I've had a quick look through the forum and can't find an answer, but I'm sure I've read it previously! So hopefully someone will be able to help.

I'm converting from using a I pod to Sd card in my s3 as I think it will get a lot more out of the B&O speakers. My files were in WAV, so I've converted them in to FLAC and have also attached all the metadata. However, can anyone suggest how I now create playlists? I'd like to be able to create a few. I'm also using a Mac...

Anyone help gratefully appreciated.

For my playlists, I just created new folders on my SD card, and then moved the tracks I wanted in each playlist to the appropriate folder....then, using the MMI, you can select whichever folder you want from the SD card directory, and play the tracks.

Absolutely. You can't create playlists as such. You have to put the actual files into folders. So if you want the same tune in two playlists you have to copy the file.

I exported my iTunes play lists and then edited the paths to the files in the play list using notepad. Then simply copied the contents of my iTunes folder to the root of the SD card (maintaining the file structure). Then put the modified play list files on the root of the SD card.

Worked a treat :)

Can write up some more detailed instructions if necessary.

Thanks for the replies, creating the folders is simple enough. Do I interpret it correctly when I assume that I have to have 2 copies of the same track if I want the track in a playlist?

Jonno225 -I'd also be interested in knowing how you did this, could you put some more detailed instructions up??

That's what I suggested, but jonno225 described a cool solution using aliases instead of making copies.
If you're short of space on the SD card, then the latter would be the one to go for.
If there's plenty of space it probably doesn't matter one way or the other.

OK so this is what I did to get all my music on the SD card with all my playlists.
My music on my PC is all stored in a folder called D:\Music\iTunes Media\Music.
I basically copy all the contents of this folder to the root of the SD card.
So the SD card basically then contains folders for each artist that then in turn contain folders for each album and so on.

Then in iTunes, I go to my playlists and export them out as .M3U files
File > Library > Export Playlist

If you then open the files in a text editor like Notepad, you will see that it is essentially just paths to each music file in the playlist.
You then need to edit the path to remove the start of it so that the files can be found on the SD card.
For instance:
D:\Music\iTunes Media\Music\Ed Sheeran\X\1-06 Photograph.m4a
This needs to be:
\Ed Sheeran\X\1-06 Photograph.m4a

To save having to do each line manually I do a search and replace ("D:\Music\iTunes Media\Music\" becomes just "\").
Then save the playlist files and copy them to the root of the SD card.

Works a treat :)

Hopefully you'll find it works OK for you too.

Cheers for that. I will give it a whirl!! Im sure I'll be able to work out how to do this on Mac.

Thanks for taking the time to write out the explanation, it must have taken a while.

I'm interested to hear how you get on with this as I'm also a Mac user. I've found that even if I go to the Finder, select the file I want e.g. "Yet more dodgy trance.m4a" and copy it onto a fresh FAT formatted SD card, my car will show me two files when I load it up. MMI shows me ".-Yet more dodgy trance.m4a" which is unplayable and the actual "Yet more dodgy trance.m4a".

Same happens when I do the above method of creating playlists. The method works well, but the file copy results in unplayable duplicates prefixed by ".-"

Yeah sorry guys, I cant say that I have ever tried doing this with a MAC.
Would be interested to hear how you get on

I do find this method of copying music onto the card the easiest way.
If you download or rip a new album, you simply copy the files over the top of the existing ones to add it to the card.
You have the ability to browse by folder if you just want to play a particular album in the car.
And you have access to all the playlists you've setup.

Macs have 'hidden' files that are used by the OS. You can view them on a Mac but by default they're not displayed, however when viewing the contents on a Windows based system (like the MMI) it sees them.

There are tools for removing them. I've yet to try but it'd on my todo list as it's a pain in the a***

I just stumbled over this thread and I know its very old but in case anyone else is looking I just use MediaMonkey and sync everything as normal. playlists go into a folder called 'playlists'. It doesn't duplicate any files. I can't tell you how it works, they just work!

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd provide an update. I tried this on my 21 A6 and it didn't work. Now possibly this is due to my using a flash drive instead of an SD card, but I found that it works perfectly if you change the backslash to a forward slash.
