Hi guys.

iv got a drive belt squeel that comes and goes randomly on my 2.0tdi. up to now iv replaced the belt and the belt tensioner, but the problem is still there. the tensioner seems to be moving up and down quiet a bit still.

I'm guessing it's one of the pulleys. iv read the alternator pulley seems to be a common problem but when I first had the belt off, the alternator pulley seemed to move freely by hand (in both directions). is the alternator pulley supposed to be able to move in both directions?

it's the alternator pulley. I'm going to buy a replacement pulley and the special spline tool. iv had a search on here but can't find an answer... can I remove the pulley without taking the alternator out? any advice would be greatly appreciated. it's a a3 2.0tdi 8p.

can anyone point me in the direction of an alternator removal guide for an 2.0tdi 8p? just incase I need it. iv had a search but can't find anything for the 8p.

Ive changed my alternator pulley, its pretty easy to do but you have to buy an alternator pulley tool to be able to do it without taking your alternator out of your car and have to use an air wrench.

I watched this video -

I bought this pulley tool - Amazon product

If you want to see if your alternator pulley is broken you have to put a flat head screw driver inside your alternator and stop the thing from moving inside, the pulley should only be able to move one way, not stay stuck or move forward and backwards both ways.

If you need any help let me know and ill try and help out.

thanks for the reply lisaclio. I gave it a go on Saturday. I bought the tool but couldn't get the pulley off so I just took the alternator out and took it to my local garage. they charged me a fiver to take the pulley off and torque up the new one. The alternator came out pretty easy and didn't have to mess about with the bumper. The squeel has now gone and the tensioner doesn't move about now.
