What have you done to your Audi A4 B7 today?

Did a clean on the underside of the bonnet today, been meaning to for ages...just always forget!

Used Surfex HD and a detailing brush and wiped it all clean, the bonnet edges, and tops of the wings. Then used a gentle polish to mostly remove layers of water spots, wiped with isopropyl alcohol, then finished with Collinite 915. Looks so much better, although it's not that shiny as it's mainly just base coat under there. I left the bonnet lining in place as that was clean and it's clean underneath too.

I did find one area of funk, it's where the underside just rubs or catches slightly where the air intake grate is on top of the grill, nothing major.
I rubbed it down a bit and then treated it with BH Hydrate 80 and painted it with the matching LY7G paint I have from Fisher Motor Factors in Lincoln. Their touch up sticks are always a spot on match, been using them for several years now.

That must've changed then....usually over the last several years I've paid about £9 for the stick and annoyingly about the same for delivery....

But yes you're right Richard, I just put a Global touch up stick in the basket and yes £45 shipping...that must be a mistake / error on their website surely.
At that price they can keep it lol £63 delivered, that's insane.

Maybe keep an eye on it as they may realise the error....nobody will pay that.

I've always bought from Halfords, in a 3 pen kit: primer, paint and clear coat for much less. They don't seem to sell that anymore, but the individual pens are £4.99 each. You can enter your paint code for the exact colour too.:thumbs up:

i'd try it again it's fine when i try it on their website comes to 8 pounds ex. vat. for 1 touchup pen.

Just checked again, yes the pen is £8, but it's the shipping....still £45 to post a touch up pen, it has to be a mistake.
For one Global touch up pen plus shipping then add VAT, the total comes in at £63.60 delivered.

I've just emailed Matt there to ask if that's right / point it out to him if it's a mistake....

What a shame its an auto, a bit pricy too . :whistle2:

@Charlie Farley as i said before.. a unicorn and priced as such... just get a more common coloured one (black/silver/blue) save 10k on the asking price and spend another 5K on a complete body colour change... means they'll strip the car to the shell and respray it completely... than contact the DVLA for the colour change and you'll have a freshly painted Imola Yellow one at a decent price.

just pointing out that your vision can be had at a decent price ;) if you are willing to go the extra mile for it whilst keeping money in your pocket. Also that asking price get's you a very good condition b7 RS4 avant... just not in Imola Yellow.

I believe it's a Japanese import that's why. Stangely no MFSW/Concert but an easy remedy. I really like them and prefer them in some ways to an RS4, an S-line wolf in sheep's clothing, with only the 4 barrel exhaust to show. You might be pushing it to get a very good low mileage RS4 for that money too these days.

Creaking suspension fixed! It was an improperly torqued inner bush on the new NSF forward lower control arm. Rear tracking bolts, linked to by Rob, on their way, bought as a kit from LLparts: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203094586869. When they are fitted back it will go for full front/rear tracking.:thumbs up:

Agreed, always options. :icon thumright:

I'm currently checking out some special editions B7's that need some TLC and crying out for an upgrade.:icon thumright:

I also have a short list of mods ready for the Allroad.
brembo 18z's on the front, an RS6 honeycombe front grill, 19" alloys instead of the current 18" , a mild remap to 250bhp and maybe fit some of the factory options its missing, just few that is.
Always good to leave one's personal mark on a car:whistle2:

Never been entirely happy with the gearstick; the chrome is missing on edge; small thing but it just bugs me. Contemplated new from Audi Tradition (via oemVWshop) but £157 + VAT and + postage. So I bought what I thought was a very good condition 2nd hand one from eBay, until the seller contacted me, very honestly to say it had deteriorated since the photos were taken, and offered a refund. Then a new one popped up for a bit less than the Tradition one; a perforated one too- as standard on the S-Line SE. so I bought it together with a better condition surround. (Sorry out of focus photo, didn't have my glasses on)

Yes thanks, here's the link in case anyone else is after one, they've got a few left: https://tinyurl.com/2w4s48ux . I even bought a cheap replica before, thinking I could use the cap insert for the existing one, but even that was poor quality. I've always preferred the perforated ones and the MFSW is perforated anyway.

Matt from Fishers rang me today, yes it was a total error and he was very grateful that I'd emailed him to point out an issue he wasn't aware of.
They have updated the website and if you put something in the basket it will calculate shipping, now £7.50...much better!

He also said that he's going to email me a discount coupon code to add to the thread, I've not seen it yet however.

Yes all colours for all makes, they just need the paint code, you put the code into a box when you order it, then I usually put the name of the colour into a notes box too :icon thumright:

I've ordered 3 VAG colours and a Subaru colour from them over the years.
If I don't hear from them over the weekend I'll drop them a line on Monday ref the discount code. He was so grateful that I'd given them a plug on a forum and reported the shipping cost issue - good shout Richard, hopefully we will all benefit from it.

For tiny chips I use these, totally disposable / cheap. I got a pack of 50 of the white ones :

yeah I found that if you only use the provided brush in the pen you always add way to much paint ( ending up with more work than needed to sort that out)... best to use those super thin brushes.

Yep, and the brushes in the ebay link are perfect, I chose the small ones when placing the order, really good...and use once and chuck out at that price. Mine took a week or so to arrive from China. Sometimes I've used just a wooden cocktail stick, ideal for just a tiny dob of paint.

Wash and wax today. I figured with Autumn fast approaching and the weather being kind today, I'd apply with my Rupes / super soft pad a layer of Collinite 915 Marque D' Elegance....what a name lol
Saves so much time applying thinly with the machine, great overlapping full coverage and totally non-abrasive.

It's good stuff, high in carnauba, an old school hard / firm wax in a tin.
I leave it about 5 minutes to bond before gently buffing off, minimal to zero dust or residue.....it looks stunning.
Probably takes several hours to fully cure, and the shine is beautiful.

Wax is not dead :rockwoot:

Now you really will need to pop over and do the Allroad with that kit.
I'm collecting it tomorrow afternoon, so it'll be pouring down, that's a guarantee...

Lava grey looks really good after a darn good polishing. :whistle2: :yahoo:

Does anybody know where the startermotor relay is hiding? My car refuses to put any power to the startermotor and it's an auto so I can't jump start it.

No it's not the battery, not the startermotor, not the key not the immobiler or the engine. Scanned the ecu no faultcodes so it must be the relay that is causing it.

Thanks for your swift replies!

Just got this from Chat GPT if it's any help?

Audi b7 petrol auto starter motor relay location

ChatGPT said:

If you're trying to pinpoint the starter motor relay on an Audi A4 B7 petrol with automatic transmission (model years around 2004–2008), here's how it's laid out:

Starter Relay Location

For your B7 model, the starter relay is housed in a 9‑position relay panel, situated behind the dashboard on the driver's side, just above or near the steering column. You’ll need to remove the lower dash trim to access it Fuse Box InsightsFuse Box.
Within that panel, the starter relays are designated as:
  • Relay positions 3 and 4, both labeled "Starter Relay 2", and typically used on engines coded AUK, BKH, BNS Fuse Box InsightsFuse Box.
There's also mention in the electrical schematics of a starter relay J53 (for non-AUK/BKH/BNS engines) and J695 (Starter Relay No.2) as part of the on-board power supply control unit block behind the instrument panel AudiManual.ru+1.

Summary Table

ComponentLocationDetails
Relay panelBehind driver’s dash (behind lower trim)Access: remove trim
Starter Relay 2 (positions 3 & 4)In 9‑position relay blockFor engine codes AUK, BKH, BNS
Starter relays J53 & J695In onboard power supply control relay blockRefer to wiring diagrams

What You Should Do Next

  1. Remove the lower dash panel on the driver's side to expose the relay panels.
  2. Locate the 9‑position relay block.
  3. Identify relays in positions 3 and 4—these are your starter relays for relevant engine types.
  4. If your engine is not one of the AUK, BKH, or BNS codes, consult specific wiring diagrams for J53 or J695 as applicable.

Let me know your engine code or if you're seeing a relay block that doesn't match—happy to guide you further with visuals or specifics!

With no fault codes at all , if it were a relay youd get something ping up .
do you get all other curcuits powered up inc dash etc when on run position.

Possibly an interlock issue thats causing an open circuit.
Could be but turning the key doesn't do anything other than give power to ignition on, position 2 (to start) doesn't do anything it's like the battery is flat but that isn't the case.

I literally just tanked the car, turned it off, paid for the fuel drove to another shop dod my grocery shopping, and the car refuses to start, keyfob opens the doors, everything inside the car works, no blown fuses anywhere...

And I can't get to the startermotor without jacking the car up to test for power there...

But I literally think it's the relay as nothing weird happened between the tank station and the shop. (I actually had a good drive around town first picking up various items before I got to the petrol station...

Ps the car has an ALT engine 2.0l non turbo 20v fsi fwd with a multitronic (cvt) gearbox.

I pulled the ecu and there are 2 relays hidden under it.. I think the small one with the number 359 on it (5 poles in total) is iffy but it could be that that isn't the startermotor relay as I did get a replacement and it didn't make a difference.

So now I have to pull the lot under the steeringwheel and check... ugh with these electrical things I do hate cars...

As an auto, do you need to be in park to start ?
Yes but, park works just fine, problem literally goes to no response period. And if it was a sensor, the car would give a faultcode.

No faultcodes on any of the sensors... so it's electrical, most likely the starter relay.

Yes all works fine except for starting.

And as stated i drove about 100 meters from the fuelstation to the shop parked it up, went shopping, 10 minutes later no go. And yes the car has the right fuel.. lol

I was going to suggest getting a meter on the starter motor lead to check for supply there, but yes its akward to get at.
maybe check for correct and enough voltage across the relay terminal to illiminate that as the cause.

do you have a wiring schematic handy to narrow down points of failure?

I have access to it all just thought it would be far faster to ask... since I've been busy with it all day... had to tow the car home... than push it into a cramped parking spot, and i couldn't open the door far enough to pull the panel under the steeringwheel...

Will do it tomorrow now but will open elsawin and pull up the schematics for the car.

That said, if you are getting enough power to the starter, it could still be the solenoid that's the problem, I'd be working back from the power supply on the starter to be honest , but if thats difficult youll need to find a suitable workaround.

It just seems odd to stop so randomly with no previous indicators of a possible problem, but then that Audi all over.

@Matt275 engine code ALT 2.0l fsi 20v engine non turbo... fwd multitronic

I'll pull up my elsawin and go through the schematics and diagrams worstcase the startermotor itself is dead but I doubt it.

It must be the relay.

Just check your earth straps are all tight where applicable .

just to be clear everything is normal , but, the starter wont engage or make any sounds?
