Set the scene... I have new car (new to me) and just bought a private plate to put on it. The car is mot'd but not insured or taxed.

i am not getting it on the road for another month or so but wish to have the private plate on there ready when i do.

now as far as i have read the car needs to be taxed mot and insured to add a plate? is there any way to get around this?

or call DVLA

I think you may be ok,

Both vehicles should be currently taxed. However, if the vehicle that currently has the registration number is not taxed, you can still apply as long as:

  • its vehicle tax has run out in the last 12 months
  • there’s no break between the date the vehicle tax runs out and the start of the SORN(Statutory Off Road Notification)

or call DVLA

which one :confused:o_O

the new plate is on a retension certificate and my new car does qualify for the above so might be worth a shot.

i think I'll give them a bell tomorrow, was seeing if anyone had come across it before.

The DVLA are a nightmare to deal with these days. So much better when you just popped into your local office

Phone them, or try the website.
I know that there are different criteria involved and the donor vehicle can even be written off.
You will get the best advice from the DVLA directly.
