TFSI 140 COD: vibrations in 2-cyl mode

My A3 Saloon has been delivered in Decembre 2015, not sure at all it got the last update... It's worth a check in my opinion.

Totally agree - worth getting upgraded anyway. You might get better performance...and if it makes it worse, take it back to Audi and reverse the update. Low risk.

I went to the garage there two weeks ago, and there were no updates since the last time (October). I'm pretty sure I have the TPI 2037323/3 (seen on paper).

J4MMYz: what is the brand of your fuel? And do you use SP95, 98, E10?

Higher octane makes little difference to a engine that cannot retime itself, such as the s3, to have any advantage. As for this statement, "P.S - to everyone saying they don't have this problem. You probably do, your just a lot less bothered/don't notice things like some people do or, your engine is doing this a lot less - I bet every engine does this - some worse than others." I can assure you 100% that my engine does not vibrate in two cyl mode thank you. Kinda contradictory to say that the engine vibrates even though you can't feel it, what????

High octane fuel won't stop vibrations or jerkiness. In fact it makes no difference at all unless, like cuke2u says, it's put in a car that can adjust to it. The 1.4 COD cannot re-adjust.

My engine doesn't jerk, ever - when it has it's because of S-Tronic. I'd say COD engines that jerk as violently as described have a fault that needs to be looked at.

Can anyone record a video maybe?

This is an really interesting debate but why do people, who have what must be a very annoying fault feel the need to convince those of us that don't, that we must also have it but not notice!

My A3 was MY16 delivered in July last year and I have done 4500 mixed miles and do not feel any jolts or vibrations when in 2 cylinder mode. All is good and for this reason it does appear to me that there were a small batch of engines or components that have some type of fault that really does need to be sorted by Audi.

Quite, and exactly what I have stated, but then, like those who have stronic, some get a little too passionate about their cars...

Even if you don't get jolts/vibrations it's worth upgrading your engine - you may even get better MPG out of it. I'm planning to ring my dealer up soon about this.

Interesting analysis as well - I think you meant turbocharger rather than supercharger? Though they are the pretty much the same thing except turbo's rely on exhaust gas to generate power.

I notice when 2cyl mode is in effect based on the sound - a bit like a washing machine when it's spinning. But it never kicks in when the engine is cold, or in 1st or 2nd gear.

It also always switches off when the speed drops below 20mph or if I force S-Tronic to downshift. If I'm cruising at 30mph it'll kick in - and I can hear it very clearly. When I accelerate from 30mph to 40mph there definitely is a slight lag in power initially but generally it seems normal.

COD on my car seems very picky. It has to be at least 3rd gear, at least 20mph, very light load, flat or downhill roads only, engine fully warmed up etc. Perhaps a COD engine behaves differently depending if it's connected to a DSG box or not.

I received my car towards the end of April 2015 so I'm assuming it has the 2nd from latest update - TPI 2037323/3 ?

Yeah, I meant the Supercharger because the supercharger works first then hands over to the turbo. The handoff is never noticeable though - and you won't notice the supercharger delay since yours is the DSG, they drive very different - which is why you never have 2 cyl in 1st or 2nd gear as DSG will never let you rev it (unless you are in manual shift mode) - if you let it rev you'll notice here and there the rumble/vibrations - it won't always do it though. Thats why I agree with it shouldn't be coming in on 1st or 2nd gear at all. Thats when it's most noticeable now (manuals)

I think your software would be the /2? This update came in May 2015. I collected my car on Dec 2014 - one day before 2015 (believe me I was cross they registered it and didn't wait a day) so we was on the same software I guess. The May 2015 one gave some improvement and upped the revs for it to kick in to 2 cyl - but this latest update (no idea when it was released though, probably a few months ago) is a massive improvement.

I agree, update your car even if you don't notice 2 cyl. I'm absolutely certain this is an update for the engine either way, so if your car went in for a service that should be something they install also. Should be anyway!

Also reading on, the engine did jerk/jolt yet. It's not any other fault since these updates have in the description 'to diminish 2 cyl jolts/vibrations' - which since this latest update, my car hasn't jerked/jolted once.

I always fill up at Shell religiously, I used V-Power a few times and found it to be worse. I did a 200 mile drive and found it jerked/vibrated like hell - soon as I filled up with regular again it was fine, however not great still since this was an older software version. Plus I wouldn't bother, no advantage apart from 'keeping the engine cleaner' which I don't know if it does really...

I'll get mine updated - the next service isn't for a while so might see if I can bring it in for a quick update.

I'm still shocked COD kicks in during gears 1 and 2 in a manual - I mean I know DSG has one extra gear so the ratios are different, but it seems totally illogical by Audi to make 2-cyl kick in during 1st or 2nd...typically the gears used for accelerating rather than cruising (which is when 2cyl should kick in).

I've revved up in 1st or 2nd - in fact yesterday when I was bored on my way home late at night - took it up to around 6,000rpm both in 1st and 2nd but can't say I felt it rumble. I suspect because COD wasn't in effect before I started accelerating.

Probably needs to be a specific combination of things for this fault to occur by the looks of it. Likely depends on the type of parts used, software version, manual/DSG etc.

That's strange and it may be just a stronic 'feature' as you alluded too because it is rare I actually see the 2-cyl mode indication come up on my car and usually it is under only light throttle openings and I am sure I've never seen it in 1st and 2nd gears because they are usually the type of throttle use that the COD would not be implemented under..

Yeah 2-Cyl is very picky on my car. The conditions need to be perfect - probably even the weather - before it decides to go into 2-cyl. And even then it's for about a minute before it decides enough is enough.

I genuinely believe COD engines were only there to navigate around the tougher EU CO2 emissions laws while still providing 150bhp. As a company car the COD sits into a really low tax band because the CO2 is (apparently) low. In testing conditions I imagine COD was probably kicking in all the time.

I totally agree that 2 cyl shouldn't engage in 1st or 2nd gear. When it does engage in 3rd it's not noticeable most of the time + i'm always revving low in 3rd when I stay in that gear, normally when I drop to 2nd (in traffic situations) and just let it sit around 2.5k revs thats when it rumbles (sometime) mainly when I'm SLIGHTLY accelerating, if you let off you won't notice it as much (might do it might not)

If you was revving 6k/5k then it won't engage, I think 2 cyl mode won't engage over 3.somethingk revs.
Try this: 2nd gear along a quiet road, rev about 2.5k. Keep doing it - don't do it once, not experience it and give up keep trying - I remember someone with an s-tronic did try this and noticed it slightly - as I say, it's not like it's shaking the car to hell, you just notice a slight rumble which sometimes is worse than others depending I guess on how much load there is - which Audi still need to tweak down a little, done a good job so far though. As I say, most of the time when 2 cyl rumbles is probably due to either timing or too much load.. but yeah, I agree 2 cyl should not come in 1st or 2nd gear at all... thats when it's most iffy, as you say it's an accelerating gear + if you are in traffic and it does come in to 2 cyl whats the point when a moment later it's back out again? All it does is mess around in those situations and won't save any fuel.

I'll give that a try tonight. So 2nd gear S-Tronic? 2.5k revs would be a low speed in 2nd gear...20mph??

So should I expect it to jerk like it's losing then gaining power? Or the whole car should shake/rumble?

In my experience, they'll never reverse an update. I had one of the very early DPF equpped 8Ps which had all manner of issues and they kept producing software updates. One made it far worse and I implored them to revert it back but they said they couldn't as the systems wouldn't allow it.

Things may have changed now of course.

It's more of a rumble. It shouldn't jerk anymore, I had a drive last night the first proper one since the update - the rumble/vibrations (whatever you want to call them) are still there, not as much however the jerk/jolt is massively improved. The odd time I detected it coming into 2 cyl, but it was acceptable, nothing that really bothered me. I still think it's got some way to go though, not particularly worried as they've done a good job so far. The worst used to be on the dual carriageway (or motorway) - if I was doing 70mph and needed a burst of acceleration (staying in 6th gear) - if the car was in 2cyl it would harshly jolt out of it when I slam my foot to the floor, however now it doesn't. There is still a detection of it coming out, but thats debatable, my friend makes a good point that it feels more like the instant response of the charger + turning the 2 cylinders on at the same time, it's more like a natural thing it would do in that situation and it doesn't bother me, not anymore anyway - it used to be nasty, sometimes it wouldn't want to come out and for a second would hold back then jolt and go for it. Not anymore at least, not to what I found. - I keep going back on this, but I just remembered, it used to mess about even when just accelerating normally at those speeds, now it's most of the time undetectable when it engages or disengages 2 cyl. Still though, not perfect. They should reduce the mount of load it takes for it to come out of 2 cyl rather than keeping it in which I think causes the vibrations.

Also, it was about a 30 mile drive. Mainly single carriageways at 60mph first. Then onto the A14 (dual carriageway) at 70mph. Then more single carriageway at 60 + some villages so 30mph/40 depending. I achieved 46.5 mpg in +0.5 degrees. Not bad - might of been nearly 50 in the summer on a warmer night, plus if I was more careful on the accelerator it might've helped, however I don't exactly rev it like hell to the speed limit anyway. Not bad!

@Ignition1 - can I ask how many miles your car has?

Just had my first oil change and inspection service, at 15500 miles, carried out by Portsmouth Audi, during which, they updated the COD software which, so far, seems to have eliminated the slight vibrations I felt at low speed & revs. Sorry, but I don't have any info regarding the software number.

For information, my car has S-Tronic, and was registered in April 2014.
