I did some research into the CREC engine fitted in my 2015 S5. I noticed there seem to be quite a few people on here who have recent S4s or have new ones on order, so they might be interested. http://audisrs.com/about59659.html

I've not read the info that the guy in the other forum posted, but I know that Audi have been waiting to throw port injection into their FSI engines for years, Toyota's patent expired in late 2014 I believe. And yes, it should have a huge impact on carbon build-up.
 
Isn't the CREC engine change when the S4/S5 became EU6 emission compliant too ?
First of them would have hit the UK roads Sept. 14 on 64 plates I believe.
 
If someone tells me where to look for the engine code I'll go and find it on my June 2014 and let you know.

I think the S4 engines went from CAKA to CGWC on MY14 where there was a drop in emissions and tax, then to CREC on MY15 where there was another further drop in emissions and tax....could be wrong, but there definitely seems to be 3 emission/tax bands on S4's from 2013 through 2015 models and there could be some slight overlap in engines/dates.

CREC engine code - build 08/14 - I found when looking for my previous Audi that some had stood around for a long time before registration, so checked carefully with this one as it had been preregistered by Audi and not used for a few months, but in fact it seems newer than some that are 2015 registered. Checking all the options codes mine seems to have options that are not shown in the book.
 
Based on a comment on AudiSRS the additional injectors should be there purely to meet EU6 emissions, but it would be great to have increased confidence that carbon build-up will be less of an issue.

What bothers me is the change to the supercharger. The proven formula of pulley + remap that has benefitted owners of these cars for years and has got a reputation for reliability might now be in jeopardy. If I get a stage 2 as I always planned, will I be going into the 'unknown' with this engine?
 
Mine was delivered in June last year and has the CREC engine - now I'm going to have to look it up and see what it means!!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I was just reading up on engine codes and thought it might be useful for future reference to this thread that they must have changed earlier than 2014 as my MY13 car registered in March 2012 is also a CGWC engine. I believe all facelift cars from 2012 onwards had lower emissions (179g/km?) and stop/start.
 
Just out of curiosity... is any of this applicable to USA S4?
 
I'd imagine so, dig out your service book and see what the sticker says.
 
The CREC engine comes with a new engine cover so is easily recognisable (although it's not much extra effort to find the 'CREC' on the engine data plate either).

They aren't acronyms, they're just Audi engine codes denoting slightly different engine specifications, you can find out what you have from the sticker inside the cover of your service book as per the picture Scott posted above.

From the above I am guessing they go someone like this...

CAKA - first spec from launch of B8 S4 in 2009 up to facelift in 2012. Emissions around 220-230g/km depending on gearbox and body style.
CGWC - fitted to the facelift cars in 2012. Only available with STronic box and stop start (in the UK at least). Emissions ~180g/km
CREC - fitted to 2015 model cars to meet EU6 emissions

All three are the same power according to Audi's figures but there's some evidence that CAKA and CGWC engines produce more than stated (350-360bhp seems to be the consensus) whereas newer CREC engines might be a little lower and closer to the actual 333bhp Audi claim

It's possible that non European supplied cars like yours have different codes to denote different local emissions regulations etc but yours looks identical to mine so given the year I'd guess it's CGWC

To be absolutely accurate it is not the engine code which is responsible for the lower peak power but the gearbox. The B8 had either a manual gearbox or an s-tronic that would rev to about 7K (someone might be able to confirm or correct this number), and as you have stated, typically the peak power was significantly higher that Audi had specified for the car. Then in the B8.5 there is/was only the s-tronic option, but it has a lower rev limit (about 6.25K). It is purely this rev limit which means that the B8.5 cars are much closer to the peak power of 333PS (328bhp) that Audi specified.

Based on tuning results (e.g. MRC who regularly publish results on their facebook page), it appears that once the rev limit is removed, B8 and B8.5 cars can reach the same potential at stage 1 and stage 2. However that can only be for CAKA and CGWC engines because AFAIK the tuners are still working on the CREC engine (which also has a new ECU - SIMOS 16).
 
That's slightly different to what I read elsewhere but you might be right, pretty sure mine upshifts significantly higher than 6250rpm though.
 
I saw on one tuner's website that it is 6800rpm for B8 and 6300rpm for B8.5.

I'll try it tomorrow but pretty sure it's closer to 6800 than 6300. Maybe they dropped it to 6300 with the CREC engine rather than all B8.5's?
 
Here's a graph from one of the recent B8.5s done by MRC. You can clearly see the revs suddenly fall at about 6250.

Mine's an early B8.5 (registered March 2012) and it did seem to change just before 6500 indicated from the one time I tried it today, although I wasnt in Dynamic mode so not sure if that has an effect? I did plug in VCDS when I got home to see if I could log revs accurately via engine measuring blocks and go for a drive but my version of VCDS isn't new enough so that option is greyed out due to the lack of a compatible .rod file :(

Looking at the graph in your link though the stock map power has peaked before 6k anyway and the earlier B8 graphs shows the same trait (Linky to example) if anything peaking even earlier at just over 5500rpm, so any gearbox induced rev limit doesn't seem to be the reason for a lower power output as they're all producing less power at 6k+. That tail off could be why Audi dropped the shift point either to protect the engine/box from needlessly high rpm with no benefit or even to actually help performance, although this one and this one seem to be revving as high as pre facelift cars so not sure whats going on there!

Yes you are right, I guess I just expressed my point badly. The point I was making is that the B8.5 produces closer to 333PS because Audi tuned it to do so, and not that the engine itself is any less capable than the B8 engine. So as well as the redline, Audi must have, as noted by @xpoweruk, changed the boost bleed threshold to lower in the rev range. My point is demonstrated by comparing a stage 2 B8 with gearbox remap to a stage 2 B8.5 with gearbox remap and the torque and power curves will be very similar (and I think the same is true for stage 1 with gearbox remap).

The only other point for discussion are the gear ratios themselves. I read (on a US forum I think) that the B8.5 gearbox has one or more ratios adjusted possibly to compensate for the above changes.

However all this does not give us any more information about the CREC engine and I'm impatient to learn about its tuning capability from the first tuning house to launch a package. I'll be happy if the figures are as good as we get with the other engines, but there's no harm in wishing that maybe the changes that Audi made have given it a bit more potential...

I'm currently looking for a S4 and noticed that the facelift cars up to 64 plates emissions are 190 co2 which has the car tax of £265 and 64 plate is 184 co2 and 15 plates are 178 co2 which both are £225.
 
Sorry yep 190g/km not 180, that's the CGWC engine AFAIK
 
Why are the new CGWC engined cars insurance group 27 with the others 36? Massive difference for the same car with the same power output etc.
