Can someone please confirm exactly what the MMI cable does. I shall be picking up my new car soon and just want to be sure what to ask for.
We have both iOS devices (new and old iPads) and Samsung micro USB phone.
However, we don't generally store any music on these devices and the only interaction with the car that I forsee is using the phone via bluetooth and to charge all the devices. I already have charging cables for them of course. I intend to put a load of music on an SD card for the new car.
So do I actually need an MMI cable at all? (though I will still ask for as much as I can get!!)

Sounds like you won't really need the MMI cable apart from charging. There is 1 usb port to charge device A so you might want to charge device B with the MMI cable

Thanks Andy. I think that answered my particular question. I did wonder if the MMI cable did do charging. So I am understanding that there are two outlets in the armrest - USB and MMI (Audi proprietry)?
I will probably still try to get as many cables as possible - but don't want to actually pay for any I dont need.

If anyone wants to swap a iPhone MMI cable with a usb one (not micro usb, the socket usb type) let me know!

Whatever you ask your dealer for!
Thanks V8 :thumbs up:

So am I correct in thinking yellow collar Apple lightening (as I have an iPhone 5S) & a MMI full size USB from reading other posts?

Just to add to your confusion, I have a green collar lightning cable and I am sure I read somewhere that this is more reliable than yellow collar. Maybe veeeight has an opinion on this?

It used to be white, which was useless, this was superseded by Green.

But apparently now Green has been superseded by Yellow? I haven't see one yet, would appreciate a photo with the collar colour and part number visible :)

Certainly seems that yellow has replaced green, for example this site has the part numbers for yellow and green and suggest that the part ending AL replaced that ending AD. My understanding is that the AD was the green one.

The pack including the USB cable too is the same but ends AM.

Note this is research only, I haven't tried the cable myself yet, but will be asking for the yellow cable I think.

Thanks, good to know. I seem to recall that green had superseded yet another lightning cable, thought it was yellow. Anyway, my green one just fell apart so I will seek out the yellow and hope they have used better glue on it than the green.

I picked up my A3 Saloon a couple weeks ago and was given the yellow collared cable. Album art works fine for me although i haven't tried the video yet. Will try get a picture later on

******, so sorry. You are of course right. Too many sherberts this afternoon so please ignore all posts.

I have read through the threads on these wretched cables and have a couple of questions that I have not seen answers for:
  1. You can get AMI cables (usb and apple) from Amazon for under £10. Are they any good?
  2. If you get a AMI to USB cable (from Audi), then can you use that with a normal Apple to USB cable to achieve a working result?

Some photos of the yellow collared cable with part number. Sods law i was cleaning the inside of the car today, leant on it by mistake while it was connected to my iphone and the lightning connector has snapped off! Looks like ill be ordering a new one tomorrow!

Shame about the build quality issues. With the green cable I twisted my phone slightly and the whole black box fell in half. Looks like the yellow one is not much more robust.

Mine came with a green cable with lightening connector which I've not tried yet but I can confirm that for any ipod classic 160Gb owners out there you need the blue one. I tried the red and it just shown incompatible device in the media display.

Yeh, when I picked up my car, Sales guy asked me what phone I had and he went and got me one to fit from their on-line parts list
