by Stuart Milne A motorway pile up which involved 259 cars has left 60 people injured.
The series of accidents, on the A2 autobahn between Hanover and Peine in northern Germany, happened after several motorists lost control of their vehicles in heavy rain.
Police said ten people have life-threatening injuries and another 21 were seriously injured in yesterday's horror smash.
The pile-up has been blamed on a combination of heavy rain and excessive speed.
Firefighter Klaus Wulfes said: "I have not seen anything like this before. I have seen many accidents but never a pile-up this size".
Another driver interviewed by Reuters told how his car was hit from behind, pushing it into a ditch, allowing his family to escape safely. "All I did was turn around to check on my little son, our son. That was my only thought," he said.
