Thinking of going back to a petrol A3. Is the added complexity of the COD worth it in terms of better mpg? I know it is 150 vs 125 but is real world performance much different?

From everything I've read, the real world mpg is the same on both models. I get anything from 32 to 47mpg depending on the usage.

Acceleration is noticeably more urgent in the COD - the power delivery is more like a diesel at low rpm. My comparison was the 140 v the 122. The 150 must be even quicker.

I've got the 122 1.4 engine and get fairly decent mpg figures. Best is 57 on a long motorway run, sticking to 70. Worst is around 41 in a fairly spirited drive. Regularly get around 500+ miles out of a tank, but my commute is mainly motorway.
Would have liked to get the 140 at the time, but this one was available so went for it. Still happy with it, and that's going from an 8P 3dr A3 black edition 2.0l diesel.

I have the cod, best real world average has been 65mpg on a run, normally I get an average of 40mpg around town...

I love the COD. Previous car was an 8P 125 which was a pretty lively engine but the COD is considerably more powerful. I particularly like the acceleration in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears. How they build such flexibility into a small engine amazes me.

Oh - and economy on fill-up to fill-up is 40-44 mpg, depending on the mix of driving for each tankfull.

Our 2015 150 COD is pretty good.. Economy is very driving dependent. Over about 70mph the COD doesn't kick in so watch it. 130kmph on French Autoroutes (80+ mpg) is noticeably less economical that 70mph on UK motorways and yes of course I stick to all speed limits!!!

Well first off you'll need to change your username...do you really want to go through that hassle? ;)

But definitely go for the COD - I have a COD 150 and it's impressive at low range. I test drove a 1.4 non-COD manual and the difference was noticeable.

Completely agree with the comment about it having "diesel-like" torque at low RPM. Accelerating from Start/Stop feels like launch control - power delivery is instant. But be wary of poor throttle response at low speeds (5 to 15mph), though this might be an S-Tronic "feature" - and not all owners experience this.

I get about 30mpg in town, though I'm not gentle on the go pedal. 45mpg on motorways if I'm doing 80mph, or 55mpg if I'm doing 70mph. You don't notice 2-cylinder mode at all, but if you're on a quiet smooth road you can hear the engine tone change - sounds like it's purring.

Overall great engine - smooth, quiet and performance is decent.

Can't comment on the 122 but I have the 150 COD and I am well pleased. So smooth and so quiet. I can't get less than 40mpg on any reasonable journey. Since new it's done 40.7mpg with best journey over 50mpg. It also impresses with its performance - not S3 but good nevertheless. I bought mine when CO2 was 109 so £20 a year road tax.

I test drove the 122 and found it 'acceptable' for someone who mainly owned performance cars.....but I ordered the then new COD engine which I recall being 138bhp at the time.Significantly different but if budget was an issue I'd still take the 122

I can only echo what others have said.....quite, smooth , swift...remarkably 'torquey'...my next car saloon will also be the cod....mpg not startling...in over 2 years it still returns 37mpg (mainly city driving with the odd glimpse of countryside)

In cod we trust

MPG isn't as great as Audi make it out to be, better than most but I'm not blown away. My average is 40 with mostly city driving as well.

The COD, in my opinion, is targeted at company car buyers. The CO2 is low and it cranks out 150hp. The new breed of company cars are the Golf GTE...quick, looks ok and has low CO2. Neither the COD or GTE have great MPG despite what the "official" figures say - it's just about reducing CO2 tax and increasing speed :)

This is true and mine is exactly that.......win/win...kinda on the pocket but without sacrificing any performance which in all honesty I expected the COD to be marginally better than the 122...(ordered mine before it was available in the SB and indeed before the price was released!...went over the allowance when it eventually came through but too late by then!)..and of course pleasantly surprised when I took delivery...have 2 months left before I need to order the saloon.

Is yours a company car as well?

One thing I was surprised by was the Mini Cooper S - for the same price as my A3, the Cooper has near 200hp and a ton of extras. But not sure if I'd want to drive a Mini...even an S one. The John Cooper Works model was also pretty cheap...

Indeed it is...allowance has increased this time around allowing me to go for the saloon 1.4 s line plus some extras (pan roof being one of them)..I do have the choice of the 2.0tdi but the COD is an easy choice - just being quiet is a huge plus.

I owned a brand new cooper s (remember buying it with a debit card - didn't even need authorising...like being at Morrisons!..sadly no cash back)...and it was great fun...but didn't keep it long...few reasons....cramped...didn't fit my suit image during the week...was always conscious of it being a little girly! moved into a TT 225 black with red leather(could also be considered to be girly! but I loved it) and the quality was far superior to that of the Mini.

For the money the Audi A3 COD is the best out there (IMO)

Completely agree - as an all-rounder an A3 S-Line COD is a great package. Decent power, looks good, cost effective and especially good on a company car scheme. The scheme mine is on works well - all maintenance and replacements (for anything) is covered, full comp for 4 people, breakdown cover etc.

The Cooper S offered the most power but - like you say I don't think it fits the suit image. Also looks cramped in photos and wasn't too sure about quality. On Mini's website they're showing off the rear seats but they really shouldn't be...the leg room looks atrocious. TT looks good in the right colour - black would be my choice as well. Though the new TT looks great in any colour.

Personally I'd go for the COD over the TDI. Power is the same but is quieter and more refined (in my opinion).

People getting much better mpg than me on cod.

My average over 11k is 30.1...

Most of the time I'm whizzing about town and back lanes.

On the motorway usually get low 40s struggle to stick to 70 in such a smooth car.

Best was 47 when I was stuck at 50 on a 14 mile journey.

Seems low to me. Over 10,000 miles I have averaged 40.7 and that's taken from a brim to brim calculation and not relying on the DIS., My best was 47.7 over a whole tankful and during that period I saw one journey with 52mpg. I agree that the engine is so smooth that's it's easy to press on.

My 140hp 1.4COD has averaged 43.68 mpg over 14241 miles since new, and this figure is calculated from brim to brim fillings, which I always do. I must add that I'm not a speed freak, but drive to the speed limits...or just over. :whistle2:

I'm using DIS so maybe I need to do a brim to brim and see what the result is.

Yes. The DIS is definatly a liar when it comes to file economy. My car is averaging about 40.5 mpg. Checked every tankful.
Mark

Maybe I should check the tank rather than DIS.

Town driving I get 25mpg on the DIS. Motorways I get 55mpg if I stick to the speed limits. That's at 5k miles.

On another note - I finally notice the 2-cyl mode. I thought it was my imagination but now I get all those comments about "vibrations" - it's purrs more than vibrates though.

I have found the dis not far off, how on earth are you getting only 25mpg you must be driving it flat out everywhere, hardly a true representive figure...

I keep up with the general traffic so I don't I'm think heavy footed - revs don't go beyond 3. But yesterday my DIS is 25mpg (short-term computer) and same again today (26mpg).

I think it's a realistic figure in heavy traffic on usually fast roads. Lots of stop/start, 0-30 then back to 0 and back to 20, back to 0, up to 30...all in the space of 5 or 10 mins. Accelerating mostly in 2nd/3rd will always give horrible MPG.

Of course I probably should have got the A3 eTron.

The only time I had figures like that was when I drove a 1.6 a3 diesel when it very cold. Over the same journey I'm averaging 39mpg at present with my current car..

Feel your pain, think this is why my average is so low.

Don't get 55 on the motorway either.

I Have the COD 1.4tfsi 2015 its currently done 2000 miles when I filled up it said my full range is 350???? I am getting no more than 28mpg around town and 45.7 on motorways. PS my car is a convertible

The COD economy varies significantly. Our last 3000 miles - 34.7mpg but mainly town or high speed motorway ( all legal of course ) it is possibly to achieve 45/50 mpg if you drive very carefully but hey that's no fun. For a 1.4 the 150 COD is very sprightly and encourages enthusiastic driving.

As fuel is going to drop below £1 a litre over christmas mpg is the last thing I'll be worrying about, there does seem though to be some variation in mpg from owner to owner but I'd just put that down to the driving conditions not the engine.

If I'm driving carefully to work I have got up to 58mpg before and If I'm running late it's about 45. No motorway driving either.
Range was 500 miles last tank fill up. Guess I'm taking it easy still as its 2 months old and I've not done many miles.

MPGs don't bother me - as you say fuel is cheap so I don't mind the figures being what they are.

I managed to get 35mpg on the same route - usual heavy traffic and lots of stop/start but I was forcing myself to be gentle on the throttle - often falling far behind the car in front when the lights go green (to the annoyance of people behind).

The other issue I get with my car - slow throttle response - exacerbates the problem. If let the S-Tronic and/or engine take it's sweet time to react to my foot being on the pedal...I get good mpg but I hold up other frustrated commuters behind me. Or I press a bit harder to make it behave like other cars and it decides to take a big gulp of petrol.

Just need to keep filling up more :)

Man I'd have to thrash the nuts out of my engine to get 25mpg in traffic so perhaps this is the real difference between a manual gearbox and s-tronic? I don't drive any slower than the cars in front of me either...

I have a 3 mile journey to office most days. I have to drive up a large hill in each direction and usually stop and start about 20 times. With speeds of up to 40. A lot of roundabouts so can't hang around.

I will try a sedate day and see.

I am surrounded by hills, the biggest being the ridge at a point a couple of miles outside of where I live. So I drive up and over that which ever direction I am going, then there is the drive up from the seafront over castle hill...

Ok so did same journey today taking real care with acceleration and managed. 35mpg vs usual 26ishmpg

Just finished a brim to brim, down to a quarter tank.

Did 324 miles with 46l = 32mpg

About 300 of that motorway.

Brim to brim was worse that what I felt the average of DIS advised on journeys taken.

Sounds about the same as what I get. I got 35 on the DIS on my usual work route, accelerating slowly etc. Missed a few green lights which I'd usually beat if I drove I like usually do.

Not done a brim to brim test (too scared of the results) but I imagine it'll be the same as yours judging by how quickly the fuel bars seem to disappear.

Maybe I'm trying to drive it like an S3 when I shouldn't be :D

I think it's the engine which people tend to get when they like driving fast but want reasonable economy to match.

So end up pushing it a bit more and end up in the same place as having a more powerful car you need to push less.

Let me drive your car and I'll see what I can do driving over the same journey you do keeping up with the traffic around. If I drive my car like you describe on A roads I can obtain 55-65mpg. I have often sat beside drivers whose driving is appalling when they swear that they are driving economically. I'm not suggesting you are a poor driver but its either the driving conditions or the car thats the overiding factor here.
