steering wheel upgrade ?

Yeah, you may need the control unit (can't remember the exact name) that sits on the steering column. Plenty on eBay. Just make sure you get the right part as they all have slightly different functions depending on part number.

S4_dan is referring to the steering wheel control module that looks like this:

You can find the codes here: Cruise Control Retrofitting (8E) - Ross-Tech Wiki

Steering Column Control Module

There are 3 types of steering column control modules, only 2 of them support cruise control.
Lowline
Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke)
Supported Features: Trip Computer (does NOT support Cruise Control!)
Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-F 8E0-953-549-S
Midline
Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke), Sport Steering Wheel (3-Spoke), Multi-Function Steering Wheel
Supported Features: Trip Computer, Cruise Control
Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-L, 8E0-953-549-N
Highline
Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke), Sport Steering Wheel (3-Spoke), Multi-Function Steering Wheel
Supported Features: Trip Computer, Cruise Control, Steering Wheel Heating
Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-M, 8E0-953-549-P, 8E0-953-549-Q, 8E0-953-549-R

In short, you need one that doesn't end with "F" or "S".

Warning: it IS possible that you already have a control module that supports the steering wheel command buttons. Either use a VCDS cable to inspect the code on your car (go to the "Steering wheel" section), it'll be shown there, or look at the code on the module you have by disassembling stuff under the steering wheel. Here are 2 tutorials:

- Fitting cruise control - A4 - Audi Forums
- http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s...191791-cruise-control-installation-guide.html

Warning 2: you need a long *** T8 torx screwdriver and a huge *** T55 torx bit for this: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/3497/1001170v.jpg

Warning 3: you will need a VCDS lead to activate everything AND recode your ABS/ESP. A cheap ebay clone works, but the software needs to be fully activated, not just a trial version.

Thanks for that is that for fitting cruse controls or a guide on swapping them over? Swapped everything over today with squib but not the first picture aswell . Volume buttons don't work on steering wheel also have airbag light on and traction control or eps light on any ideas ?

Will need coding for the controls to work.
You'll need to clear the codes with VCDS. I changed my wheel the other day & even though I had disconnected the battery it still came up with ABS & traction control warning lights. Clear both codes & drive the car as the traction control light won't go out until you do.

Thanks for that everyone I have everything in and working apart from the functions on steering wheel but hey need coded. So will get it done soon thanks again

I may be wrong but the initial pic with the wheel is not a multifunction wheel.

looks like an early tiptronic wheel to me.

the multifunction on the B6 is a 4 spoke hideous thing.
and the B7 retrofit MFSW leaves you with an Airbag that might not work when you need it

yeh im with Rick, didnt notice before that is defo a trip steering wheel and yes the B6 1 is minging, go for a B7 1 if you going to do it

Which also raises the problem with the steering wheel control modules.. which would then need to be from a B7 if you were to use a B7 MSFW.

I asked once about fitting a B7 MFSW and was told I'd be stupid to fit one as the airbags might not work as they are twin stage and the B6 is only single. :whistle2:

You can wire a single stage and have it behave almost identically to the B6 one (so I've read), but that is another discussion.

Yeh the airbag discussion goes on and on dude, a lot of people have done it. But no-one has dared crash the car to see if it works lol

Sorry also ya ABS light may need resetting through live data logging etc. Or this just maybe the B7 one!

The only posts I've ever seen from someone who did the single to dual stage conversion and subsequently had a crash showed the passenger airbag had deployed but the drivers one hadn't. Not much to go on with just one example, but it does illustrate the extra risk.

So you have to ask yourself what's more important? - the cosmetics of the steering wheel or the work the cosmetic surgeon may have to do on me if my face hits the end of the steering column?

Professionally I spent some time crashing 200 cars into a 20 tonne block of concrete to develop the airbag system for a major car manufacturer, and having seen the mess it made of some of the crash dummies in only a 40mph crash I'm not planning on taking any risks with airbags not going off. Just my 2p...
