Hi all,

First post here :)

I've bought (on a whim, never owned a VAG before, Ford man) an A6 estate with the seemingly problematic multitronic gearbox. Cars done 89k.

Usual problem, after a mile or so the selector doesn't tell me what posistion the gear lever is in - unless it's in park. Occasionally the PRND will start to flash.
It won't always get reverse first time - it'll move on Rickover but rev doesn't have any effect. If I come out and go back into reverse it'll select a second time properly.

I'm gutted to be honest, picked it up last night and love the car, it drives faultless apart from this, it doesn't appear to be in limp mode, changes fine and I can use the manual shift as well with no problem.

What's the best option? The car has no history of a gearbox oil change - would this have any effect if I were to change it?

Or should I just sell it before I get raped by a garage?

Regards

The multitronic box should have the ATF changed every 38k.
Get it changed and see what difference it makes.

As said get the gearbox fluid changed, should have been done 3 times so far (every 38k or 4 years). At that age the cost of new gearbox from Audi may be almost as much as the car, a specialist auto transmission place may be a better bet than a dealer for both the fluid change ans also any other work. Hopefully they will try to repair rather than simply replace stuff to keep the costs down. BTW this is the wrong forum for your car. Yours is a c5 model (97-04), this is for C6 models (05-11)
