and I topped it up with the amount I thought would have been lost.

I started the car up with no problems, and it pulled through the coolant in the reservoir, still leaving enough above min. after a short time, 10 secs maybe, I turned the engine off, and the radiator fans have carried on running.

Ive topped up to max again and after about an hour started it up again, and turned off, the fans kept running again, seems to run on for about 5 mins.

Why is it doing this, will it resolve itself once its recognised the new coolant in place, or is the sensor not reading?

I think it will resolve itself once you get the engine up to temp and the ECU recognises that it is not losing water and overheating.

Yes it is OEM, although I took it for a short drive and the temp sensor didn't move, got a replacement today and its reading ok. Although the engine management light is on the dash! Will get it on VCDS and take a look.

thanks for the replies!

Also for anyone planning on changing this sensor, one thing I didn't read anywhere that would help, is that when you remove the old sensor the rubber o-ring will stay in place, you need to fish it out before you place the new sensor (with o-ring in place)! sounds obvious, but I hadn't noticed if it had fallen out and with coolant p******g out I just popped the new one in :(

The fans run constant with aircon switched on, so make sure it's off or it will confuse you.

Don't need air con on in this weather! The fans have stopped overrunning now I have the replacement sensor in, but when they were running it was very audible, a lot more than the normal AC noise. Just have the EML on the dash, but will connect it tonight and see.

I just thought you might have had the aircon on by mistake .

We use the aircon in the winter as it's also a de-humidifier when it's raining and have a car full of heavy breathers, keeps the windows mist free.

It was a reasonable point, but it was definitely kicking out beyond the ac noise.

Looks like it's all sorted itself out now, the EML has gone off, temperature is reading fine and the fans work like usual.

Thanks for all of your input and help!
