Hi chaps.... I'm on the home straight of my cambelt change along with the oil cooler, the water pump, the radiator and everything that's ever been in contact with coolant. Only one hold-up....so far:

I was fitting the new cambelt tensioner: Haynes doesn't give any torque values for the tensioner mounting bolts so I guessed 25nm would be reasonable....and one of the bolts has sheared.

This actually happenned last time and so I used a pair of spare bolts I had in stock... My last two.

Can anybody tell me what the actual correct specifications are for these bolts so I can find a couple and put this damn car back together?!

Thanks!

Not to worry. Found something which will hopefully do the job.

I'd like to know the torque settings, though, if there's anybody out there...

For times like this when you dont know the torque setting, its useful to have an engineering table handy like this:

Googleing for "bolt torque settings" will provide many such tables.

IIRC the cam belt tensioner is held on with M6 bolts, probably 8.8 grade, so they should be torqued to about 6lbft according to that table.

Its not a perfect replacement for the manufacturers figures, but its a useful sanity check when the table says 6lbft you can be sure 25 is waay too much :p

Cheers man. My torque wrench is a bit boggo so calibrations less than 25nm (18lb ft) are somewhat hit and miss. I ended up going for a value which felt like "enough" just using a ratchet.

It's all going back together now, though because it's in my Nan's garage (ten miles away) I can't just nip out and do a bit here and a bit there as I would like to. Once it's all sorted, and my head gasket fears have been allayed (My God I Hope So)....

PROJECT AUDINARY can begin. Genuinely can't wait.

Love this car.

yeh wee bolts like that just need nipped up with a small ratchet. 6lbft is really nothing. You ideally want a small 1/4" drive torque wrench for values that small.

Thanks all. Incidentally I have no idea why I typed Camchain and not Cambelt. It's all these ****** Mercedes recalls I'm dealing with.
