Boost Gauges

Ordered my boost gauge today, ashould be here in next day or so.
May need some little pointers in fitting the thing!!!!

Got my kit today but the fitting instructions are very very basic.

Where is the best place to connect the gauge hose? i.e., as close to turbo or anywhere on the tube? Which pipe when looking at the engine bay do i need to use??

is this what i should be looking for on my car? this pic is of a tt engine.

As far as i know its basically an vacume hose after the turbo, but knowing me i will more than likely be wrong.
 
mine is run off one fo the vacume pipes on the intlet manifold. Is this ok?
 
Yeah that looks like a fuel pressure regulator which can be used but i would not fancy putting it on that.

You can take a line off the inlet manifold.
 
That line to the FPR comes directly from the manifold (although the connection is out of site there)... check on your own car, you'll see the tube in question at the rear right of the engine (for 1.8T). Most people 'T' off that FPR vacuum pipe for that very reason, just like the guy who's TT engine is in that photo.

Connecting it at the manifold is the best place for the most accurate reading of boost, if you connect it at the turbo then the reading you get will be slightly higher due to pressure drop across the intercooler(s).

Also, how do i remove the centre vent?take all 3 out or just the centre one?? tried gently pulling but down want to break it!!
 
Have got the middle vent out and gauge fitted. god knows how to and where to feed the pipe through!!!!

Have given up at the moment. so got gauge fitted but no connections.

Do i have to remove the whole dash to feed it through???

I put a small hole in the vent housing in the middle where my gauge is seated, but how do i get the tube through the bulkhead??

Or, how do i get to the bulk head without removing the dash??

Yes that looks like your FPR and vacuum pipe attached to it... looks quite easy to get to but if not (the picture is quite close up) maybe you'd be better off finding a more accesible point in the bay... maybe try to find where it attaches to the manifold... I'm unfamiliar with the S4 engine bay layout so cannot suggest where to look unfortunately.

Look in the battery box... there will be a large grommet there somewhere used to run cabling etc. through the car... I think there is one behind the ECU IIRC /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/book.gif
 
I have found a gromit from engine bay through the bulk head, but i cant find where it comes into the car??

Got a feeling im gonna have to remove the dash if i want this connecting up. hoping it would come to this though.

day off 2day.....well im still on call so it will be just my luck that i have my dash in bits then my alerter will go off.......ggrrrrrr

yeah sorry about the large pic....nokia mobile phone! it is east access to the fpr and close to the bulk head too. but wil try and get as close as the manifold as poss.
 
you defo dont want to be pulling your dash out mate just drill a really small hole in the rubber plug in the ECU cover where the wires go then push it hard into the hole and you will have a good water tight seal
 
right,
got it fed through. i went through some large gromit on nearside, just under the pollen filter.

connected it between fpr and manifold.

started car and needle went from 0 to -20 psi.

thats not right is it? when lightly revving engine it moved closer to the '0'. not bin for a test drive, just putting my glove box back in.

That is exactly right... the inlet manifold is under vacuum when the car is idling, i.e. negative boost.

Take it for a spin and then see what it reads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, would much prefer a centre blank pod like in one of the pics, but mine will do in the vent form the time being.

took her for a drive, and as usual she flew.

on every gear change the gauge went to 10psi the dropped to 7 / 8psi.

what should the boost psi be on a standard S4??

Got a feeling my TBB or F hose maybe split due the to pressue drop from 10 to 7/8????

When you say it drops off, do you mean at higher engine speeds... 5-6000rpm? If so, that is how it should be. A remapped car will show circa 15psi+ depending on stage of tune... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Yeah, when the revs to about 5.5k the boost does drop, but initial gear change up then hard on gas, the gauge goes to 10psi then quickly drops to 7 or 8 psi.

Presuming this is due to the DV recircing and not dumping to the atmosphere??

No, the DV only recircs./dumps excess boost back to the intake... i.e. when you lift off the throttle and there is a build-up of pressure against it's spring.

Boosts drops off at higher revs because it is supposed to... that's the way these turbos are configured (wheel profiles, airflow capability etc.). A larger turbo would provide boost at it's optimum level higher in the car's rev-range but at the expense of a loss of response lower down the rev-range, i.e. turbo lag.

I'm hoping to get a centre vent pod like one shown in previous photos (madkebab's i think?!)

I know the colour doesnt match the dash, but now its all fitted I'll match it up later.
