8V VCDS Mods

Ha! Yeah most of my important emails end up somewhere else or Gmail flag them as "social" and I don't look at them lol Hope you're well!
That makes sense now looking back at the manuals but for some reason I was reading UDS as something for VW light trucks lol
Yep my DIS already has the efficiency thing in there from stock - the whole "roll up your windows you're causing drag" or whatever messages and instant and current trip mpg etc (which by the way are pretty conservative numbers compared with what my real world numbers show). I think the efficiency mode in MMI for ADS does things like drop dsg into neutral when your foot's off the accelerator from what I've read. If you need any ad maps off me let me know and I'll send them to your junk folder ;) Actually, if you spot any places in the maps with ADS with a value of 47 I'll be a guinea pig and see what the same adaptation says on mine. If the same channel has a value of 15 on mine, then that might be where we choose which profiles we get. By the way, I heard back from Audi in Ingolstadt "Please be advised that all concerns related to products and services provided in the US market fall under the jurisdiction of
our USA affiliate, Audi of America Inc."... ***...

Normally I am pretty good with inbox / junk filtering but have been getting swamped with VCDS related stuffs and sodding "Indian" companies offering web design services for some domains I registered, so I made my rules more aggressive. VagCarCoding.com coming very soon BTW :)

All is well with me although ADS is doing my head in. I have a ton of information from all the kind people here, and others, but reversing engineering it "blind" is a bit of a nightmare hence why I have gone silent about it. Funny thing is I have a "Macro" file for the coding from VCP support, install the button on the dash, plug in and then hit Go and all the coding is fired in but.... the thing is encrypted! Am researching sniffing software at the moment in order to be able to find out what it does lol

The "drop in to neutral" thing, what I have been able to find so far anyway, is:
  • 19 - Can Gateway
  • Long Coding
  • Byte 12
  • Bit 2
  • Activate
Bit 2 = Drive Program Function "Free Wheel/Clutch" active. There is a lot more coding to ADS than just this tho and a good number of the "bits" are still unlabelled by RossTech :(

BTW, I grabbed a Auto Dimming mirror from eBay the other week. Will be installing using your guide in the new year, making the harness myself tho. After looking at all the wiring diagrams I can see why Audi do not supply this as an available part. I also have all the bits for installing front parking sensors (parking +) to try and sort out. Were given to me after I helped some guys retrofit (hardware and software) Xenon Lights. So lots more information to post up very soon :)

Nice! Looking forward to seeing how a site works out!

Yeah on the CAN gateway I hadn't actually looked at that before, but I decided to just spend an hour or so annoying the neighbours with my evil diesel fumes while grabbing all the ad maps I could get. That channel actually has a lot in it but unfortunately I didn't do an ad map of that one before I got the OEM Audi drive select activated :/ I'm going to spend some time tonight and look at all those ad maps and translate as well as I can and see what's what. One thing I found under module 44 steering assist byte 0 bit 7 is "driving profile selection active"... Not sure what that does on non ADS cars but it's checked on mine (and presume it wasn't before). 6C back-up cam byte 7 bit 3 I saw and it gives a new reverse camera view for "trailers" lol I don't see the point but it's there :)

When you get those front parking sensors installed, this here really helps:
Enable automatic activation of parking tones when approaching obstacle
Select STG 10 (parking aid)
STG access authorization - Select function 16
Enter access code 71679
STG coding -> Select function 07
Select Byte 3
Enable Bit 4

Let me know how the auto dimming mirror works out and if you need any help. My Dropbox still has all those 8V docs in it btw ;) shh... :) Oh any luck with the boot/tailgate button in the driver's door?

Oh I grabbed all them docs ages ago :) Had most of them from when I paid for 24 hours of erWin access but interesting to see the USA spec docs. In fact, if anyone reading this is interested in the Audi tech stuffs grab 24hrs of erWin access. Don't cost that much and Audi seems to have missed the fact that you can export all the information as PDF files lol

44 steering assist byte 0 bit 7 (driving profile selection active) was active on mine from the factory and I am guessing that this in conjunction with a few other codings allows the use of Profile selection (Comfort, Dynamic etc) through the MMI, which is actually a part of what I have not been able to crack yet. Still a work in progress as I know a good number of people are interested. I may not have been in contact with you guys but I have not forgotten :)

Grab 15.7.3 and generate them Admaps! Always good to have a full set of backups to work with. I even screen cap all the LC Bytes and Bits as I know Audi will wipe my car one day. Makes working offline easier also as the label files are encrypted and cannot be used with the LCoding tool.

Dimming mirror looks straight forward to be honest. Biggest issue will be running cables without destroying my headlining. I managed to grab the wiring diagrams for the internal tailgate release button and am just waiting for the part to pop up on eBay for a good price as Audi want silly money for it and it cannot be ordered here in the UK.

First off, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I've been able to make some very welcome adjustments to my car thanks to all of your efforts and sharing.

My question is this: On my A3 8v sedan (2015, Premium Plus US-model w/ B&O, MMI w/NAV & Connect), my trunk will not open from the rear outside button (the one where the backup camera would be if I had one) ONLY when the car is unlocked. It works as expected from the driver door release as well as the key remote, just not the location you would expect it to work from. No valet mode and can't readily identify a section 9 (central electronics) adaptation for it. When the car is locked and the Advanced Key is in range, it opens as expected with the rear trunk lid button. Is this normal behavior or have I missed something? Any guidance would be appreciated! I'm using VCDS v. 15.7 with a genuine cable.

I have the same car, except mine's a TDI with the low MMI. What you described in the last sentence there is right - car's locked, you have the key and it unlocks and when you shut the trunk it locks again. Are you saying if the car's unlocked and you go to the trunk and try to open it from the latch, it won't open? Doesn't sound like anything valet related. If you want to, pm me your ad map for 09 and I'll compare it to mine and see if there's a difference somewhere before the other alternative - a visit to the dealer.

Edit:

I got curious and went outside to check mine. Aside from the ice on the car, the trunk does open by the handle on the trunk lid if it's unlocked. Tried both with the advance key on me and also with the advance key in the car.

Looking at my ad map for 09, I found a few related to "boot", "trunk" or "rear lid" which in German I think is "Heckdeckel". Here's what mine are:

(9)-Access control-Oeffnung Heckdeckel bei Wiederentriegelung (aka (9) -Access Control-opening rear lid with re lock-out) is not active

(10)-Access control-Heckdeckel-Bedienstellen nachCrash temporaer sperren (aka (10) -Access Control trunk lid wallstations nachCrash lock temporarly) is active

(12)-Access control-Direkter Auswurf des Heckdeckels (aka (12) -Access Control Direct ejection of the rear cover) is active

(13)-Access control-ZV entriegelt auch Heckdeckel (aka (13) -Access Control ZV also unlocks the boot lid) is active

Also, (11)-Access control-Valet Parking is not active

Not sure if this next one applies to us as "convert top oper" I always thought was for convertibles, but some of mine are listed as active. This one here is not active, but it mentions the trunk:

(12)-Convert. top oper.-Heckdeckel sperren bei Verdeckbetrieb (aka (12) -Convert. top oper.-boot lid lock when the top operation) is not active

I have no idea though what these access control items are, and I used Google translate to translate the text in my ad map. As far as I can tell, they're the only things related to boot or trunk listed in my 09 ad map, but they may or may not be something that should be active on yours. Take a look though and if you have them the same as mine, and valet is not active then you might want to try your spare key and then if that doesn't work give the dealer a call. Let us know how you get on though.

BTW I often find my driver's door sometimes doesn't lock or unlock with advance key. Fix is just to swear at it or kick a tire. Usually happens when there's ladies about or I'm parking up next to a BMW or Merc lol

Thanks for the info, kc1174, I'll send you my complete map shortly.

The related bits are this, to compare to yours.

(11)-Access control-Valet Parking not active

Yeah yours is the same as mine by the looks of it... Sorry. Yep, shoot over the ad map and I'll take a look and see how it compares. I can't recall anything in long coding under 09 related to the trunk either but I'll take a look at that in the morning when the ice has melted so I'm not annoying my asthmatic neighbors who already hate my diesel :) It could also be something in another location. Have you made any other changes with VCDS outside of anything in Alex's PDF and also was the trunk lid working before do you recall?

I did a couple in long coding to get the oil temp readout and the needle sweep but I think that was it. To be honest, I don't recall whether or not it worked correctly before and I only had the car a couple of days before I got my coding done. Of course I neglected to do an initial map because I felt pretty comfortable with what I was doing due to lots of research ahead of time. Feeling rather foolish about that in hindsight...

Thanks a lot for checking into it!

No problem :) Yeah I just printed out Alex's PDF at first and wrote on the printout what worked and what didn't - then I learned how to save logs in VCDS lol I just sent you back a PM with the compare. There's a few differences I spotted related to comfort opening, but if you didn't change those then they may have been there for a reason. We both have the 2015 premium plus model with B&O but there may be packages you have that I don't and vice versa kinda thing. I'm thinking it could be the comfort opening setting or maybe just a trunk module gone crazy. Let us know how it goes!

Just spent about an hour with the car and tried lots of variants of the adaptations I had earlier coded and un-coded and re-coded. Somehow in the process the rear trunk lid button began working *with the key nearby while unlocked*. If the key were out of range (say 6'/2M), it would not open via the exterior trunk lid button. I'm presently running another map just for future reference. Now I'm not entirely sure the key was in range when I was testing before while the car was unlocked and that would be a question for other members if you happen to think about it. The test is with the car unlocked and the key out of range, does the rear trunk lid button open the trunk or is it unresponsive? My intuition would have been that the trunk would open without the key in range if the car were unlocked but that isn't the behavior my car demonstrates at present.

Kevin, the long coding section where our cars had different codes was in the section pertaining to the drive select so that may have been the difference, definitely nothing pertaining to the trunk or doors though.

i ve made a mistake by doing factory reset setting for ABS[03] on basic settings, anyone know how to go back to original settings. All the lights on dash showing abs, tpms, e-brake, esc and reverse sensor beeper also not working

If you had saved a scan of your system, you might try recoding it as per that. Failing which, here's mine for you to try

Thanks for codes and i didnt save the scan, should i send to Audi dealer as i m worried they will ask how i factory reset the ABS. Will the Audi workshop easily restore all the codes?

You could try performing "Basic Settings" on the affected systems and storing the information. I do not have a car to plug in to / reference at the moment as I am away so cannot assist very much but as things are a little messed up at the moment you have nothing to lose by trying. Ultimately tho, as this is safety related, I feel a dealer visit coming on. Audi will just plug your car in and down load the factory data for your car from their SVM system. Expect to be asked a good number of questions and to be charged by Audi for this.

Edit:

Just to follow up on the Basic Settings thing and to give an example, when I retrofitted Auto Lights / Wipers and once all coded in my DIS flashed up with an "auto levelling xenons" Basic Settings issue. To resolve this all I needed to do was enter basic settings for 55 perform the following:
  • Select Basic headlamp setting
  • Select Go
  • Let the car do it's thing for 60 secs (levelling unit / motors performed some adjustments)
  • Select Stop
  • Select Acknowledge Basic Setting and wait for the "Finished Correctly" message to display
  • Select Stop (Calibration data was then stored).
It could be for example that your electronic parking break needs to learn it's bite point again etc etc and will follow the same kinda of learning process.

Has anyone had any luck disabling the brake drying feature? The security code (20103) is initially accepted, but as soon as I do the coding it asks for the security access code again and then won't accept it?! Not sure what I'm missing here

Same here. Somehow if it's in the PDF of DjAlix is because he made it somehow.
I tried all security codes, some where rejected but none of them would allow me to modify anything in adaptation.

I was able to make limited changes within that module without issue using the 20103 code, but then my module stopped accepting this code for all but a few channels.

There was another forum member, cannot remember the name and really need to catch up on all my VCDS communications, who kindly took the time to try and map out all the codes listed within my document and could not find any matches for Brake Drying.

Now that I am getting braver in the use of VCP's more advanced functions, the manuals are in Russian and Polish, I am looking in to having a session with the softwares "Login Finder". Hoping to gain a full list of security codes in the near future.

New 2016 S3 owner in Canada dropping for post number one today, hi everyone.

I've pulled the trigger on a VAG CAN Pro today. To be honest I've no idea how long it will take to get here, but while it is in transit I have a lot to read up on. I've read all pages of this thread and most over at ozaudi. Looking forward to trying a lot of the mods on here. One that is of particular interest to me involves enabling audi connect (possible on previous MMI systems) as here in Canada we are locked out of it. It involved the green menu, hence VCP over VCDS for me, and potentially I'm looking at VIM later. Hopefully I will balance out any annoying questions to DJAlix by helping out being another guy with a VCP, trying things out, translating (! - German is not great but I have the patience to do some work here).

DJAlix, would you recommend other places to go and read up (if you are allowed to link that is). I am reading up on a couple of German ones to get started.

Hey, and welcome!

VCP is a good tool and it will do the same functions as VCDS (+ more) but it's not so friendly in it's use. Available manuals are only Russian and Polish :( VCP has just received a major update which has made it's features better but label support for the 8V long coding options are non existent, this is where VCDS shines and you will be referencing VCDS "notes" in order to complete mods.

VIM... In order to be able to complete this you will need to purchase the VIM add-on pack if you have not already done so. The website is not very clear on this :(

Green Menu on the 8V = Diagnostics and MMI Menu order / arrangement only it seems. The menu within our cars is very different to that of the A4/5/6/7 and Q cars :(

Would be great to be able to chat with another VCP user tho as there are not many of us about at the moment :)

Thanks for the welcome! I suspected things had been shuffled around with that menu when I saw your very helpful dumps of the green menu screens (thanks for that). I'm hoping that since most of the world has online services enabled, that the modifications Audi has made to the Canadian/Australian 8V vehicles are software-based and, eventually, reversible. I'm happy enough still going with VCP as it seems they are more willing to write functions that go deeper than the VCDS guys will.

Quick question: is data tethering from your phones an option in UK/Europe or does that connectivity rely solely on a data subscription to Audi? If the rest of the world can't tether presently, it will no doubt increase the chance of it either being cracked or permanently put to bed as impossible.

Audi don't provide any data connection, you have you put your own SIM in or use RSAP to tether off your mobile.

Thanks. This is a different setup to what the Americans have. I guess I'll need to understand more about how these Canadian vehicles are put together. The instrument cluster for example is kilometers only which has me thinking of parts coming from continental Europe spec cars, but as far as MMI goes I can only say that I see "WLAN deactivated" when browsing the media menu, and no SIM card slots (which on other models hasn't been a barrier to getting connected).

Anyway, this is not relevant to most in the forum, so I'll plan to keep my posts in line with what others are actually doing. I look forward to trying out window-rain-close and oil temp display to get started!

Some adaptations that might be of interest to you while you are waiting on your cable (within 5F-MMI):

(7)-Vehicle configuration-WIFI_Hotspot (on/off)
(26)-Vehicle configuration-Sim_card_mode_switchsim
(27)-Vehicle configuration-Phone_module_operation_mode (UK default = only data service active)
WLAN (on/off)

Yer, still working on Drive Select but fear there is an element of component protection involved :( To be continued...

As for the adaptations I listed I can only theorise as I have don't have a TechPack car to test with:
  • (7)-Vehicle configuration-WIFI_Hotspot (on/off) = Enable / Disable hotspot functionality.
  • (26)-Vehicle configuration-Sim_card_mode_switchsim = Dual Sim operation (UK factory default = Not present)
  • (27)-Vehicle configuration-Phone_module_operation_mode (UK default = only data service active) = Modes for Audi Connect / MMI Data Connection.
  • WLAN (on/off) = Enable / Disable WI-Fi.

Cheers for the explanations. I have a tech pack car so when i get a chance will give them a go. I know wlan is already activated on mine as I can connect my phone via wifi and use the Audi Connect app.

Counting on you in regards to drive select, so no pressure.

Right I'm looking for a radio modification to enable the stereo to remember a higher volume than 12 every time I switch it on. I have the b and o. Only looking for 13/14 nothing extreme.

@DJAlix could you see about my ops setup?
Apologies. every time I thought I had the time to sit down and investigate I got pulled away, and today is the first time I have been fully in "Audi" mode since New Years. Will message you shorty.

Brief update from my end. The VCP is here. In fact the speed of shipping was very impressive. Left Poland Wednesday and arrived into Canada at my house Friday afternoon. Unfortunately I have to contact support for them to authorize the device's "key" before it will connect and pull down the files to initialise...and they've been sitting on that since with no response. I've been told their support is painful, so I'll exercise my patience skills for now :)

VCP support is a little slow as it's basically one person, but Mac is very good and deals with all emails via a queuing system. You have come in to VCP at version 5, well v5.0.3 (ak 5.3). You could activate v4 via the Aktivator (file manager) but this has all changed with v5 as they are using new software licensing and protection. Took me 4 days to get activated during the upgrade.

Once support gets back to you, reply back requesting access to PR Coding and asking them to check that all available ZDC files for your licence type are active for download as sometimes support forgets to grant access to everything. Also, if you purchased the VIM expansion request that all the related ZDC files are made available. As a reference point, I have a VIM expansion, I have access to 175+ files via file manager. One thing to note, files cannot be shared as they are encrypted to your Key Card. Only scripts you create yourself can be shared, and thats good fun as for example if you wanted to retrofit front and rear parking sensors I could build a file (a macro if you like) to complete all the coding and adaptation, send it to you and all you need to do is hit go! I could even choose to allow you to view the process or hide it :)

Just one person? Wow, it helps to have that perspective. Thanks for replying to put my mind at ease on the delays, and the PR coding advice. I'm reading up on some of the scripting options and it definitely appeals to my love of hackery!

Yer behind all the "German and US" style marketing it's only a small team of polish developers and staff, slow but very good.

Where are you doing your reading on VCP? Most stuffs I find I need to translate and other things figure out for myself :(

Pull out the battery the other day and last day I checked I had this fault code.

Did the key basic setting but had no luck in the other basic setting. Also didnt check again after doing some km or refueling.
Anyone know if this DTC is gonna be gone or do I have to do the basic settings to get rid of it. It kept popping after clearing the DTC after conecting the battery again.

What was the reason for disconnecting the battery? Normally this DTC is related to an incorrectly set service interval. It's also been known to pop up if the service interval has been reset via the MMI and not VCDS.

Run a full Auto-Scan and when complete clear all the DTC's. Once done Uncheck the "Display Freeze Frame Data" option and run a full Auto-Scan again. It the DTC is still there it means there is an issue. If not there then take the car for a little drive and run an Auto-Scan on your return to see if the DTC pop's back up.

Most vcp stuff I'm looking at is on stemei - I'd say at this point I'm just observing the results of the functions rather than understanding how they are done.

Nothing more at this point than feeding off the links to forums in your PDF, and of course the PDF itself!

Although I don't think it's related I'm watching a thread on vwvortex where they are getting into the discover pro system on a Golf Mk7, just for interest. I will eventually get registered on the vcp-forum I hope, which I guess you know all about already.
