2010 A4 1.8 TFSI - New Purchase

Hi All,

I am thinking of purchasing a secondhand Audi A4 1.8 TFSI from a local dealer. The Car has 52k on the clock and is a 2010 (59) plate.

I have been doing some research and have come across what appears to be an alarming number of problems:

1. Excessive Oil Consumption caused by defective oil control rings.
2. Possible Chain and/or tensioner failure leading to valve and piston damage.
3. High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) cam follower wear leading to damage on the camshaft lobe.

Can anyone who has a 1.8 tfsi confirm if all or any of the above are true and if they affect any particular year or model?

Thanks in advance
John

Hi, i think the 2.0tfsi is more prone to the oils consumption than the 1.8. Though I've read some posts before of 1.8 issues.
- there's a big sticky tread on this , best have a read through it.
I've had 2 x 2.0tsfis and no oil consumption problems. Obviously you'll read about many people with the problem and getting it fixed FOC but how many don't have the problem and don't go on forums and voice that. I'm guessing a lot more than do have the problem.

Chain & tensioner has been known to fail, some recommend replacing around 115,000 miles for peace of mind.
Cam follower issues was on the older engine around 2004-6 , and I think that's not a issue now.

That's got pretty low mileage which is generally good , but I have had an Audi with low mileage that needed more work that higher mileage ones that were serviced more regularly .

Check service history is all routine , and maybe get dealer to agree if there's oil consumption in first 1000 miles he will follow it up at Audi on your behalf.
If he's confident and honest about the car then he should have no problem writing an email to personal warranty for this.
Other thing you can do is phone Audi and ask for its history and see if it's had new engine or piston rings.

Hi Klickflip,

Many thanks for your reply!
The A4 has been on a long life service regime roughly being serviced every 20k.
There is some oil in top of the rocker cover which could be excess oil spilt out or thin oil that needs replacing. It's due a service.
3 owner's is a bit high, with the last owner having had it for 18 months a bit low, which could suggest a problem?

I will call Audi to see if there has been any work carried out on the vehicle.

It's a great car, just don't want to buy a lemon!

Hello.. I got them the 1.8 b8 for a year and half now.. Bought it second hand as well. I've read and heard about all the mentioned issues and yes they did occur with some cars. Luckily mine is running perfect with no issues at all. It all goes back to the history of the car. Get it checked at an audi dealer first. Cause these things could be costly

Look hard enough and you'll find that pretty much any model you're thinking of buying has a history to regularly-occurring faults. So much so that it's possible to frighten yourself out of buying a decent car. As the guys have said, check the history of the car, make sure you get a decent warranty, but also make sure you don't spend all your money buying the car. Always have some cash put by for unforseen problems.

Hey, I have a 1.8tfsi i've done about 2400 miles and the on screen oil check shows its used 60% of the oil about 0.6L, is this normal? This means I can do about 4500 miles per 1l of oil, thanks.

I'm not quite sure honestly.. My car runs the entire service mileage about 15000km and the oil level drops 1 bar only when it's due.
