206 GTI wobble

The wife's been moaning about excess vibration through the gear stick while stopped.
I had a look on saturday and it was bouncing all over the place.

I very rarely drive this car and she only mentioned it last week.

Start the car up and let it idle and nothing will really happen.
The car will warm up a bit, the revs will drop and gear stick will start dancing around like a head banger on speed in a rubber room or some other such analogy.

I've got no idea why its doing this or where to start.
The car drives with the only issue reported that its hard to get into first.

Anyone got any idea what to check or where to look?

Gear linkages it is............How do you test them?

The engine mounts are all less than a year old.

Just get underneath when its running and look for where the movement is coming from. If its a rod type linkage, it should have a steady bar that links the selector to the engine/gearbox. It is possible that could be damaged, or if its coming from the gearbox itself (internally) that would basically mean a replacement gearbox.
