is this normal, the oil cap doesn't click in or screw in, the sort of sits in and twists round doesn't actually lock in when twisted, can be pulled straight off, once off there is a filter looking part underneath

p.s i can't upload a phot because i don't know how. when you click on the upload button you get the tab appear under this text box saying insert a photo/ video but theres no option to actually insert a photo, (I'm using a mac) copying and pasting doesn't work either, two birds with one stone here ;)

well forget what i was saying i found the upload image box

Press the cap you took off into the cap/mesh thing thats in there, then the whole thing should unscrew :)

This often happens if the engine cover is taken off at an angle. It catches the top of the cap dislodging it.
Try putting the cap on again when the engine is warm as it will turn round easier. Remember anti clockwise to undo. Once off you can click it all back together properly.

Sounds like your cap has come apart, it's in two peices , that's why you can see the mesh filter. Just buy a new one. The bit of mayo is caused by condensation, oil and water mixed together, short journeies in the winter cause that and nought to worry about.

Clean it off and put it back again! You can take the cap to bits again to realign it properly.
Just make sure the oil is changed at least annually rather than if is on the long life system. However, I would still use the longlife oil.

As you said earlier, the dipstick area looks fine. Chances are that whoever changed the oil took the cap off, refilled the sump then put the cap back on without cleaning it.
Give it a clean then monitor it. One of the things we do when looking at a 2nd car is to check dip stick and oil cap. I have seen some nasty sights over the years.
