3.0 tdi cleaning cylinder heads???

After removing the intake manifolds I noticed a few ports on the heads have a large build up of carbon deposits.

Has anyone tried cleaning these up whilst the heads are still on the car?
Perhaps with some kind of treatment?
Like I said some are fine but others are really bad.

I cleaned all my ports when I did my EGR blank/delete.
Fiddly & time consuming, but I used diesel, paint brush & cloth. & fingers

that's a good shout cheers. Going to delete the EGR while I'm at it.

Was looking into using a blaster with crushed up walnuts, I've seen it done on youtube the results are amazing.

I had the EGR deleted with a ST1 remap, fitted a home made plate (baked bean tin)
No flat spots or hesitancy, happy daze.
