Hello,

I have the above car and it has regularly begun switching the EPC light on on the dashboard which then turns off the start stop system with "start stop system fault! Function unavailable", also on the dashboard.

I have run Carista on it and I have 2 fault codes:

03041 - Energy Management Active - I think this may relate to the battery

14846 - Manufacturer Specific Code - apparently relates to Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor(?)

The car drives fine and appears to have the same amount of power it always has and is not going in to limp mode but the fault is coming up more regularly and I would like to get it sorted....

Any help diagnosing and fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Thanks for that, I will start with the battery. Is there a way to test the battery? I have MMI3.5G so I cannot display the battery level. Any ideas on that second fault or could it be related to the duff battery?

Stick a multi meter on the battery without the engine running and see what voltage you get.

Mine was 12.1, new battery was 12.4. Old battery wouldn't go above 30% in the last year according to the MMI, new battery in, 20 miles later at 100%

Thanks for that- just checked - 11.9 so I guess that would be an issue... was it a big job to change the battery? Did you manage to find a battery that wasn't a comedy price? It is an absolute monster stuffed under the spare wheel with a lot of stuff clamping it down and a wire coming out of the side of it going somewhere that looks like it is attached to the battery?! I also can't get a picture of the label because of all of the plastic coverings.

I've attached a pic for comparison..

Exactly the same as mine.

Remove the plug on the bottom left of the sub, 10mm socket to remove the 3 bolts. Slide up the tray the jack sits in. I think the spare wheel mount takes a 13mm socket (IIRC) same for the plate holding the battery in. Battery terminals are 10mm. Pull up (what I presume is) a breather pipe on right side.

Takes 5 mins to swap over.

To start with remove that plastic cover to see what battery you have. Might be AGM, or 020. If it is AGM, I suspect your's will be with stop/start that puts the price up i'm afraid.

I got same spec battery with 110Ah, but higher cranking power at 900A, which is fine via bro in law who works at a car spares place for £89 with his discount. Mate at drift bridge also quoted the genuine replacement part of 000 915 105 DL for £153.76 instead of retail of £207.79.

Thanks for your help all... I have a picture of the battery which is a Varta one with the same part no 000 915 105 CF and is 950A, my local parts store is a Varta dealer so I will see what they can do price wise but if they don't come up with the goods I'll give the eBay one a shot.

The breather hose on the right (pic attached) did yours just slide off and back on again? Any idea what it is for?

I am based in Bristol, I have Carista which I am hoping will clear any errors....

I'm hoping this will stop the EPC light coming on as well but I'm not holding my breath....

Breather hose just slots it and yes Carista should do it, worked on mine.

When you change the battery you can clear the codes but give it a 20 mile or so drive for the car to learn and then clear the codes (if they re appear) and that should be them gone then.

Hey there!

I have the exact same EPC light thats been coming on for the last few months but has started getting worse.

I also have "start stop system fault! Function unavailable", when the EPC light is on, also on the dashboard.

I have run Carista too and have:

14846 - Manufacturer Specific Code - Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor(?)

I spoke to my mechanic about it briefly, he said it could be anything to do with the turbo system (Cooler piping, airbox, air filter ect ect)

Have you noticed any change to fuel economy?

Thanks for your help so far all...

Mattpaternosta- mpg no worse than usual.

I had the start stop issue last year when the weather got colder and it has come back again with the EPC light this year as the weather has turned.

I spoke to a mechanic who hooked it up to VCDS and the error was present after I cleared it with carista, he cleared it again but it has come back again..

He said he would check the continuity of the wiring from the ECU to the actuator 1st as it was so intermittent followed by testing the ECU for hardware issues, after that it would be the actuator itself.

He also said if it went in to limp mode you'd be able to get a more definitive answer as to what it might be and the engine wouldn't/shouldn't go bang if I left it.

I am going to try changing the battery 1st as that is the only issue I can think of relating to the change in temperature.

I get the feeling this is going to be a tedious and expensive troubleshooting exercise so if you find an answer please let me know!

Personally I wouldn't be trying to fix in the future. For now change the battery, run the car, clear codes and scan a few days later.

I think you might find your problem may just disappear.

I think (and really hope!!) You are right, hopefully just a brain fart caused by a duff battery.

Oh please keep me in the loop of how you go with the battery!

I really hope that solves the issue and I am do the same!

Hi New memeber with the same EPC issue have VAG and code comes back without starting the car. I guess I should check voltage as car is 4.5 years old so battery could well be on the way out?

No update yet - no time or money to sort - A4 goes in to the garage tomorrow for a service and a check on the code. Will update asap.

14846 error unrelated to the battery and was caused by worn linkages on the turbo- so a new turbo... I pick the car up later and will be £1700 lighter.

If the car so much as looks at me funny after this its getting part exchanged for a Kia.

Hi Guys any update on the battery front I have this exact fault and taking it to a specialist he reckons it could be the wastegate actuator motor (Fix is a new turbo??After 50K). My symptoms are as follows I can clear code using vcds the start engine all ok. If I pootle around in Drive drining gently I can go many miles without light coming on across fairly flat terrain. So basically if I ask very little of the turbo i have no isssue. As soon as I use large throttle opening or come to a hill light comes on and start/stop becomes disabled. My battery is 4.5 years old but when tested is was finwe even under high cranking load. Any ideas??

57k - which you would think is buttons for a car like this and way too soon for a turbo to be shot.

I had the same issue as you - fine when on the move on flat ground, potentially for many miles, stop start traffic and hills the power would drop then the EPC light would come on and raise error 14846. Phoned audi for a turbo price just out of curiosity - £4407 :puke2:

Far out! Thats so annoying, did they give you any more details on the "worn linkage". Guess I have that to look forward to now :(

Mine has just reached 50 k my specialist is looking to see if we can get the actuator or maybe strip it down and clean in some way. If not go for a pattern turbo

New (reconditioned) turbo has solved the issue and the cars response is now a lot sharper and no EPC light.

Hi I have not done this yet. I have found a supplier for a new actuator£168. Also have instructions for fitting and adjusting. I am wondering about just adjusting the actuator rod. My vag is telling me that voltage is reading 4.7 and it should be 3.5 so I think as car seems to run well maybe I could simply adjust the actuator connector rod to give correct voltage again. Nagging doubt that it may be faulty so in 2 minds

Hey Andy,

I have just received my new actuator and looking to fit it. Is there any chance you would be able to forward me the instructions for fitting you have?

Would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi Matt
Sorry just seen this. I decided not to renew the actuator to start with but as the car seemed to be going ok that I would just adjust it to the correct voltage. This I have done a week or so ago. No more EPC light, car seems to be going fine no detected issues. Do you have VAG.com software as you will need this to setup your new actuator. This site needs translating from Russian but describes method to adjust new actuator. I have to say that target voltage was 3.5 and mine was showing 4.7 so it took quite a bit of movement on the actuator shaft to get to the correct figure.

I'd be very wary about adjusting that wastegate actuator control rod to fool the engine ECU into seeing the correct value at that point, normally that means a lot to the ECU as where the wastegate is positioned - and that might cause other issues with time.
