I have a sneaking suspicion that with Mag Ride, steering in Dynamic mode is very different to regular suspended.

Read a few posts about over heavy weighting, some on the RS3 side, but I really haven't experienced this. Actually far from it, with Dynamic being my favourite setting, town, twisties or m-way.

Now I did drive an SQ5, which in Dynamic, needed a gorilla grip to turn the wheel.

Thoughts and experiences please?

I do find the dynamic mode steering in the S3 is unnecessarily stiff

Anyone tried Dynamic with/with out Mag Ride?

a heavier steering without feel is useless

Yep tried Dynamic yesterday in an RS3 with mag ride, was lighter than my non mag ride S3 in Dynamic.

Dynamic is the best setting, tried comfort the other day and nearly hit a roundabout! Much too light for me.

As I thought - thank you.

I drove a 4-series recently (Sport, not M-Sport) and the steering was AWEFUL - Sportiest steering mode had stupidly high resistance to any input :(

Yep Dynamic here for me too - anything else doesn't feel connected to the wheels !

It doesn't feel connected to the wheels in either mode !!!! :p

......but if I remember correctly V8, didn't you say you preferred comfort for steering?

You remembered well! ;)

Cut n Paste:

It's "least worst" in Comfort. Auto adds the unpredictability of changing friction, Dynamic is all friction and additional weight, without any additional feel, and inhibits quick counter steering actions (if you need it to do that).

'least worst' lol

.............well I guess we couldn't expect too much V8 :)

This is evo's write up on the Dynamic setting for the dampers and steering:

"We tested the car it the south of France, where the super smooth road surfaces flattered the S3 saloon’s ride quality. Even so, switching the Drive Select system to its ‘Dynamic’ mode firmed up the adjustable dampers to an uncomfortable degree – and we know that the hatchback really struggles when asked to deal with UK roads. ‘Dynamic’ mode also adds extra weight to the steering, but does nothing to increase feel."

But hey. If you like driving the car with steering in dynamic, so be it! Personal preference n all that!

Interesting.

I guess that pretty much echos my 'individual' setup:

Steering and dampers comfort and the rest on dynamic.

V8, I hope you noticed Evo's plus points heading 'huge grip' ?!! ;) Now we're talking :)

I leave mine in Dynamic, steering in Auto

Leaving the steering in Dynamic is way to heavy, plus it feels like a flat tyre!

Interesting comment about the dynamic setting having owned an S3 8p SB for nearly 5 years without mag ride it was very uncomfortable driving around our potholed Tarmac. My current S3 SB has mag and is far more comfortable even in dynamic and in my opinion quite acceptable on our roads but who am I to comment :)

^ Mustn't say that out loud, you'll get into trouble :p

Heavy, light, comfort, dynamic all subjective again.............................the one I really don't get is Auto?

Why would you want a computer telling you what you prefer, don't you know already?

Well..

If the system worked properly (as it does in certain other makes) - and if it didn't produce the changing friction characteristic mid corner foible - Auto does work quite well. At low speeds, when parking and city driving, you get a lighter steering, but when you're hustling along, it stiffens up and provides less assistance so that a light twitch doesn't make you change lanes! Like I say, if it worked properly, it would be quite good.

Yeah I appreciate how it's supposed to work but if you specifically prefer one over the other you'll inevitably end up in the mode you don't like!

Personally, I don't like dynamic on any road surface or at any speed, as said above sometimes it feels like your dragging the bleedin car around on flats!!

Try some 19x8.5 wheels and you'll put it in comfort for the steering all day long. Dynamic feels like I've driven through treacle. Although comfort is like playing Sega rally championship, it's the best compromise for me.

Do you have Mag Ride - this is the question?

On my 19x8's:

- Comfort = over assisted
- Auto = inconsistent, which is just wrong for any steering
- Dynamic = what I would expect from an S3, having come from a diet of M, Pork, Elise, R32 ...... and not a hint of treacle :)

Well l did really like the steering on the RS3 it felt really heavy gave me a little more confidence whilst driving on,maybe it had to do with the 19 " alloys and 255 /35 front tyre's
Yeah this must be the case
Ps there's too many turns to lock the S3's steering=small turning circle 18"s,l had to do at least a 5 point turning manoeuvre to get the RS3 out of its parking lot in the forecourt, the S3 would have managed it in 3 manoeuvre's
Point being the small turning circle/steering doesn't give you the feel a hothatch should having owned a few

Good point well made about the different wheel and tyre setups and hence maybe different feel between Sportback and Saloon and then once again with the RS3 255frt/235rr tyre option (235s all round standard I believe?).

Not sure how mag ride comes into the mix though ?

I think the larger alloys/wider 235 tyres on the S3 sedan will give the cars steering a heavier feel,l don't think magride affects the steering at all

I have progressive steering as an option on my A3 (standard on S3's) and think the following:
For pootling round town comfort is 'easy' and is the mode I use.
For pushing on even though Dynamic only adds artifical weight, comfort is just too light to inspire confidence as to whats going on between the tyres and the road hence why I switch to dynamic.
For motorway driving, comfort is ok but prefer the extra weighting of dynamic.
