First time I've signed up to one of these forum's but I'm at my wits end. I can't find even remotely anything along the lines of what i have and i have spent days looking.

I have suspected DSG gearbox fault and have been told your looking at about £3500 "and even then your car won't ever run the same again" by an Audi specialist garage.

Problem dates back to the start of last year, i bought myself a nice 2006 Audi a3 2.0 TDI DSG on a short finance contract. To make this as short as possible, the garage who sold me it screwed me over, the bloke who sold me the car was stealing the warranty money so when my cars front differential went wrong (can get more info on this later from the garage if it helps) i was waiting about 3 months (while still driving) to get it fixed. Car drove fine was just when i went up steep hills or for example motorway miles the car would judder left to right violently normally fixed by slowing down and speeding back up or just easing of the accelerator for a moment. It got so bad it was un drivable and i finally called it a day after 2-3 months. Again to keep it short even though the garage i got the car from well and truly messed me about and caused this, it spent 4 weeks in an auto centre with no avail. Then i took it too an Audi specialist and they immediately diagnosed it, got it fixed, happy days.

Drove fine for a bout 3 days then wouldn't start properly, easiest way to explain it was like the battery didn't have enough charge on a cold morning. About 10 seconds of the car choking itself it would start no problem. But drive down the road and you'd quickly realise there was no power (or very little) until you hit about 3000-3500 rpm, it was like severe turbo lag but when you hit the higher revs the power would bang in and shoot off (yet again driving a ridiculously unsafe car again) it would stay in the same gear but it felt like you'd hit the power button under the pedal and jumped down two gears. I drove it straight to the garage again and he spent about 15 mins tinkering, turning it on -off on - off, no codes shown on the diagnostics. He sat there and goes the only thing i can think it is is your dsg is gone, your looking at £3500 etc etc you know the rest. I didn't have another car so i drove it for a few more days when it eventually just cut out doing about 60mph, it put itself into neutral until i came to a stop and the dash went 6-5-4-3-2-1-N and that was it, had to get it towed she hasn't started since just constantly chokes when you turn the key.

So im 22 left with a derelict car i still owe a lot on, i paid for a nice car to not have this problem and got it anyway. Ive been thinking about selling it back to the finance company and cutting my losses there, but i never got a second opinion so i thought id try here. I got in touch with a company in bristol but again, by the time you tow it, get a few wires plugged in that alone is gona set me back nearly £300 before any works done.

My last move is here trying to get some advice from anyone who has had even remotely similar issues! Maybe this happened to you, possible costs? Any advice really would be appreciated. I can try and get another garage to give there advice but besides that its looking as if selling it for absolutely nothing and wasting £7K which is lovely (Y). The battery and tires are currently flat but I'm getting that sorted tonight, i can video how it behaves and get that to anyone if it helps or any other information Ill provide as much as possible.

Thanks for your time

If the dsg has a fault vcds will pick it up. Also why did you not ring your finance company when it went wrong they have big powers with faulty cars and garages

I did, i spent 3 months quibbling it and in the end they didn't want to know

Hi mate, sorry to hear your troubles, all is not lost, this place is a wealth of knowledge.
DSG problems could be your mechatronics unit and that wont cost you more than £1000 all in.
The cost of the unit refurb is £699, then you will need a good reputable audi specialist, NOT Audi themselves, but an independent specialist to drop the mech unit and do a DSG oil and filter change, when they get the mech unit back they will do a full road check and re sync DSG drive via a VCDS install.
Check these guys out and give them a call see what they say.

if you buy a car on finance you go direct to them and not the garage to get faults like that sorted

Get some more info on costs and tell the finance company the problem again and how much it may take to rectify, tell them to pay or you will go to the ombudsman for finance and report them, get it fixed and fight from there.
Also the only way to diagnose DSG faults is with a genuine VCDS, a backstreet garage with a standard vehicle diagnosis kit wont find the faults.

I think he has already paid them back, got there money and now dont want to know, maybe wrong though, hopefully hes not paid it all back, I wouldn't pay a penny more until its sorted myself.

Mate don't despair, I'm sure between a few of us on here we can give you some good advice.

Number one is to go down the complaints/sale of goods act/unfit for purpose/not as described route and the local citizens advice bureau will be able to help you lots here.

Secondly, the turbo lag sounds like the turbo has sticky vanes. At best Mr Muscle and a motorway drive will fix it and at worst it's a new or refurbished turbo.

The problem with your gearbox is a known mechatronics issue and it's been around that long there are lots of reputable specialists that can refurbish your mechatronics unit as others have said.

First things first, check the VCDS users map and get someone to scan the car and email you a log of all the faults. Then get them to clear the codes and drive the car again (if you can) and then rescan it to see what comes up. You can then systematically work through the faults to get things sorted.

But as I said, before all of that you need to complain about the condition of the car in the first place.

It would help if you tell us where you live, so someone can recommend an Audi specialist near to you.

Hi Everyone, Just like to say thank for the help and info. Definitely feel like Its not so much a lost cause as it was before.

The finance isn't paid off i stopped paying it back around July last year because of this issue. I have already spent 3 months going through there complaints procedure only to be told were not going to do anything.

I live in Taunton, Somerset, and the garage that originally fixed and gave me the diagnosis was AVS limited in wellington, they are an independent audi and vw garage. Since looking through paperwork is was the driveshaft that was fixed not differential.

Im going to ring the finance company now and kick off to high heaven, hopefully either get them to fix it or up the loan so i can get it fixed. As Audismart said I won't be paying a penny till its sorted.

If everything goes well i have had a quote from Bristol Transmissions for a VCDS at £55 plus an hour of labour at £77 to get a diagnosis, plus the tow up there will probably cost around £150 if I'm lucky. Not sure if anyone knows any other garage maybe a bit closer? Bristol is about 60 miles from me but the AVS matey said he was going to use them so i assumed they were the best around. But the plan is if i can get the finance company on board then get the car to bristol, and fixed through them unless anyone has better ideas. Ive heard this mechatronics unit could cost £1500?? Im hoping its that and not a full box change.

Il report back once I've rang them in a minute.

Cheers

Check on here for someone with a vcds thats local to you, will cost you some beer tokens, most people with one accept £20 as a token, and will most likely pop round to you for extra petrol money.

Best of luck with your problems and definitely get a vcds scan done to see what that uncovers.
As for not paying the finance while this is ongoing, that is the worst thing to do as it will put you in default and affect you're credit rating. Keep paying it and put any correspondence with them in writing. They should be sorting this out for you if they technically own the car!

As it turns out circumstances have changed into my favour, the original company i financed the car with has sold the account to another finance company, wiping any overdue outstanding balance. The original company i financed the car with haven't passed on any info with regards the car being derelict nor my ongoing complaints etc and the new company were pretty ****** off when i told them yesterday. Now they have put my account on hold while they get to the bottom of it, in the mean time il be going to the financial ombudsman but ultimately this has bought me a lot of time to get the car fixed in my own manor as no-one besides myself and you guys have actually been of any use.

Ive messaged a few people on that map Audismart, hopefully get a VCDS done to shed some light on everything then il go about trying to get the work done.

Just a quick note, the car has been sat not he driveway for about 8 months now, battery is completely flat, so are the tires. Im going to get a new battery etc and get her back up to scratch. But what i want to know is will this have any other negative impacts on the car. I.e old fuel in the lines etc?

Thanks again everyone who has helped

Really happy to hear you seem to be getting somewhere with this!

As said by others, don't pay those silly prices for the diagnosis, get someone from the VCDS map to sort it for you.

Stick the battery on charger and pump the tyres up. The handbrake may have seized if you used it other than that it'll be fine.

The battery won't charge so I'm assuming its to far gone?

@phil miller is in Cornwall, not sure exactly where though, or how far from you. He is an X Audi mechanic with his own garage, don't even know if he has vcds. Might be worth contacting to see if he can help.
