I've been umming and ahhing for ages about what car to move on from now my a3 is starting to get a bit dated, ideally been wanting something fast out of the box and a bit more modern so the S4 has pretty much been settled on. The only problem is that i know almost nothing about the 3.0T engine, i've read a few reviews that have sung its praises but generally the people that review these things only use the car for a week or so. Have any common faults been occuring on these engines and what kind of mileages are they good for before expensive things start breaking?

yeah you end up hitting the speed limit far too quickly and then have to back off just as the soundtrack starts to get really good.

Water pumps, thermostats, PCV valves.
The first two should have been sorted under warranty and have been revised on newer models. The PCV valves have been blamed in some U.S. cases for a thirst for oil. Most will go through some oil but nothing too severe.

Do they suffer from the head coking problems that the 2.0 TFSI engines suffer from? all in all after spending the evening doing a bit of research i've not found anything to put me off so far. (looking at lots of pictures of s4s are definitely helping)

The fact that it is forced induction means it is less likely to suffer from carbon build-up, but it is still an FSI engine so it won't be immune to it.
If there is a weak point its not so much the engine rather then transmission - if you get an s-tronic car. There is no doubt that some of the early cars had issues - mainly the mechatonic part.

2009 s4 avant s-tropic = Water pump and thermostat both done on mine at 80k ( thermostat faulty just changed pump as precaution)
Uses a little bit of oil but nothing serious, like opalfruit says they go too fast too quick ! Haha
Iv had various motors BMW, EVO, TYPE R and without a doubt my s4 avant is the best motor Iv had yet I'd recommend them to anyone
It's a school run weapon capable of taking the kids back and forward and no one even blinks and eye, but stick it in man in dynamic out on the road and 90% cars haven't got a chance ! Not a day goes by I don't disappoint some boy racer or a BMW owner, I love it
Use mine every day, various lengths of journeys, and it's getting a massive 20mpg hahaha and it's worth every penny !

I dont get much more than that in my 1.8T so wont be worrying too much! im sure i could squeeze 25 (my average at the moment) out of a s4 if i wanted to drive like a fanny, but thats boring.
