Why not Massa stays at Williams and Bottas to Mercedes; Valtteri to take Nico's seat is a no brainer - for me...

I like Massa, as a man and driver, but he has lost his edge, hasnt really been at the races for a season or maybe two,
Silverstone and his Team mate was the final sign of it imo,
Plus can we take all the tears when he retires again,
I agree Bottas would be a good fit at Merc, but as I said before, Williams know what a big season it could be, they have been in the F1 game for too long to make a rookie mistake and start with two new drivers in a season of new rules, they want the continuity of Bottas.

I would put Paul Di Resta in as an outsider. Williams reserve driver, races for Mercedes in DTM at the moment. I don't think he got a really good run at Force India when he was there. If Bottas does end up at Mercedes , Wehrlien will be at Williams and they will be getting a good discount on engines or a decent bung from Meredes as they won't have to pay Bottas as much as Rosberg.

I would be surprised if Massa decided not to retire, in the same way Button retired it is a very big decision for a driver and he would have thought long and hard about it. To come back to the same team he left would be a little daft. I think Wiliams are just hanging out for a better deal from Mercedes.
If Frank Williams has got anything to do with this then it's definitely about money and not the driver.
His take always seems to be that if we have the money and resources to build the fastest car it doesn't matter who we put in it they will win.

getting Paddy Lowe early is a key leverage point also, not having do the 6 month gardening leave would really help Williams as Paddy is fresh from the Merc design office. .

I've a £1 on it, Matt. OK, so I borrowed the £1 from RS3copilot but hey, what's a 'copilot' for?
I still don't see a 'negative' in the Bottas move, except for "him" that I've promised "not to name." And for Wehrlein to stay on for Mercedes development (for sure the 'snapchat-kid' won't do it) and 12-months on for Wehrlein to replace 'snapchat' and drive alongside Bottas is for me the way forward.
I think the "snapchat-kids" days are numbered anyway and it wouldn't surprise me to see him walk run away during 2017 were the challenge from Red Bull and Verstappen comes on strong
Like I say, 2016 is over and 2017 is already way more exciting.

I really can't see why Massa or Button would come out of retirement Mercedes would have to be paying Williams a shed load of money . Usually top people like Paddy Lowe have to go on gardening leave for a year before starting at another team. Maybe Mercedes are going to buy out Williams and run it like a junior team. The way that Red Bull has Torro Rosso.

If you're fond of old video games and would like a quick recap on what went down during the 2016 F1 season, you're really going to enjoy this.
The action starts off with a new team being "unlocked", which is of course Haas, followed by a quick rundown of the Australian Grand Prix where Fernando Alonso had his big crash.
Another important milestone was the Red Bull - Toro Rosso driver switch that saw Daniil Kvyat re-join his former team, while teenage sensation Max Verstappen went on to win in Spain before establishing himself as F1's biggest rising star.
There's also a funny segment mid-way called "Help Ricciardo Find His Tires", which is of course based on the incident in Monaco where Red Bull didn't have Daniel Ricciardo's tires ready, costing him what likely would have been a win.
In the end of course, we all know how it pans out, with Lewis Hamilton disobeying team instructions in order to give himself a chance at winning the title, only to see his teammate claim his first ever Formula 1 championship before choosing to retire rather than continue.

The deal for Bottas to leave Williams for Mercedes is also lined up and is set to be completed in the new year.
Although the deals are not yet finalised, they are as good as done and both will happen over the coming fortnight, BBC Sport has learned.
All the building blocks are now in place - Williams will let the Finnish driver go once a suitable deal with Mercedes for compensation is agreed and Massa has agreed to come back to F1 after announcing his retirement in September.
Now, only the finishing touches need to be put in place, which is expected to happen following the Christmas period.
They are the latest developments in a remarkable post-season period, which has seen a world champion retire, another driver reverse a decision to quit and the futures of several senior technical figures changed.
Mercedes executive director (technical) Paddy Lowe will join Williams to run their team following the departure of their chief technical officer Pat Symonds, which was announced on Tuesday.
Mercedes will replace Lowe with former Ferrari technical director James Allison.
The 48-year-old is on 'gardening leave' from the Italian team but will be free to join Mercedes in the late spring or early summer of 2017.
Williams and Mercedes were both unavailable for comment.
Williams approached Massa after it became clear Bottas was Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff's number one choice to replace Rosberg.
Wolff sees him as a close like-for-like replacement for the dependable Rosberg, alongside Mercedes' mercurial superstar Hamilton.
An initial offer of a reduction of 10m euros (£8.4m) in their Mercedes engine bill was rejected but Williams will release Bottas for a better offer, which is expected to be close to their full engine bill of 17m euros (£14.3m).
Once it had been decided the team could benefit overall from letting Bottas go, Williams needed an experienced driver to replace him.
Their title sponsor, drinks giant Martini, requires at least one driver over 25 for promotional reasons - and Williams' other car will be driven by the 18-year-old Canadian novice Lance Stroll, who is bringing sponsorship said to be in the region of £20m to the team.
Massa was open to reversing his decision because he only quit when it became clear there was no space for him at Williams or any other similarly competitive team.

It won`t have done his confidence any good, he has done more miles in the Merc car testing then Lewis,
Now maybe Merc have seen he isnt as fast in F1 as he is in tin tops during that time, this may explain why he hasnt been upgraded, plus it shows that the Mercedes young driver program isnt as good as the Redbull teams, as they have plethora of drivers available,
What about this story, Ron Dennis could be back in F1 before his current Mclaren contract has been shredded.
