Tom5190's Dolphin S3 8P

I did consider the MY11s but these popped up at a decent price and they are pretty much un-used. I wasn't really too bothered between the too so the price was the main selling factor. I might go for a set of My11's later down the line if I can borrow some to test and see what they look like.

They still transform the back completely though eh... Still looks good...

Yea they look a lot better than the standards, need to get rid of the standard ones now cant see anybody wanting them!

I've just kept mine to be honest Tom... Possibly return the full car to standard when selling it, due to the ammount of folk that wouldnt want a non-standard example...

Yea I'll probably do that too actually good point. I've got a problem with selling cars.... I've never sold one! So I've still got my three previous ones. I've still got my first car I've had it nearly 7 years now!

Car passed MOT on Saturday.

I've not used this camera to take any night photos so I thought I'd give it a go tonight, the car isn't especially clean mind but looks ok in the photos.

Cheers lads. Me and my mate have almost finished putting his clio back together so I'll try again at the night shots in a few weeks with that.

The clutch is spot on now, it's well bedded in (around 2000miles iirc) The noise at idle is a little annoying when its cold but I don't notice it now if I'm honest. The only real noticeable thing is the resonating noise at around 2000rpm at part throttle but again I don't really notice that as I'm never sat in that rev range. I just need to get the power now to actually put it to proper use!

I did read about a trick of overfilling the gearbox by 0.3 - 0.4 of a litre might help dull the noise from the smf, needs verifying though. Good job mate. Would really love some good pictures of mine, need to crack the DSLR out.

Well to be honest I didn't change the gear oil when I did it as I simply forgot to buy it. I was planning on changing Gear/Diff/Haldex fluids at the end of this month so I might see some improvement just from that then hopefully. I imagine the box has done the car mileage so the oil in there is likely to be pretty old!

Not sure if that lower lip really suits the car. Was thinking about it for my own car but seeing it on yours has kinda put me off. Do you have any plans to lower it?

Yea after the bodywork, wheels, tyres & map I think I'm going to go for some KW's & some decent arbs with as many polys as I can get. That's probably going to be September time I would imagine though.

Car will be awesome Tom... Following this thread with great interest!

Lovely Car mate, Dolphin Grey is one of my favourite audi colours.

Cheers for the compliments! Feel like its coming together a lot more now especially with the decent weather I've really been able to unleash it and enjoy it. Here's another update.

So since last time I've done the following:

Oil & Filter change
Rear bumper lacquered
Both front doors lacquered
Front bumper repaired
4 x Michelin PS3's
Wheel re-furb

This leaves me with a few small things to sort out, Haldex oil & filter & a centre arm rest lid, then its finally time for an intake & a map.

The car is currently in 'Le Mans' trim for the drive over on Wednesday, this is only temporary of course.

Le mans trip was awesome, the car did really well on fuel and didn't let me down too much at the toll booth's! I've booked the ring for September and I'm going for a standard dyno run on Saturday so I can compare before/after the map which is coming soon.

Since the last update I've not done a great deal I've been working a lot lately and not had much free time. Here's what's changed:

Haldex Oil & Filter change
Glass de-wiper bung
Carbon dipped rear diffuser
Full paint correction
Arm rest lid clip
4-wheel alignment

Here's a few photos, I'm going to take some tomorrow night after work with a mate of mine so I'll update this with them too.

Lovely pics as always, needs some lows though!

Really want to put my DA over mine looking at that but its still too hot!

Cheers, I didn't do the correction I'd probably burn the first panel I touched lol.

I'll probably miss some but:

Valet pro Snow foam
Aqua-wax Shampoo
Valet pro APC
Valet pro citrus pre-wash
Wolfs chemicals Medium Clay bar
Aqua-wax QD
Various chemical guys Hexlogic pads - mainly yellow, red & green
Meguiars #101
Menzerna PF2500
Menzerna PF4000
IPA
Autoglym HD wax
Aqua-wax H2GO on all glass
Billberry wheel cleaner
Dragons Breath wheel cleaner
Auto finesse tyre dressing
Chemical guys wheel sealant
Metro-vack sidekick (Awesome!)

It does indeed need to be lower but I'm pretty set on the KW's so I imagine it wont be any time soon! I was going to get a DA for myself and go over it but i don't think it would have touched most of the marks on mine it had a fair few swirls and some really suspect areas so a rotary was the only option really.

Ha, there is a few dolphin grey ones on here. Its the standard diffuser hydro dipped.

Yea I really like the colour, it looks a lot better since the correction too. Yea it does look a bit different, its a lot more noticeable now.

Yes i would agree totaly, have you thought about geting the front grill done also?

Im looking for a nice grill at the moment but cant seem to find anything nice, or when i do it wont fit S3!! Gggrrrr

Yea I thought about it but I think it would probably be a bit overkill. I'm not a huge fan of carbon 'looking' stuff to be honest I just fancied seeing what the diffuser would be like. I want an RS3 style grille with Alu surround rather than the chrome one that's on there now.

Yea I seen that Xenons one, pretty stupid idea to not make one for the S3.

Cheers to the good comments!

Right so I mentioned I was going up to an RR. It was a group day so there was a large range of cars there. A few people seemed a little disappointed with there power figures early on the morning, and it was only getting warmer so I was a little sceptical. I had no idea how healthy or bad my engine was, I've never been in another S3, never seen another one on the road and couldn't really find any standard RR figures on here. Anyway long story short I was really surprised and happy with the figure considering most people there were under what they expected.

how much did hydro dipping the diffuser cost?

It was £50 for the dip.

I've not updated this in a while, mainly because not a lot has changed. I've been spending most of the time replacing OEM parts for maintenance stuff really & generally trying not to spend much money on the car.

So... I made it to the ring in September, managed 5 laps over 2 days and the car went really well, I was impressed with the PS3's and generally had a trouble free trip.

Unfortunately my GoPro mount that I had on the dash decided to 'un-stick' its self coming out of Flugplatz on the first lap so no videos :(

When we got back I thought it best to get a few service things out of the way & I decided I would get it mapped after Christmas so ended up changing the following parts before then:

Plugs
Oil & Filter
Air filter
HPFP Cam follower
Timing belt kit
Water pump
Aux belt
Both front brake disc dust covers (one was bent and catching the bottom arm when going full lock)

None service things changed are:
New set of genuine floor mats
Shark Stage 1 Map
Black coolant bottle cap
Black washer bottle cap

MOT is due again at the end of March, I need some rear pads & discs before then and I'm going to change the rear dust covers too as they are flaking & look tatty. Annoyingly the PS3's haven't lasted long and I need another set for the MOT so I bought them a few weeks back. I grabbed a few photos of it today as we actually had a warm day!

I didn't get a before & after of the map at Shark, & to be honest I wasn't all that impressed so I took it to the RR again today to see what the graph looked like. This is what it made & the second graph is the before & after graphs overlayed.

I've booked up for the ring again in May so likely to be no updates before then. Hopefully I should be able to get some good videos this time around. Plans before the end of the summer this year are:

Revo intake
TT engine cover
Whiteline front & rear ARBS
Whiteline anti-lift kit

Its been a while... to be honest not a lot has changed on the car I've been trying to save as much money as possible. I'll contradict myself by the end of this post though as the bugs back this past month.

So since last time I've replaced the following:

Rear pads & Discs (OEM)
Rear brake dust covers
Oil & filter change ( x3)
Rear O/S caliper
Rear O/S caliper pipe
Water temp sensor housing (more on that later!)
Front Brake discs (OEM)
DS2500 Front Pads
Brake fluid change
Oil Pickup pipe
Glove box lid & ram
R8 Oil Cap

So I got a new job a few months back, my mileage each week has halved which means I can comfortably do my journey in a **** box. So as soon as funds allow I'll be buying something else to run around in and this will become a bit more of a toy.

So leaving off from the last update, I went to the ring in May, everything above the temp sensor housing was changed before this trip (only 1 of the oil/filter changes.) Long story short it was a disaster, ended up in German hospital with my brother he was out of action the whole time we were there. I bought 9 laps & only managed 1 practice lap in the S3....

I came across a little problem mid way round which left my car stuck in the car park for 3 days. The water housing on the right hand side of the block had been repaired way back (before the first ring trip) due to getting cracked when I changed the clutch. This gave way mid lap, VERY luckily the car didn't over heat. I managed to repair the car & drive it home with a lot of tie wraps under the bonnet!

Anyway after this I had 8 laps left on my card.... so we booked a ferry for August, I changed the rest of the things on the list and headed off back to Germany over the bank holiday.

More of a successful trip... sort of. I managed 6.5 laps, the first 6 were spot on, not the fastest but the car was faultless & the trip in general was faultless. I did however end up with some severely warped brakes which meant I had to drop off ad Adenau on lap 7 it was unsafe. The discs are genuine discs from TPS. Anyway a few videos below:

2nd Full lap

Passenger view

My half lap - you can here the vibrations pretty well!

So I'm back in the UK, I've got to the point were I'm comfortable with the car & we've booked up for Germany again next April. I cant take it there with standard brakes I'm obviously cooking them way to easily so my plans are to go with a RS3/TTRS front brake setup. This doesn't fit under my wheels so I'll need new wheels (which is ok I need new tyres now again anyway!) So brakes wheels & tyres will be done before the next trip, id still like to get the ARBs changed too but I'll see what happens up until then.

Recognise the background in a lot of your pictures, you from Redcar way?

I advise getting AP Racing discs if you are going to continue tracking it. Mine certainly handle all the abuse although my pads seem to melt and stick to the discs causing wobble after 20/30 minutes of track time.

Suspension and ARB's do let the handling down massively.

Cheers for the heads up I may well end up giving you a shout I'm not sure what sort of pads to look at either.
