Firstly, here are all the items listed below; that I used throughout fitting the door pocket lights.

  • T20 Torx
  • Flat head screw driver
  • Small file
  • Trim removal tool
  • Drill
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Wire cutters/strippers
  • Insulation tape
  • drill bit
  • masking tape
  • pen or pencil
  • The lights and cables themselves (link below)

1) First step, removing the door card.

  • remove speaker grill with flat screw driver or trim removal tool ( The speaker grill is really delicate and fragile, so do be careful).
IMG_5411_zpsqo6qqquy.jpg

  • next, remove the three T20 Torx screws.
IMG_5417_zpswrd87xvd.jpg

IMG_5416_zpstyz1cx19.jpg

  • Place the trim removal between the door card and the door and pop the door card off from the bottom and the sides, then lift the door card upwards.
IMG_5418_zpsnz8ardpa.jpg

  • Then remove this connector.
IMG_5422_zpscqr89qbg.jpg

  • Lastly, remove the door handle cable.
IMG_5424_zpshc6fvaot.jpg

2) Drilling your door card.
  • Firstly, sketch the circumference of the door pocket light on a piece of masking tape, then stick in place onto your door card. ( This will be used as a guide for when your drilling your door card).
IMG_5454_zpsjhqmdcfp.jpg

  • Once the masking tape is placed onto the door card, use a drill to drill out the inside area of the outline of your guide.
IMG_5435_zpsahwyg8oc.jpg

  • Test fit your light, to make sure it fits.
IMG_5442_zpsng8befve.jpg

  • Once you are happy its sitting wright; tidy up the edges with a small file.
3) Wiring your lights.
This is how I done mine;
  • I wired mine to the window switch, as i figured this would be the easiest way to do it. This is because, the door pocket light will come on automatically when you switch your headlights on.
  • Remove your window switch.
  • Use a set of cable stippers/pliers to strip back the wires.

  • Then solder your live (red) wire to the live wire on your window switch (blue). Then solder your negative to the negative (brown) wire on your window switch.
  • Then use some insulation tape to tape the wires up which you have just soldered together.
4) Final step, reverse the steps

You used to be able to get little connectors designed to tap into electrical leads on cars. Just place over the two leads and crimp with pliers. If you can still get those it would avoid the soldering.

Nice write up Lenny - good to try something that's not been done before. Rather than drawing round the lamp before making the hole you could pop out your puddle lamp (if you have interior light pack) and draw around the hole onto cardboard to make a template or just measure it - may make for a more snug fit of the new puddle light.

Scoth Locks ;o)

Thanks Lenny. Fantastic guide. I have made it a sticky thread and will move into the FAQs thread in a few weeks. :) x

Awesome little guide! Gonna gather up the bits and do this in a few weeks, along with the cup holder lights and footwell lights too

Nice write up! I also wired my lights with the window illumination. I still have to look for the door handle light pin so I can control it through the MMI.

Just installed some LED lighting in the car but used pin 3 (which is controlled via the interior lighting dial near the headlights). Trying to figure out where the ambient lighting pin is (thought it was pin 8, however when I hooked it all up and ran an output test via OBD11, lights turned on, but then I tried increasing/decreasing the lights via the MMI, nothing turned on. There are two MMI options, front and door, the front controls the footwell lighting, door I believe is the ambient.

I don't have the B&O lighting, but I think that and the door handles are all controlled via the lighting dial.

Anyone know how to find the right pin from the 32 pin door module connector so I can control via MMI?

Puddle lights?

Anyone know if the blanking plate where the puddle lights go just pops off? Or does it have to be cut out?

Cheers

That's how I have mine wired up as well. I'll see if I can find something in vcds for the B&O lights.

I think I found the pins, hopefully can try tomorrow. Pin 17 is ambient, 21 is ground. Hoping this works.

Believe for the rear doors its either pin 1 or 3. Only have the front hooked up so far.

Need to still hook up foot well lights too, but might skip as I really like this better, not trying to brighten up my feet lol

Hi,

Attempting this mod as well. Anyone have instructions on how to enable the interior lighting menu in the MMI? Mine only shows exterior as an option. Enabled bits 0-3 byte 1 in both driver and passenger door already.

So tried figuring out the ambient lighting to a big fail. Pin 17 actually isn't there (first one) and is from previous gen door modules (different plug shape).

The pins that are blank on door modules 5Q0959592E & 5Q0959593E (with power folding mirrors):
2, 6, 7, 9, 14, 15,
17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 26

Attached image as well.

Does anyone know where to get the door module wiring schematics?

Found the front door wiring, ambient is indeed pin 8. Think I have to do some additional VCD adaptation coding to get the non-factory lighting to work properly.

Just an FYI for anyone removing the door card, the screws are T25, not T20. This may be of use if you didn't have a T20 and went out specially to buy one for this job like I did. :p
