New rules are pathetic aren't they. The VED is to help incentivise cleaner cars. Why does having leather seats have any bearing on it?!

As AB eloquently put it...thieving b....

So may as well go BIG lol. If you buy a used Nissan 370Z with a 3696cc engine today you'd pay £500 tax per year for as long as you own it, if you buy a used one that is registered after April 2017 (let the first owner take the £1700 hit) you'll only pay £140 per year! the same as someone who has a little 1.4 engine :D

The tax was what put me off buying one a few years back :)

By the way, what is the total cost of your car with all it's options. I reckon around a basic of around £38k. Certainly will be a nice car if you like or need all the options you have specified. I hope it's blow £40k and is registered before 1 April 2017 otherwise you will be paying an extra £310 per year for 5 years in road tax. Now all we have to do is wait for around 3 months for delivery but at least we both have a nice A3 to keep us going!

It'll be before April certainly - I'm actually a bit worried that it might come too early if anything. The list price is over £40k, but I've got a reasonable discount which takes it well below that, so I'm not sure which price counts for the tax to be honest.

Edit: Having read the article, I wouldn't be included anyway. It doesn't including the things like registration fee, delivery charge etc, which takes it below the £40k regardless of discount.

Glad to hear that. My dealer is quoting 3 months for delivery so if I place my order next week that should mean mid February. Even though I have a personal plate it may be worth wait a couple a weeks to get the new registration time as I'm told it can make a difference to the trade-in value.
It would be interesting to get an answer as to whether the 'value' is full dealer price or 'price after discount' It should really be the price without VAT otherwise it's taxing tax.

It doesn't include discount - the article pasted above explains it. List price only. If you have a >£40k car and get a discount that takes it below that figure, it's still counted as above £40k for tax purposes. Makes sense I guess - would be too difficult to administrate everyone's individual case, though the options thing comes close to that.

What happens if you retrofit options and it then changes? I presume your tax wouldn't change then...

Picked it up this morning! It's very shiny (certainly in a much better state than I handed my old car back in!), and lots to get used to with the new MMI software and virtual cockpit... pictures to follow later :)

Congratulations. I'm collecting my new 184 tomorrow morning. I decided to avoid the panic of the 1st March! It will be basically the same as my existing 184 apart from the new MMI software. It also has Park Assist so that will be something new to try. On Sunday I will be taking it back to Germany for week's holiday.

What do you think of cosmos blue? I've also gone for that colour? Looks as if it changed depending on type of light outside?

It was really quiet in the dealership again for me. I think a few people are collecting later on.

I really like it! It's darker than the scuba blue I had on my old car. I've got some photos, once I edit them to blank out the numberplate I'll post them up :)

Those were this morning (around 10am), in the dusk it looks more green as well, a sort of dark blue/green colour, so it does seem to change nicely in different light.

Looks great. I shall be interested when I collect mine tomorrow how different Floret Silver on the new is to the Ice Silver on my existing one.

I just read this whole thread without noticing how old the original posts were. I was practically shouting at my screen when I saw people writing "If I order one now I'll miss the new VED!"

Life's tough when you're special like me!

Congratulations on your car @cemerson

First impressions of the car...
  • Got a nice Autoglym 'care package' with the car which is nice. Dealer said there was £160 worth of stuff in there, not had a proper look yet though!
  • Lots to get used to with the new MMI system and the VC, but getting there! Haven't really settled on what to keep shown in the displays most of the time yet.
  • S-tronic is taking some getting used to... it feels like a lot more civilised way to drive, but I'm still getting to grips with it a bit.
  • ACC working well, though I wish there was a way to make it react quicker to cars driving off in front of you, and have it 'keep up' a bit better rather than leave big gaps in traffic jams, because people tend to dive into those gaps if you leave them too much!
  • Washers now go on for a fixed length of time when you pull the stalk towards you briefly - in my old car I would use a brief pull to make the wipers go without the washers (to clear rain off the screen or something). Now I have to switch the wipers off, press down to get the single wipe, then put them back into auto
  • Not had a chance to try the matrix LEDs yet but looking forward to giving it a go!
  • Dynamic/sweeping indicators - had forgotten they were there really, but get reminded every now and then when I see the reflection in the car in front of me in a queue if I'm indicating!
  • Not sure I like the squished up reversing camera image - wish there was a way to make it full screen again with the sensors display overlaid like it was in the old car
  • Towbar system seems very good - I've only had it out once just to check but seems to work well! You pull the switch and moments later the towbar pops out, you just pull to click it in place. Exactly the same as this:

  • Read the manual last night - seems like they've solved some of the annoyances of the PFL car which is good. I can't actually remember any examples now but I remember thinking it!
  • MMI scroll wheel now goes the other way - arrrrgggh! I had gotten used to the PFL version... going to have to get used to it all over again!
  • New MMI system is great, seems like a nice upgrade.

Had a play with it this morning... still getting used to it all, but does seem to work well enough, other than the gap being too big I think. I've it working though (you have to change the lane assist setting to 'early' intervention for it to work which I didn't do until this morning).

So the lane assist activates and you get green lanes at low speeds? I so want to code into my car! Bit annoyed lane assist doesn't work under 65 kmph here! Do you also get a Traffic Jam Assist logo?
Tja

No, there's no logo like that. It's a combination of the lane assist and ACC symbols basically, where they are both green.

Collected my new A3 this morning and just spent a couple of hours get 'my bits' including my TomTom in to the new one and then been out for a drive for a couple of hours. All seems to work as I expected although the MMI is different but OK. The engine seems a little quieter than my previous one but they may be just because it's new. I tried the ACC on the way home from the dealers going through a section of 60mph with Average Speed Cameras and that again worked as I expected and showed the same green symbols in the rev counter as before. The dealer gave me a bottle of Champagne and a wire for the phone. The Champagne will get drunk but the phone lead won't be used as the old type mobile I carry in the car is not connected to the car and will only ever be used in an emergency. Photo to follow....

look forward to the pics Dave. Enjoy. :)

Yep, I got the phone cable too, but I'll use my own much shorter one rather than have loads of coiled up wire in there!

I think my engine is a lot quieter too, though as you say it could be because it's new. The doors locking/unlocking are quieter too.

Ha, OK, will get on that tomorrow then...

Drove it in the dark for the first time today, the colour goes very dark at night time. Very pleased with my choice :) Didn't get a chance to try the matrix LEDs today unfortunately, but did get a chance to give the traffic jam assist a proper go. I'm impressed - it's very good. I'm going to be changing the time before it warns you about steering with OBDEleven (it does give false readings sometimes even if you're holding on - I'm not intending to just let go of everything before anyone says anything...). The thing I said earlier about it being slow to follow cars when they move off - it's not so bad, it just waits until they have got a certain distance before really moving, but then does catch up quite quickly.

The only annoying thing really is that it only gives you 3 seconds for the car in front to move off before it disables the automatic go - same as the PFL model I understand. You can then pull the stalk for another 3 seconds, but I wish it were longer. It'll keep the engine on during those 3 seconds too, so the stop/start won't kick in until after the 3 seconds are up, and then the engine stops. When you pull briefly on the stalk to give it another 3 secs the engine starts again... then stops after, etc etc. What's also quite neat is that it seems to detect the car in front of the car in front of you pulling away, and restarts the engine for you - regardless of whether you are in the 3 second window or not. So if automatic-go is off (3 seconds elapsed), and the engine is off, when the traffic ahead of you starts moving, the engine restarts for you without you doing anything - even if the car immediately in front of you hasn't started moving yet Very neat!

The one thing I've not had a chance to try out yet is the matrix LEDs, but even with the dipped beam it's like strapping a miniature sun to the front of the car! I'm scared to use full beam in case I blind the guys on the ISS as it flies over... :p

Ahhhh so that's why the engine restarts before the car directly in front moves! Also if you manage to change the hands on wheel time would love to know what coding you used!

I've seen something for it somewhere I think. You can't disable it completely but you can change the time I believe.

The handling of the car is really great too. Compared to my old 150, which often didn't feel that nice in the corners, the quattro really lets you corner better (and the stiffer suspension that I have now over the old car). Everything is effortless too, it's pretty rapid and can get there without any fuss. The s-tronic certainly feels a lot more civilised, but then you can still whack it in sport mode and make the car feel lighter and sportier - despite being a 1.5 tonne car!

The gearbox catches me out occasionally, especially if I put my foot down slightly too much at slow speed and it gets into first gear and suddenly launches you forwards, but slowly getting used to it! I want to get used to driving it in auto before I start playing with manual mode.

For some reason the car feels bigger than my old one. Perhaps it's the way it drives that's doing it.

Oh - another change I spotted is the reversing camera. Even in the dark parking tonight it looked like daytime in the camera view so you can see everything so much better than with the PFL car. I still don't like the way it's squashed up to one side of the screen though... but I'll get used to it I'm sure!

Finally - I was charging my mobile phone today in the wireless charging cradle (part of the Phone box) - works well. A very neat feature I found though was that when I parked up, turned the engine off and opened the door (not sure which of these triggered it) I had a voice warning and message on the screen reminding me that I had left my phone in there. Brilliant! I was forever leaving my phone in that space in the old car and having to go back and get it!

Once you try the manual on the s-tronic I'm sure you will find it great fun. I know I do, especially with the handling provided by the quattro. I agree with you about the squashed image of the rear view camera. Much prefer the PFL version. I wonder if it can be changed using VCDS.

I'd be interested to see if it can. The parking sensors appearing on the right of the screen I've seen in other views too though - it's not just the reversing camera it can appear next to. I've noticed in this version that the parking sensors come on automatically if you drive up to something forwards slowly, not just in reverse - the PFL car never did this.

Seems like this is a bug in the MMI v2. I have had the new style camera on an MMI v1 unit and the image is not squashed. Have not been able to find anything related in the adaptation, coding or parameterisation of the MMIv2 so far.

Really? It seems intentional to make the sensor display clearer.

Perhaps Audi will issue a software upgrade if it is a bug.

It intentional. It's a ratio thing. To fill that space created by having the parking sensor on the side it needs to be squashed.

I'm not sure I agree it is a bug. It doesn't affect the operation or use of the camera in any way, it's just a personal preference thing.

What Audi have done is ported over the camera and display settings from the new A4 to the A3 without really testing. The MLBevo cars have a wider screen so the camera image is fine.
