TFSI 140 COD: vibrations in 2-cyl mode

Don't worry. It seems not all units do it, or not all drivers notice it. And anyway the vibrations are small. Other than that it's a great engine!

Trevolly - don't worry. I have this engine and it is the smoothest engine I have ever driven, and that includes 4, 6 and 8 cylinders. I cannot detect this vibration on my car but of course accept that others do have it. You'll love this engine - not sure if you've gone S-Tronic or manual but the combination of this engine and the 7 speed gearbox is really great.

Has anyone noticed vibrations in second gear about 2.5k revs? I left it in second once before I went up a hill in a small village near us... And the engine vibrated really noticeably. I notice it here and there cruising along especially in 30 zones. Rather annoying but nothing mind changing.

Is there a fix for this or is it still not cared about?

I sometimes notice vibrations at that regime, but not so much as at lower revs. If your case is like mine, you'll notice more the vibrations when you are between 1500 and 2000 rpm, provided that the engine is in 2-cyl mode and you are stepping on the throttle (but not so much as to drive it away from the 2-cyl mode)

Yeah I feel that sometime, mainly on smooth surfaces though. Has there been an update for this? My car was last year December so it's not that old so unless something has come along since

I'm not too concerned though as it's not all the time. Would be nice to know when something comes up

If you read further above in this thread, you'll find user dkpeter reports he han an update installed, and the vibrations apparently diminished. But since your engine is so new, it probably incorporates that update already.

I guess we have to live with the fact that an engine on two cylinders tends to produce vibrations. Not terribly annoying, although I'd prefer not to have them!

Exactly, again it's not too horrible or noticeable. But my car has 1,250 miles now and seems to be getting a lot smoother so we shall see

I also wish though I could turn off the 2 cylinder mode. I can't see how it makes that much difference

Yes, it should be switchable (like start&stop for example). I'd rather have a little higher petrol consumption and avoid vibrations.

Lucky that your engine is getting smoother with miles. Mine seems to be steady in that regard.

Well not so much the engine but everything else is, the gearbox for example was very stiff and notchy but seems much better now.

Start stop is irritating. I always press the off button when I pull up outside someone's house

Mine never seems to go into 2 cyl, I have tried on auto, Eco and dynamic. Go to the journey average mpg or live mpg but it never comes up.

Drive carefully.

What am I doing wrong?

I've read models older than MY 2014 don't show the 2-cyl indication on the display. Could it be that? Which MY is your car?

Just picked it up last week on 15 plate so it's the newest version.

However if it was how come several of us aren't having the same. I cannot see how the technician is saying that when to have a vibration through the steering wheel that isn't really connected phyically to the engine as it is EPAS.
The Audi engine 1.4 TFSI COD 150 hp is identical to the engine in the VW Passat 1.4 TSI Highline 150 hp and this car loses one star in a test in the www.fdm.dk (like the German ADAC) Magazine 3/2005 page 78-79, because of vibrations in 2-cylinder mode in and I quote "Steering wheel, seat and pedals". It must be serious engine vibrations since the engine and the steering wheel is not connected physically as you say.
Perhaps Audi should change their motto to "Vibrationen Durch Technik".

Thanks! That's interesting information. I hope this definitely settles the question of whether the vibrations really exist or are "more perceived that factual"

dkpeter had a software update - first it seemed that it helped - but he returned later and told it was the same as before. Think dkpeter have sold his car - only because of these vibrations.
I have vibrations too (and I hate them very much) - and both the Danish dealer and importing company have had technicians test-driving my car and the all acknowledge that the vibrations are from ACT. In fact I have 6 different types of interference from ACT system (all acknowledged by importing company !) - the small jump from engine when activation/deactivating ACT is the most annoying one. Yesterday I counted 9 clearly identified "jumps" inside a drive of 9 kilometers - and that was a fully normal drive (rpm around 2.000 all the time - advice from VW to minimize the vibration). VW will do nothing and I have told them that the marketing material they use is illegal - you can not sell a product that "have undetectable switch between 4- and 2- cylinder mode" - and at the same time confirm both the vibrations and "jumps" as referring to the ACT system. Answer was they can't sell the product if they warn about the vibrations... well - then they keep important information from their customers... this is also illegal.

LarsR - FDM is right now running a case against dealer and import company - on my behalf. I'am not happy with the ACT system - and want them to code the engine - so I don't have these jumps and vibrations. And I want them to return the prices paid for the ACT system. System doesn't full fill the product expectations I had to ACT and it ruins the whole car experience. Dealer didn't warn me - and a testdrive I had in another car - showed that it can work fine (this car didn't have any jumps or vibrations).

Well, dkpeter said the update was helpful (or am I missing something?). His latest message (on this thread), from Nov 30 2014, says

"After doing almost 500km in the last two days I can say that the software update hasn't made my engine totally vibration free. I can still feed the CoD enabling/disabling but it is not annoying any more."

Sorry - think I have recalled a wrong reference... this was the guy I remembered http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/rumble-and-vibrations-golf7-tsi-140-dsg-t4733542.html?page=2 - he had update and thought it worked at first.. then he found later that it didn't and he sold his car. But I can see the dates doesn't match. The user I remembered was arvidka from Norway.

Can see dkpeter was online in here yesterday ... perhaps he would give us an update then... I've send him a pm.

Ah, yes, I remember that. In that thread they talked about an update (probably the same as dkpeter's) that seemed to work. So there is hope the vibrations can be diminished.

Good idea! Thanks for that.

I have the same/similar update (just the one from VW) - and it didn't work. So don't get your hopes up. Mine just raised the rpm where ACT activate up a little, about 200 rpm. But this only change that vibrations start at 1.600 to 2.000'is (normally ACT/COD start at 1.400).
But - I'd like to hear dkpeter's experience as well.

The vw passat will be using a different engine map to the Audi so it isn't totally conclusive plus the fact that every other road test has clearly stated that the engine is smooth and 2-cyl mode is indetectable. As other owners have also testified that their cars do not suffer from vibration at all one reported issue in a test does not qualify as a problem. As for it being illegal, you have too be joking, that one is from the planet gong. If you think you have an issue you need to be able to back it up with a legitimate independant engineers report that will stand up in a court of law...

Cuke2u -
test of the new VW Passat in a Danish newpaper - http://jyllands-posten.dk/livsstil/biler/test/ECE7418236/Basismotoren-rækker-i-ny-Passat/ - short in English "in city we never found the engine suitable - switching between 2- and 4- cylinder mode we never became a fan of - in combination with the small annoying and irritating vibrations in 2-cylinder mode".

And - im not joking. You can't market a product - and hold back important information. In court this will lead to a lost case. It's only a matter if it can be proofed that information have been hold back...this forum thread is prof of misleading customers.... Together with the already issued TPI from VW (VW service issue). My FDM layer (Danish car organization - like ADAC) is taking first step against dealer and import company at the moment.

I get a jump too. Very irritating, only sometimes but it feels like theres something wrong when it does it! I mainly get the jump at low speeds, if I'm putting the accelerator back on just to maintain my speed, and as I do it and 2 cylinder mode activates it does it. Only if I press the pedal though, I wish it just wouldn't go into 2 cylinder mode unless over 50mph, at 30mph its pointless, it activates/deactivates that much it's just silly.

I notice my engine vibrates when out of 2 cylinder mode as well sometimes - and I mean sometimes, it's very strange, It is there in 2 cylinder mode, but also out of it - I remember I left it in second gear once as I was about to climb a very sharp hill, with a roundabout at the end so I didn't bother changing to 3rd, and I was doing 2.5k revs and it did really vibrate, and it wasn't in 2 cylinder mode! I last night did the same thing but in 3rd and it was fine, but i've done it to try to make it do it again in 2nd and had nothing. Very weird... It mainly does it when cold though. Can garantee a short trip to the shops on the nice smooth surface (rare now lol) I can feel it vibrate. But I've got to say, when I say vibration it is a mild one. Not shaking the whole cabin like some people have reported. It is there though.. I don't know if V-Power is to blame so I'm filling up with normal 95 from now on. Got to say though, it is rather irritating for a otherwise very good engine + car!

In all honesty though, I'm very happy with the car and engine. It's very smooth apart from those odd times, hopefully in the end a software update will be a fix. Or there will be a recall or what ever, because Audi/VW/Skoda and now even SEAT have the 1.4 COD engine - so there will be a lot of talk about this!

As for the bloke that sold his car, thats fair enough but a bit over-kill - you don't know what VW will do, they might fix it. Clearly his vibrations sounded horrible though compared to mine, mine are barable but still annoying. I must have the recent software update as mine was built in Dec 2014. Would be nice to find out when another software update is out so I can take it in to see if that has any joy! I personally wouldn't sell it, it's not that bad. The car puts a smile on my face anyway, plus the amount you'd lose for trading it in just for that is unreal. Maybe the 1.8 TFSI should've been a consideration, but for a second faster, worse economy and higher tax I don't think it's worth that

Mine is December 2014 and it does have the 2 cyl display. You have to be on the trip computer with all the various info, on the MPG calculator. At the bottom of the MPG it will say when it is in 2 cylinder mode. If you are on anything else though, you won't know. Rather silly if you ask me, I drove an A1 with COD and it had it there all the time!

My Golf have the same option (under MGP) - but in all other areas of the computer - I have a small "e" with a double circle around it in the bottom right corner - to indicate ACT/COD mode.

Do you think that the vibrations could be connected to the "rattly turbo"? I'm having my changed in 2 days. Maybe that will help?

This thread is concerning me as I'm taking delivery of a new 150 COD next month and trading in my - silky smooth - 122 1.4.

I didn't notice any vibrations in the test drives, but now I'm worried I wasn't driving it in a manner to experience it.

Is it noticeable on both manual and s-tronic? Or more evident in one more than the other?

There is a difference though between something being illegal and something else not meeting a description. Different law different court,s as I stated, the engine map in a passat will be totally different to that of the a3. I rather think anyone taking audi to court for a un-noticable vibration might get a concession but they also might be laughed out of it as well unless you can back it up with a solid factual and independent engineers report against that of Audi that your car has a actual fault.

cuke2u - its VW and not Audi. And its the local dealer + the importing company. They are fully responsible for the marketing material they use. I have 2 previous situations where they have been ruled to pay compensations or change components for missing out in the written materials. So - im pretty confident that they will not laugh.

Yes I did realise that it was VW, if you've got compensation for a incorrectly marketed product then good for you, I think things must work differently in the UK. Go for it and let us know what happens....

Be aware - its not all engines that vibrate and "jump" - and its not every time 2-cylinder mode is active. Also sound like its more common for manual to have the vibrations - only a few people with automatic complain.
My test-drive before purchase was also perfect - but the the car I got defiantly have some issues... but its periodic (2 days now with only minor problems - but they will return when temperature raise). Large wheels seem to reduce the jump/vibrations.

Cuke2u - perhaps I should correct my self - I didn't get compensation, but im aware of other customers that was paid.

The 1.4 cod never had the turbo rattle...
Well mine did. And still has. The dealer accepted the issue and decided to replace the entire turbo.
I tried it myself. The actuator rod vibrates quite a lot.

Maybe yours was a one off, I am only repeating what has been stated in this forum. Aside from you I've not read about any others..

Thought I'd let you know, just filled up with regular unleaded at shell and my god does the engine jump and vibrate now. It was a lot smoother on V-Power. Not sure though if the ECU needs to adjust, I have seen that fired around on the forums. V-Power was so much smoother, I can notice when the car goes into 2 cylinder now it's quite unnerving. Such a shame for a nice car, but this 2 cylinder rubbish is just ...rubbish

It's worrying to think if this does it forever, how long is the engine going to last? I wish I had bought the 1.8 now and put up with a bit more expense

It seems as though this site is the only place to find complaint about this though, I googled 1.4 active cylinder technology vibrations and everything comes up as 'low vibration, engine of the year!'

Shame I didn't buy the A1 I test drove as I didn't notice a thing lol

My vibrations are not as big as to call them "rubbish", but I definitely would rather not have them! :)

>> everything comes up as 'low vibration, engine of the year!'

In retrospect, if they say "low vibration" that means there is some vibration. It's just that people don't seem to care much; or maybe vibration levels vary among different units

Lets hope Audi will get a fix for this in the end, or at least to numb them down to almost nothing, with this engine being so popular across the VW range I can't see how they can ignore it.

Going back one of previous answers, they will never get a two cylinder engine to run as completely smooth as a 4 cylinder as the more cylinders you have the smoother the engine will be. VAG, as far as my experience is concerned, have done a fantastic job in ironing out in any perceivable vibrations the 1.4 gives out in 2 cylinder mode, try driving a Ford Fiesta with a three cylinder ecoboost engine and you'll know what I mean.
