Hi I’m thinking of buying my first A6 and looking at a 2012 3.0TDI Quattro s Line Avant with S Tronic gearbox with 93k. What do I look for as I’m coming from a A4 1.8t quatttro with manual gearbox so this is completely different. It has a full Audi service history and all the gadgets but how reliable is the 3.0 v6 TDI engine and the S Tronic gearbox? Also is it possible the change the front bumper to the facelift one? Any comments and help would be great

The S-Tronic gearbox oil should have been changed every 37,000 miles. The owner may have been asked whether they wanted this recommended service activity or not.
Depending on the driving pattern and what fuel has been used, you might expect problems with a gummed up swirl flap. The EGR cooler is known to give problems. Otherwise the engine is pretty bomb-proof - they're designed for German motorways.
I've had my low-mileage (35,000) car for only a few months, so too early to encounter the above problems.

On the test drive check for gearbox behaviour when pulling away from rest, generally smooth gearchanges, firm braking in a straight line etc.
Check the ride quality on those 20" alloys. The ad says the mirrors have a memory function, but I suspect not with fully electric seats.

I have the same car except not Quattro. It too is a 12-reg car, I've had it since late 2013. Why so long! Because I can't bear to part with it.
Fabulous long-legged cruiser, sublime effortless engine. OK it's only done 68K miles, but the only problem I've had is a new wiper motor last year, hardly earth shattering, £90 online from Germany and easy fit yourself.
Gorgeous car, and 50+ mpg on a long run.

Well I’m now the new owner of a A6 c7 3.0TDI quattro Avant (245) Only thing is it didn’t have the owners manuals with it so it going to be a google job.lol I do have one question though, the mirrors auto fold in when I locked it with the fob but don’t unfold when I open it, is this right?

Yeah, only unfold when you start the engine. Well, mine does.

Did look at whether it was possible to code the unfold on unlock, needed third party hardware.

I find it useful as it's a visual indicator whether the car is unlocked.

Congrats, BTW

Is this the 240/245 ps version or 272? Both are great engines and quattro is superb. I’ve had 4 3.0Tdi quattro best was Bi Turbo 313 Ps. S Tronic had issues and on A7 switched to Tiptronic for a while due to problems I believe in 2012/13. As for the bumper my advice would be to leave it alone OEM is best.

It’s the 245 version, did look at a few bi Turbos but they didn’t have fsh so wasn’t taking a risk. Yeah think I’ll leave the bumper and may just change the grill and badges to black ones.

So got illuminated interior door handles but they are so weak you can’t see them in the dark! I’ve turned the knob to max and the dash is bright but the rest of the ambient leds and so weak. Any ideas?

After 8 years is there muck on bulbs.. similar ...rear camera lenses need cleaning off regularly.

So had time now to give her a wash and clean inside and noticed something that I’m not sure is right. She’s got privacy glass fitted on the back windows but the rear window seems to be plain glass like the windscreen, is this right or should it be tinted like the rear side windows?

Do you mean the glass on the hatch or the rear doors? My hatch is clear glass, my rear doors have privacy glass.

Factory fit privacy in that era was all rear side windows and tailgate. If the tailgate is clear I would check they are all same glass and/or maybe a part aftermarket fitment.

Privacy Glass was option code 4KF

"4KF Privacy glass. Dark tinted rear and rear-side windows (from B-pillar backwards)"

Ok I’ll check the option sticker. Think I’ll get the tailgate glass tinted to match.

Weird things do happen on the production line.

I have wood interior trim. A couple of veneer pieces on the side of the centre console do not match the other panels - and I shudder to think of the rectification cost.
Why wasn't it noticed at the time....?

Not as bad as the Ford Escort that had a disk brake on one side of the front axle and a drum on the other.

So went looking for the options sticker and I found this which probably explains why the rear tailgate isn’t tinted.

Some years ago, posh estate cars were frequently smashed by opportunist thieves searching for high-tech company laptops.

Or as my local bodyshop said to me, there are few cars over 5 years old that have not had paint applied to them at some stage.

I’ve went over the car before I bought it and no evidence of a respray or rear end shunt. Anyway I’ve gone though the paperwork that came with the car and there’s a receipt for a rear window. Why it was replace with the same privacy glass I don’t know. I’m going to get it tinted as I’m guessing it would be expensive to replace with the proper glass.

So my first mod done and well happy as only cost me £30 for a secondhand genuine set off eBay

Also got some Bosch wiper blades but wish I hadn’t wasted my money as I can’t get them to fit!! Going to get Audi ones as never had a problem with them.

Also found out I have MMI 3G+ but have no idea what that means or if it’s any good? Been told it will need a update so how do I do that?

So a update on wiper blades. Took them back to Halfords and it turns out the plastic clip wasn’t made properly so wouldnt go on. Go another one and it went straight on without a hitch. So fitted the fan jet windscreen washers I ordered. So what next, anyone got any ideas for cheapest mods?

The only mods I done to my car are a dashcam, a new set of carpets to replace the worn ones that came with the car (the Audi Exclusive carpets were £475 and the quality was no better then standard) and putting the car on 17" wheels to improve the ride quality.

Where did you get the fan jet washer from? my passenger side one is a fan one but driver side one is 3 jet type, which is rubbish.

So had the car back from the dealer and it turns out the oil and coolant leak was the oil cooler which has been replaced.
