Hi
So I have a new car which is starting to throw up some seemingly common issues.. This is on an s3 8l.

Firstly, the engine temp gauge isn't working correctly, or something isn't. It barely goes off the line until I am on idle where it may go up a bit.. Or I find its jumped to 90 and all's well.

Secondly, all was fine the other day until I went to refuel. It's been given the correct fuel as usual, but on start up, the revs went high (like cold choke) then the engine light came on.
This was shortly followed by a warning of mph.. No clue why there. That went away after hitting the stalk button a few times.
We checked the engine and all the levels were fine. But on further restarts it still starts with a higher rpm.
The car drives fine but maybe less power. The engine wasn't hot but fan was running when we pulled over.

Any ideas? I have it booked in for a check over anyway late next week but don't want to drive if it's going to cause damage!

I'm no expert but I put unleaded in mine when I first got it and it caused issues because the car had been mapped to use higher octane shell V power / tesco momentum etc. Did you use normal 95 unleaded?

If you have an engine management light there will be associated fault code, which will point you in the right direction.

Thanks.
As far as I know the car is completely standard. Certainly feels that way.
Ive had the car for 2 weeks and have refuelled twice before, all on premium unleaded.
It was the 1st thing I was told to do..
Im getting her plugged in soon so hopefully will have an idea.

Engine temp issue will most likely be the coolant temp sensor (CTS) and/or thermostat...

Need to scan for fault codes realistically... your idle problem could be related to the CTS issue as if the ECU thinks the engine is still below operating temp then it may still be in a cold start cycle and raise the idle RPM accordingly

One thing thats almost a prerequisite when owning an 8L is having a version of VCDS available for fault code scans

<tuffty/>

Cool, well we'll see what comes up then.
The high revs is a new thing as took it on a long drive a few days before with lots of restarts and all was ok.
Ive never had such a fussy car when it comes to sensors!

Or look through the history of this group 'before' buying one ....

Although, to be fair, Ive spent most of the time , chasing down and rectifying ****-up's by the car's previous owners , from coolant leaks on the heater bulk head feed's , wrong suspension parts, to never being serviced and strange things , like the small return pipe parting from the coolant tank ... molded pipe broke off the tank ...

you could consider a simple ebay blu tooth odb2 reader and "android torque lite" to view the ECU Fault Codes - it wont be able to clear ABS and AIRBAG Faults like VCDS but is a handy tool to easily view some ECU info, faults and clear them.

The problem with forums is that not everyone uses them. My partner doesn't.
And unfortunately every car has issues. My other car is known to have a weak engine, but it didn't stop me and it went to 125,000 miles before something else decided time was up.

It is a shame though that some people can't look after cars properly and leave others to spend their life fixing it!

I have 3 local tuners who can plug her in at a low cost so will stick with that for now. Just hate not knowing!

I brought one of the blue tooth plug ins and down loaded the app to my mobile phone .. you never know when one of those pesky error 1201 are going to flag up when your trying to land the dam thing ... )

Hmm.. May have to invest in something like that above..

It won't be as cheap and instant as £3.99 for blutooth odb2 reader and free android torque lite or £5 for an akl lead and free VCDS lite installed on a laptop ;)

Scanning your Audi S3 8L will be a regular event

Ha! No.. I will definitely look into getting one. One place charges £60 for diagnostics. Only had to go once in the past thankfully.

Blimey, I thought most people charged £20 to read and clear the faults.

If you get one and it works okay, you can pay 1.67 and get android torque pro and then download a free "track recorder" and put that on your dash videoing the road ahead with overlayed dials and read extra sensors like the turbo boost sensor. Example from YouTube
