I want to buy some oil for topping up in my s3...asked the local dealer and they said they supply 0w30 audi long life oil...now is this right..as I'm sure I've read threads on this subject and people are using 5 w30 fully synthetic. .so which is right or are both suitable

Any brand of oil that meets VW 504 00 507 00
(look on the side/back of the bottle) will be suitable.

The following brands all meet VW 504 00
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

Factory fill is currently still 5W-30 for the UK market

You can choose 5W-30 or 0W-30 to top up, it doesn't matter.

You can even mix in non 504 00 spec oil as a top up as long as you don't put more than 0.5 litres in between oil changes.
(see your owners manual page 215 for the full details)

Eventually more manufacturers may move towards 0W-30 as factory fill, as this reduces start up friction in winter, and gives much better mpg figures for selling cars. A bit like the 'defeat device' on the diesels ;)

As for what the dealer is pushing - this is entirely down to marketing and pricing, best deals etc.

But for the UK, there's really no reason to use 0W-30, 5W-30 is better suited, especially as the engine/car gets older.

There is the stupid marketing wording .

"Approved" has had samples submitted to VW for approval .
Huge £ fees to do this , thus oil is then marketed at the upper end .

Cheapest is usually VW's own brand Quantum LongLife III £26 5L .

Others are Shell Helix Ultra Professional , Mobil 1 ESP Formula , Fuchs GT1 Pro C-3 XTL , Castrol Edge , Motul Specific , etc .

"Meets or exceeds" is not approved oil , it's recommended by the seller as meeting the requirements of , it's a financial profit desicion as profits aren't absorbed by the huge submission test fee .

Cheapest is Asda when on roll back
£19 5L .

Anyone can call a product suitable for certain specs , to assess quality and protect us is VLS
