Hi, I have a 2013 2.0 TDI Sport Sportback I purchased as ex loan car from a Audi dealer back in August 2013. It had 5,000 on the clock and nice upgrades. I've loved it and still do.
The start stop works how people describe here fine and mostly works and at times the system decides for variety of reasons it will not kick in. I understand that.

What I wasn't expecting was that it would try and engage while I was travelling at approx 35-40mph. It has done this on Monday and today. I suddenly notice a loss of power and prod the accelerator but with no effect. I look down and the DIS is displaying the message along the lines of "Automatic restart not possible etc.. you must use the key to restart the engine.. ie not just dip the clutch." I have seen this message before, but only ever when stationary. Its fine when you are stationary as you can do as requested and use the key (no advanced key on mine) to restart the engine.
However twice in 3 days the start stop has decided as I change gear it is going to activate and stop the engine and request I manually restart the engine. I have managed to do this but is some what concerning as when you put your foot down you do expect power and not effectively a stall.
My car is 2 yr 11 month old and so booked in for 2nd service and MOT in 2 weeks ( also DIS says service in 1000 miles). I am rather concerned that the start stop engaged while the wheels were moving at considerable speed. I have notified my dealer that I wish them to investigate this when it is serviced and MOT'd.
Do any other VAG or Audi owners have experience of start stop killing the engine while in motion above a few mph?

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.
PS I plan on taking out extended warranty as hope to keep the car another 3 ish years and dont like unexpected bills.

I wouldn't wait 2 weeks for something that could potentially cause an accident. Get to the dealers immediately so they can scan it.

I would also play up your saftey concerns , that it nearly caused an accident. They have to take it very seriously in fear of being sued.

No question, this is a safety issue that needs immediate attention. If the car is stationary in traffic with stop/start activated, the engine immediately restarts as soon as you allow it to roll (on a slope for example). There is no way it should ever be stopping the engine at speed.

It sounds like the OP's scenario is a fault.

However - I recall someone (@h5djr or @Pulp84 ? ) mentioning that they had driven a VW Group product recently, where the S/S activated just before the car got to a complete stop?

I believe this is normal. It certainly is with my S-tronic S3. If braking, the engine will stop at about 5mph, just before the car comes to a standstill. Stopping the engine at 30mph is plain dangerous though, and needs seeing to ASAP.

Yes, my Golf GTE does this but I assumed it was to maximise fuel saving as it's a hybrid.

It only does it in certain situations usually start stop traffic.

Hmm.

I don't think I'm a fan of S/S activating before the car comes to a complete stop!

Wonder what MY the A3/S3 changed its S/S behaviour?

Does the start stop symbol show up?

That warning usually comes up when I stall (although sometimes the car will restart itself when I press clutch) or I think if I open the door when start/stopped.

It sounds more like a stall or engine cutting out issue than start stop.

If it was start stop it should come back to life by pressing clutch.

I'd get it in and checked asap. If your engine is cutting out at 30/40 will also lose steering/braking capabilities. What if it happens when going faster?

My start stop doesn't activate until standstill in neutral.
