Hi guys,

I've got an issue I've been noticing for a while since I've had the car. It's never been an issue with the cars performance but now I systematically have checked that I'm not just being paranoid, I thought I'd ask for some help trying to solve it.

In short: I start up my 2.0T (Engine Code: AXX) engine from cold and the RPM initially hovers at 1100-1200 RPM for up to a minute, with some juddering in the car (as if it is misfiring). The needle will sometimes fluctuate around as well. After about a minute left idle or just being driven (driving it during this period feels a little lumpier than usual), it will sort itself out and drop to the normal 800 RPM range for idle.

Interesting things to note:
- RPM jumps every time I turn on the air conditioning (I usually drive with the windows down so I don't use it very often). See video for a demonstration of this.
- Upon steady revving and holding at a particular RPM, when I release the pedal the needle jumps up about 200ish RPM before the engine calms down back to idle revs, which in this case is 1100-1200 RPM during this period.

Here is the video:

I apologise in advanced if there is something basic I am missing here as I'm still learning around this engine.

Any help would be appreciated guys!

I have a 09 A3 2.0TFSI (TSI engine) & have the same initial high initial idle. It lasts for 25-30 seconds maximum before dropping. Initially for 5 seconds the exhaust seems to have a higher noise/ it blows. I've had the car for 105k miles and it has always been like that and never caused an issue. I tend not to start to drive the car until the idle has dropped just through habit as I had the same with my MK1 seat leon which I had for 13 years. Never had an issue with either car.

That's a little bit of a relief that it's not going to blow my engine up in the long run. Is it just a trait of the engine? I'd still like to fix it if possible

Perfectly normal (on any car) for a higher idle when starting from cold. Although it shouldn't run rough during this period and if you're convinced it is doing then it's worth getting it checked for any fault codes.

The increase in RPM when selecting air con is also normal as it's putting a higher load on the engine.

I have this too on my 2.0T AXX. Another thing mine was doing was after a drive it would idle at 800rpm but hunt up to about 1200rpm then back down again. I've recently changed all ignition coils and PCV valve and that solved it.
