My car is only 3 months old with 2500 miles on it went to start it this pm it wouldn't start then gearbox malfunction wrote up on dash but safe to drive

Yes but it said I can still drive the car I can call audi assist in the morning
Have a look at Page 104 in your Owner's Manual.
Doesn't say much actually, just to drive to a qualified workshop soon and have the fault rectified.
Hopefully it's just a little hiccup and you'll soon be on your way.
Interesting to see what message may come up tomorrow morning - if any ??

Mine kicked this up tonight whilst shifting from 2nd to 3rd (1500 miles 4 months old). Was literally in the middle of nowhere, car switched from S to M and locked me into 2nd (couldn't manually shift up or down, neither would it auto-shift).
Limped to a lay-by and turned the ignition off and on, message gone, car seems ok.
Obviously I'll take it to Audi asap, but anyone got and insight? There was an almighty clunk when the error came up (and I was under some pretty hard acceleration).

I never worry about these things unless they happen more than once, if it resets with a simple ignition cycle then I wouldn't even bother taking it to the dealers, if it kept doing it then I'd take it in.
