I have been talking to @t8ups for a while and he wanted to get his hands on my headlights since i got them so i decided to pop over this morning and let him work his magic.

We swapped out the projector lens for a clear etched one and installed morimoto 6000k xenon bulbs and this is the result in light output

Before

before%20inside_zps15hc9ktd.jpg

After

after%20inside_zpszzoaihrb.jpg

The difference in light output between the lenses shows incredibly - the "before" bulbs were only a few months old but decided to swap them out.

The spread on the light is outstanding now compared to before and loads brighter than before.

These are the lenses we swapped them with.
After and before - completely clear compared to the OEM lens.

And as it sits now - dirty but still looking great ;)

During the process of doing this @t8ups decided for us to made a DIY guide on how to do this which either of us will be posting in his section by the end of the weekend (10/1/2016) http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/forums/em-tuning.209/

Looks mint. Have you got the s3 style headlights? Trying to source some but rare to find or too expensive.

Thanks, Yeah they're bi-xenon's mainly fitted on s3's, I tried to source some myself but @NHN supplied and fitted them for me, can't fault his work at all, shoot him a pm if your interested.

Cool will do. Just wondered what fog light bulbs are you using as well and how much was that upgrade to the clear projection? Easy to do?

I personally get all my bulbs (interior and exterior) from @t8ups and the fog lights are Ice White fog light bulbs, all of his products are great quality and his overall customer service is amazing.

I'm personally not going to comment on the prices of this as I know they fluctuate but if you drop t8ups a message he can give you a price on the kit alone for you to fit or have him fit it (Based in Northampton)
They are easy to do, we are currently writing a step by step DIY guide if you wish to do this yourself, which will be posted by Sunday in his section http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/forums/em-tuning.209/

Yeh I'm in bradford so similar miles as well travel wise, I guess first stage is to get the projection headlights and then take it from there

Thanks Chris for the Post, a great mod, well under rated. You think you have good xenons until you have them modded by me and then that's when you have good xenons

This mod can only be carried on on the 8P2 Bi xenons and not on the LED ones.

As said a guide will be up shortly and I would say its a 6 out of 10 mod to do with great results.

I spoke to t8ups about getting some uprated xenons bulbs for my Facelift S3.

I need to get round to buying them off him as the standards are so ***** IMO!!

He's not giving it enough credit, he knows it's a 8-9/10 just doesn't want to sound *****

6 out of 10 was the scale of the DIY, I'd give this mod a 11 out of 10 as for the money and some time from your day you can't go wrong.

Will reply to pm's tomo for the guys that have messaged, will put the guide up and will put the pricing for all morimoto parts and pricing in the guide for what parts are needed.

I see my 2009 Xenon equipped A3 might be needing a trip out of Yorkshire to brighten itself up! Excellent work. I'll allow you to post guides and answer the back log of messages before I get in touch!

It is an awesome update but I think it's only available to pre facelift a3s

My mistake - I though the reference to LEDs was referring to the lights themselves, like you see in the Mk3 Seat Leon - and I'm guessing the 8V A3. (though as I don't care for the 8V, its purely a guess.) Not the dame Edna LED bejazzle stuff that I keep turned off on my car. Maybe in time I'll be able to join the club as the T8ups lighting empire expands.

Just spoke to T8ups and he said an upgrade bulb such as the morimoto which he installed on mine makes a difference on the facelift if your interested.
I do have a picture between the 2 against the garage of which the lense is changed but original bulb and the bulb alone made a massive difference. if you want me to send it to you as an example of the change it made on mine let me know.

Cheers buddy; definitely interested as the pictures in the thread show the change in light make quite a difference. One of my xenon light bulbs/ is 7 years old now, the other only a few weeks due to a prang! - but I've always felt they should have been brighter. No need for photos right now; I'll keep an eye out for the guide and in a few weeks when life is richer and quieter, then I'll look into updating my old beast.

Pm'd you it as I had the photos up writing the guide.

I'm intrigued! I have S3 bi-xenons, and to me the output seems pretty ****** good, so if it can be improved, I'm more than up for it!

I thought the output was good too and as the process was going it didn't look much different as you cant really compare it visually without the pictures but looking at them now and driving in the dark you can really tell it's a lot brighter now.
They look amazing too, both an amazing visual and light up upgrade!

Hi Guys.

for the facelift headlights they can be improved but only by changing the bulb, the projector that is used in the facelift cars are very very good and just using an upgraded bulb which I can supply will improve things for you. For a clear lens upgrade for the facelift, its no as easy as the pre facelift, the lights take around 10 ours to split, then remove the sealant and replace with new stuff, then getting onto the projectors which is another 5 hours would as they have rivets holding them together which need to be drilled off, new glass added then spacers and bolts to get the cutoff sharp.

The guide will make it easier for more people with the 8P2 to carry out this mod as they where easier than I thought as I have done plenty of B7 xenons and they are fiddly.

Just changing the clear lens will get you a further 30% output providing the reflectors are in good nick but on a 10 year old car they will be as long as poop bulbs have not been used before hand as the non existent UV coating can burn the reflectiveness away fast, and Good bulbs will align in the projector perfectly.

Even easier to do my facelift car then.

I already have Bi xenons fitted so all I need is the upgrade lamps?
As a pre facelift better bulbs are helpful but to get the most out of it this clear lens mod is a must have.
As a facelift all they require is the bulb upgrade.

This kit can be purchased from @t8ups .

Required tools:
Long flathead screw driver, Torx screwdriver set, Long nose pliers, Cleaning cloths, Heat gun, Large cardboard box.

remove-clips_zpsfyxi9u32.png

Remove the 2 clips from the top of the headlight

remove-clips2_zpsb9wpkk8w.png

Then remove the 3 clips from the bottom of the headlight.

ballast_zpsdmmsxqhd.png

Unscrew the 3 screws and remove the ballast from the bottom of the headlight then prepare to remove the lens from the lamp.

My preferred method of heating the lamp up is to use a large cardboard box, cut a small hole in it allowing you to put the head of the heat gun in, Then place the headlight in the box and heat it up, So the box essentially becomes an oven.

Common sense is needed here as you don't want any metal touching the cardboard box and do not place the lamp directly in the way that the heat is blowing.

trim_zpswo8dbb3f.png

Remove the lens and unscrew the 3 screws and remove the trim.

trim-after_zpsbrttmxai.png

shroud-clips_zpsczxljt5g.png

Unclip the 2 clips at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock looking straight at the headlight and take the projector shroud off.

lense-holder_zpsfswoxrli.png

Unscrew the 4 screws and remove the lens holder from the headlight.

lense-out_zpsbwsfrhae.png

lense-clips_zpsgmmnsjv3.png

Bend all of the clips straight and remove the lens from it's holder.

new-lense-insertion_zpsxwoomp9s.png

Put the new lens back in making sure that it is aligned to the bottom and bend the clips back over the lens

bend-shutter_zpsklzuuihl.png

Using your long nose pliers bend the lens shutter to a 90 degree angle.

projector_zpspsqad4k5.png

Whilst it is all apart I always clean the projector, When cleaning you don't want to use any window cleaning or chemicals, Use some distilled water and a cotton cloth that is not rough or abrasive, do not scrub hard on the chrome pieces within the light as you can rub it away as it's just a coating.

This is my preferred method and I take no responsibility if you run away the chrome. Be extra careful when cleaning the reflector bowl.

shutter-screw_zps2wvijlep.png

Unscrew this screw from the rear of the headlight until the shutter sits flush.

reverse_zpsnih37gr6.png

Reverse the procedure and reassemble the headlight.

together_zpsqlkej7jg.png

Heat the headlight back up and push the lens back into place until fully secured.

Can't be legal surely having a clear lens over a HID bulb.

Anyway looks awesome, how much for the kit?

Most new cars run clear lenses, no reason why it's illegal.

It's £40 for a clear lens, £75 for etched and upgraded bulbs are £60.

It makes the cutoff a lot sharper - you don't remove the screw you back it off until the shutter sits flat against the projector from what I remember him explaining but
@t8ups could you explain in more depth for me?

So backing the screw off making the shield sit further to the bulb will sharpen the cutoff.

Bending the second shield out of place with give you the colour band to go with the new sharp cutoff, results of this will be when driving and people look in there mirror you see the blue/white (from the bulb) flickering which is cool and can also get peoples attention.

As Chris said, most new Headlights like the LED ones have the clear lens, its purely there to soften the cut off and hold back some light, doing the mod is getting the most out of the lighting system, you wont blind anyone after this mod is done as all the light still stays below the cutoff and on the road where it should be.
