Hello All,

Am new to the forum and just wanting some advice if possible.

Have a A3 8P 2004 TFSI. 120000 miles

When fitting a new timing chain last year noticed this(see pics) Basically dry cam lobe on cylinder1(I think?) Inlet Cam.

Is this common. What would be your thoughts. Would you replace the Inlet Cam only and try to clear out the oil passages or would you think there was more underlying issue?

Have read previously else where that the rev A cams are prone to wear, but it seems it is due to low or no oil flow.

Is there a better replacement kit or would you just fit an OEM Inlet Cam only and carriers...?

Any help would be appreciated

Kind Regards

Glen

If the oil wasn'tcirculating correctly , you would be hearing some nasty noises,

Also beware of the fuel pump/bucket wear, as this can also damage the inlet cam badly if bucket wears through & pump nipple is direct on the lobe.

True Soot1 thanks. I think it is more Starvation. There must be enough oil to stop noise, but not enough to evade wear. There is a lot of carbon build up also around the carriers?

NHN I have replaced the fuel pump cam follower and actually found the original in good condition. Replaced anyway.

Has anyone carried out a cam replacement? If so what would you recommend?

The earlier cam was a problem on the tfsi and wore the cam followers quite badly , causing some extensive damage to fuel system, cams and pistons, oil pick up pipe can be a big issue too and cause bottom end oil starvation and seizure
Maybe you could do an S3 cam upgrade?.

A few TFSI's have suffered from blocked oil strainers on the pick up pipe, maybe this is worth looking at.

Yes have checked this and cleaned. There is an updated replacement part for this that dog legs into a deeper part of the sump reducing the risk of sucking up sludge.

Mine was a bit blocked. Just cleaned it up. But i think the damage is done as i think some of the oil passages are blocked.

The S3 Inlet Cam upgrade does sound like a good option. I think also clearing the passages and checking all the Cam followers will be the way forward.

Thanks all
