What have you done to your Audi A4 B7 today?

Just ordering up the remaining service parts for the engine out.

new gaskets, brake vacuum pump, clutch slave cylinder, rear crankshaft seal and housing, release bearing,v-belt and tensioner.

not sure weather its more viable to order a new 034 gearbox mount as it is cheaper than the audi part and probably better.

I think that's about it unless anyone has a better insight to parts that i should replace whilst engine and gearbox are out.

@Charlie Farley whlst you have the box out put some fresh gearbox oil in it and don't forget about the rear diff and it's filter. Yes when i tune an engine the gearbox mount always is a more sturdy variant as the engine movement will be a bit more violent when you use the extra power. Refrain from changing the engne mounts as that just sends extra vibration to the chassis, the extra strong gearbo mount will give you some but a lot less compared to when all the engine mounts are also the upgraded versions. ( i know you've got the c6 snub mount already so unless it's perished don't bother putting in an upgraded one)

Other than that, i figure you've got the front crankshaft seal too? if not get it and job will be a good one ;)

Disconnected the negative terminal on the battery for about 15 mins the other night.
My reasons were due to recent MAF issues and occasional sluggish performance and not the best MPG I thought I'd try it.
I don't have access to the Snapon machine right now, but wasn't getting any EML.

Have to say once reconnected the negative, the car does seem better on MPG after a good few runs now. First drive was about 2k RPM on the motorway to do a regen if it wanted to.

Approx 5mpg more now in general.

I wonder if it was trying to regen before, but was confused in a 2 & 8 with itself. Time will tell, but I may have cleared something in the memory somewhere.

Reset time, date and reprogrammed the key, that was it. ESP light went out after 5 yards.

On reflection I'm going to replace the thermostat assembly too, after 15 years its going to be on its last legs and easy to replace with the engine out, the fitted one is working ok but it will probably fail the next day after the refit...best plan to do it now... :thumbs up:

Drove it to town and it's leaving behind a good old smoke trail... went to check...no coolant loss or anything nope it's just the engine not hot enough so it's dumping in more fuel to get it up to operating temperature faster, doesn't help that i got the heating set at tropical temperatures, anyway...i checked the oem map and apparently it's normal but because it's cold it actually looks worse than it is... note to self: make sure i hand the car in at operating temperature for it's upcoming MOT.

Luk DMF appeared this morning, a bit disappointed it didn't come with the new bolts, oh well another item to track down.

don't know where it came from but luk flywheels always come with new bolts... call the supplier and ask for them

Every single dmf I bought from either Luk or Sachs always came with the new bolts. It should as the bolts officially are one time use. (I've re-used them on occasion but they should be replaced)

I've had a quick look and there seems to be conflicting info from Luk if bolts are supplied or not, some DMF's don't come with them due to individual fitment options as the DMF can fit numerous models but use different bolts.

The Luk description doesn't make any reference to the bolts being included with this specific DMF, it does with some others though, I've emailed the seller for clarification before i buy a set.

Today I....thrashed the granny out of it in the lower gears. The BRD with it's stupid DPF likes it...I think.
It does go happily into the red and gently hits the rev limiter....have that for some heat and try and keep the need for regen at bay.
The turbo does seem to have plenty of puff for a diesel I will say.

Usually it's driven like a fairy with a hangover, so for the first time in over a year I've owned it I really went for it, mainly 2nd and 3rd.
I managed 33.4 mpg, proof of getting the injectors earning their keep for a change.

I will add it was all only in gear foot plants from about 2k rpm....upwards , so no nasty gear changes etc....no VAG DMF can take that!

Really got some warmth into the tyres too, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 really are a good tyre. Dry conditions tonight.

I polished the headlights, which wasn't really needed, but they just look better when given a good old polish every now and than.

It's the same with the TFSI's they need be driven properly and hard regularly , get them hot over the 3K mark a fair bit to burn off some of that carbon build up, none of this crawlng around all their lives, get in and drive them as they were meant to be driven.:thumbs up:

After a lot of searching for suitable size quad tips to fit on the new miltek I've played safe, well still going quads to fit in the S4 valnce but downsizing to 76mm outlets instead of 89's.

On the plus side they are a 60mm ID pipe on the inlet so it is easy to get a reducer onto a 50mm OD miltek outlet.
I'm going with the same guys I bought the 89's from in cyprus and they will supply stainless reducers too.

:tearsofjoy: Yeah they can take some welly; once in a while; but I find with my non-dpf 140 around 2-2.3K revs a good change point; maximum torque and a quick blip from the quite quick boost, keeps it unsluggish and clean; and maybe why she's still so smooth at 264K now. I don't think I've ever hit the red line on this old trooper - of course the MOT guys always do at least once a year though!

Had a proper polish done the other day; there's a lot of grease and grime that builds up, even if you get it valeted regularly like I do.:thumbs up:

Yes I agree on the grime buildup, mine got a ceramic coating 6 months ago, but today it just looks like it never happened. So will wash and detail it today if time permits. I do like to have a clean car at the end of the year and beginning of the new year.

Thanks mate! Me too but highly unlikely, she's having chemo therapy at the moment and that is what makes her so ill, apart from having all the symptoms that can come with it, her other problems are all triggered by it.. she feels like she's dying at the moment and had to get her to the hospital this morning early for an emergency assesment of what stuff she can get to help her breathe without it getting worse... and we still have another year of treatment to go... but if she stops the treatments... well i might as well get ready to be a widower rather sooner than later...

As i said 2024 can do one... worst year for us ever, but she'll beat the big C, I'm sure off it, just has to survive the treatment as this is the worst bit of the treatment for the next 3 months...after this it should be less of a headache.

Back on topic: the car got a quick detailer spray and rub down so it looks like my car again. although it would normally get a layer of wax and a polish but I have to keep my eye on the her inside so nothing to drastic can be done right now... mweh we still got tomorrow ;)

I've Just been checking my parts needed list ready for the imminent engine/gearbox out project.
I had a list of parts over and above some parts I purchased awhile back, 24 items needed, I've ordered 21 and waiting for most of them still, hopefully here ready for next weeks big push to get things sorted.
still need 12 new driveshaft flange bolts, revised oil suction pipe which I may just skip given the original one has been problem free for 15 years and 105k miles , just give it a good clean in my ultrasonic parts cleaner and refit.
There is no real problem with the original provided the guaze is kept clean and free from debris.

Also had a stroke of luck last night.
I was about to abort the refurb of my Clarke engine hoist, I found a solution to the caster wheels a few days ago but having looked at it in closer detail it was just going to be a money pit of parts, with that in mind i was going the hire one route as of 5.00pm last night.
Then just randomly having a quick browse on FB for one , not that i was expecting to be in luck, but one had just been listed within 30 mins and only a 35 min drive away ..
A nearly new clarke cfc1000 (1 ton hoist) ideal I thought and seller was only asking £50 , that was a no brainer and it was going to be mine.
Luckily I was first in line, collected this morning, and its mint, sometimes things just workout really well, not often but just occasionally.
happy days. :thumbs up:

Certainly was Matt. :thumbs up:

Also had a transmission scissor jack delivered this morning which will help get the whole lot out of the chassis a bit easier and safer than relying solely on the hoist.

They are both tools that will get used a fair bit on other stuff to be honest so not a wasted purchase.

I have just got back from having my passenger airbag explosive bit replaced under warranty. I recently received a letter saying it could potentially cause fatal injuries if it goes off as the metal casing is wrong. Nice to see they are still looking out for 2008 cars.

It's called a recall they aren't really looking after us they are covering their backs... if the thing either explodes without warning, or refuses to work when it should in a collision, the VAG group will be liable for all the damage, and this is a worldwide thing.

The dealers don't mind doing the recalls as the costs are fully paid for by the Vag concern. Aka the share holders pay the bill.

Back ontopic:

Just emergency repaired a crack in my rear exhaust box... noticed the car was extra smokey for no reason, started the car this morning and could see smoke coming from the front of the ns rear wheel... a quick look and found a crack. Just now did the emergency repair... should go and take it for a longer run to get the water out of the rear box... but I will do that when I got some time...

I'm getting prepped to make a start on the engine out on Saturday now, not mid-January as I had previously planned.
Our postman dropped off a big sack of parcels today, leaving only 3 outstanding, so I'm starting a few weeks early to get it done and out of the way.

I'll get the garage emptied enough to get my tools etc in and space to do the work on the engine stand next to the old bus, no point moving stuff all around the place, that's just making a bigger job of things.

A few more bits today so nearly all here now.
Gearbox oil just arrived.
Had a message from eBay first thing regarding me decat pipe query I raised yesterday.
It would appear the item had been at my local parcel force depot since the 27th December awaiting customs payment but they hadn’t bothered to notify me or eBay of that, great stuff, not.
Anyway been out and collected it this morning and they relieved me of £51 duties which I was expecting to be honest.
Looks well made and still worth the money.

6 litres of Fuchs pro S oil out for delivery this afternoon.

I thought things were going to smoothly, i'd overlooked getting new cyl head bolts and gasket, valve guide seals, camshaft seals and plug , injector seals , inlet manifold gasket.
best get on the case now, I think they are readily available, always something to get.

a shame that the link doesn't work... but just a headsup... unless you got a friendly MOT tester, the moment he spots the LED headlight bulbs (dipped or high beam) he'll fail the car immediatelly... so remember to change the bulbs every time back to normal halogen ones (or hid ones) when handing the car over for it's MOT. The rear numberplate ones are fine, since the complee housing is replaced and carries the right LED type approval embossed on the housing.

FYI the headlights do not have the LED type approval code embosed in the lens so by law it's a direct failure... it's a maybe if you replace the complete reflector/projector with a LED projector unit and wire it up correctly. But upgrade LEd bulbs are illegal in the UK.

My freindly MOT guy is very good but is very eagle eyed on headlamp and functions , I mentioned the same thing last time around and he said he will fail the car if they are non standard .
headlamps and their output etc are in the spotlight at the moment for being too bright so will be under increasing scrutiny.

It passed its mot on Thursday with halogen bulbs in ;) my tester is friendly but the same will fail for led headlights.
My headlight units have h7/D1S on them if that makes any difference?

Samething here... my MOT guy just told me he rather not loose his MOT certificate over someones headlights... not even if they paid him a days wage. that all said yeah i knew about it and i agree with the car light market loosing the plot a bit... those pescy SUV's with their laser-LED headlight projectors! it doesn't matter if they are behind you or coming on the opposite side of the road... they blind everyone and everything... not weird since their output can be anything up to 75000 lumens... look directly into them and you won't be able to see for a good old minute (and that is if you got 20-20 vision) This here is the main reason i have my rear windows tinted in Limo black not because it looks cool.
