Its turning intoo a track car ....

I haven't had Vag com on it yet (used to use works, don't have access now and cant find my lite lead since moving house)
I used a friends Delphi code reader laptop and it just said random multiple misfire.
Im aware that that's not as good as Vag com, its on my list of things to buy.

It smelt slightly, any ideas of what the orange crap is?

Im replaceing what I can see is broke by replacing the wiring harness for the coils, and a fresh set of coils to rule them out too.

Baby steps but im sick of ******* into the wind, fix what I knows wrong and go form there

Alright lads!
Still here!
This years been crazy with buying the house.
The cars not moved since Cadwell which was June or July.
The new coil pack harness is sitting on the passenger seat.

She lies dormant until next year I'm afraid. Hopefully the coil pack harness will sort my misfire issues!

She'll be out on track again next year all being well, She just needs some new tyres up front and some new pads.

So tyre wise I'm going to stick with my trusty NS2R. They're more than adequate for my driving skill and they're cheap as chips from Tyreleader.

With regards to pads, I've been using Ferodo DS3000.
Anyone used Carbon Lorraine brakes? My "Renault friends" swear by them and have ditched Ferodo.
My callipers are LEon Cuprs R Brembos.
Any input appreciated!

So
Coil pack wiring done!
Booked Croft on Friday 30th March :)
Hopefully my misfire on track woes are over.
The coil pack loom was cracked in approximately 1,258,963 places exposing bare wires, Im sure this could be the source of the misfires?

Good to hear your getting audi back in action, there hard work to keep going, especially if your spanking it around a track once a while!

Yeah my loom was the same! Bare wires everywhere, coil packs aswell seem to suffer from the heat, am on my third set. I had a set of bkr7e plugs in and didn't realise they were only good for 5k, car ended up misfiring like mad on track, plugs were ******!

Is croft a full day?

Aye, shes been in the garage locked away since July (I think) when I did Cadwell. Just bought the house last year so the S3 was parked up over winter to plough on with house stuff like carpets etc :(
However, shes sat in the garage and avoiding all the crap weather!

Yeah I couldn't believe the state of the wiring, there were cracks everywhere on every single wire! Surely that could be contributing to my misfires!
We spliced into the loom as far back as physically possible to ensure all the bad wiring was removed.
New OEM coils fitted at the same time from TPS.
The BKR7EIX plugs were new for Cadwell, and that's all they've done so tempted to leave them.
Or for what its worth just change them for new anyways ?

Yeah Croft is a full day open pit lane, I love it. Nice long track with loads of fun parts.
Whats not fun is misfiring all the way down the pit lane straight, so I hope the missfires sorted!

Its not compression, that's all ok as in the posts above.
Ive logged fueling and lambda, which is also fine (Bill checked my logs)
Its got to be ignition based!

So
Ive got the spark plug fear.
Been reading that theres loads of fake NGK spark plugs on ebay, which is where Ive always got mine from.
Im gonna get some form AKS tuning or Opie oils to guarantee that they are the real deal.

Imagine if all this was down to fake spark plugs!

Also, tempted to get a new maf. MY old one is 2 years old now, and speaking to @badger5 a dodgy MAF could possibly give me the miss under high load in high gears.

Anyone else had this before?

Yeah I have heard about the plugs thing too... seems a really bizarre thing to 'copy' but nothing surprises me anymore

I have seen plenty of cars where the MAF is shot after only months... I went through 3 in 18 months at one point... its a service item imo... get one... if it works then great, if it doesn't then spare... as it will go at some point..

<tuffty/>

generally under read... sometimes over read... you see it on the dyno as the reported airflow is way off what the power is... faulty MAF like this affects load calcs so ECU uses these to determine most of what it does (being load based)... can affect timing and AFR...

<tuffty/>

Last time I logged the car it was pulling timing and the maf reading was lower than it was just after Bill mapped the car.
It pulled 255 gs last log, and at bills was getting 275 gs and made 341.9 bhp.
Maybe its dying and under reading?

Would explain why when driving normal its fine, and only misses when under load?

I'm saying all this, I've replaced a cracked coil harness, replaced all 4 coils (Genuine TPS ones) and still not drove the car!
Its in for MOT a week Saturday so we shall see how it drives then before I go paying £100 or so for a new MAF ?

Pulling timing is a sign of an under reading MAF... timing advance is higher at lower loads so it will be adding say 25 degrees when it should be 20 degrees and subsequently it will be pulled as it hears knock

You know what, I'm gonna get a new one anyway ha ha

Thanks again for your input Tuffty
Will report back after MOT day and hopefully she's good!

Croft on good Friday is only a few weeks away :)

CL are reportedly epic. I'd think R 6 needed for yours. They're not cheap though.

If changing away from ferrodo you'l need new discs though. Never change pad make / compound on a used disc. It's asking for trouble.

Didn't @desertstorm find a decent source for ds1. 11 at a very reasonable price?

Well my disks currently feel warped after the last trackday but I think it’s probs due to the ds3000 leaving pad deposits on the disks.

List before Croft

Get the MOT done next sat
Fit new track pads
Pray missfires under load have gone
Purchase new MAF and take a punt on it being that if it’s still missing
If al else fails... torch car

Unfortunately the DS1.11 pads I bought were off a seller on Ebay who had 2 sets and just wanted to get rid of them I think. At £150 for the set that's a good reduction on the normal price though.

So

After following posts about fake NGK spark plugs and miss fires, I thought why not for the sake of £30 try a new set.
This time, instead of EBAY I bought them from Opie Oils.
So last night I whipped the old plugs out, and what I found made me furious / laugh / cry / jump for joy.

The plugs were so obiously fake it was unreal.

The top of the plug had no dimple like the new ones.
The three black rings around the top of the plugs was a totally different size etc
The engraved writing was terrible compared to the real ones.

For reference, fake on the left and real on the right.. the photo of all 4 are the fake ones removed.
Check your plugs people!

Ive been soo lucky, they've obviously been contributing to my on track mis fires under load!

That's new plugs, new coil packs, new coil pack harness all done. Roll on Croft on the 30th and see if the miss fire has gone!

Well, what a day Friday was! All is good in the hood!

To begin with I started chatting to an old ASN favourite, @16Klappe Jardo on facebook. Turns out he's moved to Newcastle and decidedf to come down with us to Croft with another lad called Neil who I believe owns Welly's old S3.

Woke up at 5.30 raring to go, opened the blinds to be greeted by sleet and snow :(
Got ready, jumped in the car and decided to take the kids trusty pop up tent to keep tools and clothes dry while we were out on track.
Tent

As we were driving down to croft, snow turned into rain and was just drizzle by the time we had signed on and done our sighting laps.

First lap out still lashing down, first corner navigated all ok. Second corner I went to accelerate out and the whole car swapped ends, did a full 360 and left me looking light a right tit ha ha. That'll be too much eagerness, cold tyres and the fact I've never done a wet trackday in my life!

Backwards
Wait on track
Wrong way

Carried out and gradually built the speed up getting more heat through the NS2R and gaining confidence !

Survived the first few laps and came in to knock the tyre pressures down and re torque the wheels to be greeted by Jardo standing at the tent.
Had a bit crack with him showing him the car (good and bad bits ha ha) and had a natter while I let the car chill for a bit.

Jardo and his mate went off to one of the corners to take some photos and I went out again, this time the track was drying and the racing line was clearing nicely. Chose map 3 to keep the temps down and went out again with Lauren.

The car was feeling great, I was getting used to the wet and the track was drying out really well.

S3 Clio

Unfortunatley, right in front of me, one of the lads lost in in this Clio and put it into a tyre wall :(

Clio

It was then lunch time and the track was really starting to dry out ! Said bye to Jardo as he was off and then had some dinner in the tent.

By the time the afternoon session was ready to go, the track was dry. I went to map 2 for more boosts and entered territorry where the dreaded missfire used to raise its head.

NO MORE!

MISSFIRE FIXED! Be it the fake plugs, the knackered coil pack wiring, the old coil packs? God knows but the little S3 performed flawlessly !

The car was unreal session after session, with me giving up and being tired before the car did anything wrong ha ha.

Missfire was fixed and I was REALLY pushing on perfecting my lines and trying different gears in different corners. I held my own with the Clio lot and I really impressed myself staying glued to my mates 240 bhp EP3 (well experienced track driver).

At 4.15 I came in for my last session as t started to tip it down again. I called it a day and wanted to end on a high and took the chance to go out in the other lads cars for some laps.

Packed up and drove home under its own steam and home safely in the garage to fight another day!

Ive been left smiling all weekend, the little car was amazing and all last years gremlins sorted.
I feel like the car doesnt roll much at all in the corners due to the eibach ARB's and my eibach shocks and Koni springs, but it sort of wallows in long bends.
I think the next move is going to be a decent set of coilovers and then all being well a cage welded in. I'm gonna fully strip the rear to save a few KG too.

New tyres required, the trusty NS2R have had it.

Next outing is looking like Cadwell Park or Knockhill in a few months time.

Only thing ive noticed on the way home is that on Map 1 is that it wont reach 1.65 bar and hold to redline, more like 1.4 and hold to redline.
I need to check for boost leaks, but its possible after all that heat that the actuator may have slackened and needs nipped up?

Ive read that the BBT actuators can go soft over time and req a few more turns of pre load. I'll give that a whirl.

Sorry for the million photos and blabbering on, but the little car did me proud.

On to the next one.... and ive got the modding bug back!

Lots been happening lately!
Last weekend with the help of Jardo I fixed a few issues with the car.

First up, boost problem.
I was only getting 1.4 bar on map 1 at Croft on good Friday, so knew there was something up.
After speaking to @Prawn and Jardo it was fairly apparent that there was going to be a leak and potentially the actuator must have softened.
I did a once over check, and straight away found that I had over tightened the hose from the charge pipe to the DV and there was a huge split in it!
Not to worry, forge one in the bin and out comes the standard one to the rescue !

Next up was to check the actuator.
It was also fairly apparent that the wastegate actuator had indeed gone soft and needed adjusting!
Actuator nipped up with a fresh measured 2 turns of pre load. Job done!

Rebuilt, then it was time for Jardo to polish up my headlights. While the bumper was off, I checked all the JCS high grips were still tight on the wellycooler set up, all was ok.

Jardo did the best he could with the lights, but pointed out my headlight adjuster clips were broken. Another job to do over the winter then!

The headlights came out amazing, cheers Jardo!

Managed to source two Federal RSR with 5mm dirt cheap (drove home from Croft on two sketchy front tyres ), got them fitted and it was roadtest time!

All is good, map 1 full boost restored and I don't know if its faster or not, but seems to spool soooo much quicker now that the actuators being held closed correctly.

I'm using it daily now during the summer. Its crazy fast (to me) and since the boost leak and actuator adjustment, I just cant get enough!
The odd time it overshoots the 1.65 bar 24 psi that Bill mapped map 1 to, sometimes she hits and holds 1.8 bar !
I'm sure the actuator will slacken though surely?

Filtered to the max photo of a job well done.

Thanks :D Love the little thing.

Honestly just book one and do it! Decent road tyres and a decent set of pads to get you going is more than enough. Just take your time and build up, by the end of the day you will be flying!
You learn sooo much about the car, and have to trust it that it will grip, and you will get round the corner. Biggest lesson I learned is NEVER break mid corner ad it upsets the car and will send you into a spin. Get all your breaking done in a straight line on track. Stick to that and you'll be just fine !

Love the car looks great. Do you ever get stopped with your number plate where it is?

Nah never, maybe because its never on the road and always broken ha ha

Its just a relflective stick on jobbie from Ebay.
Im not convinced it looks good but I need airflow to my oil cooler, more practical than for show looks really!
May stick my standard plate back over the oil cooler when on the road and just remove the plate on track ...

Headlights out last night, the leveling clips are broken and theyre proper hazey!

Jardo has collected them today and is going to do this to them :D
