Morning all...

a mate of mine has just informed me that he has put a deposit down on an S3 8P and waiting for finance to go through.

He is 20 and struggling to get a quote for insurance. He can get a quote on a TTS and a black edition S3 but the normal S3 he seems to be struggling.

Is they any 20ish year olds on here with S3 8Ps on here...

if so, what insurance companies are you using, or even better, any insurance companies want to offer advise or know if you will be able to offer a quote...

cheers..

I really do sympathise with younger drivers nowadays. I really think their stance should be one of; 'ok, you're low risk until you prove why you shouldn't be'

Give the 20yr old with an S3 fully comp insurance for say £600 per year, but if there is any reason for the insurance company to act, speeding, racing, claims etc, then push it through the roof for 'that' particular driver. Don't tar all young ones with the same brush though. Having said all that, the robbing sods wouldn't make any money then would they?

I saw a lad get out of a Focus RS in newcastle the other day, he must have been around 20ish himself. I thought my god, how much is the insurance for that? It is ridiculous.

I hope your mate gets sorted out.

My renewal came in for my bike yesterday from bennetts. £250 fully comp. I just got the same level of cover from Swinton Bikes for £99.11. Go figure

I put a car on its roof at around that age, so its no surprise why someone that age may struggle to insure such a car - the risk is undeniably higher. EVen though im sure many drivers are less fool hardy than i was then !! Send me a PM and i will advise a specialist insurance broker who may be able to help.

The lad in question has owned a stage 3 corsa VXR for two years... Running around 250bhp and 280lb ft torque... Insurance was no problem...

thing that winds him up is, he can get insured on a TTS and a black edition S3 but a normal one is in a different insurance group apparently.

I can't get insured on one until I'm 21 and I live in a quiet area where farmers dogs peeing on your wheel are the only risk to your car.
It sucks but you've just gotta wait it out, after all the S3 is a nicer car than the vxr and alot of s3's get stolen.

With respect, you putting a car on it's roof has approximately nothing to do with how I or this 20 year old with an S3 drive... that's my problem with insurance, I get tarred with a brush because some people my age are dangerous. If it was anything else, we'd call discrimination and that'd be an end of it, but for some reason they get away with it. There are lies, damned lies and statistics - so young drivers have to spend 5 years proving that they are safe before I'm treated with any respect by these companies.

I agree with Gary, there should be a base line insurance amount, with well publicized differences based on car insurance group, numbers of claims and no claims discounts and address. And a 20 year old without any no claims bonus should be treated the same as a 50 year old without any NCB, the same as a 22 year old with 5 years should be treated the same as a 50 year old with 5 years....etc.

In no area of life other than insurance can we be considered based on factors as varied as age and (until recently) gender. Seriously, to group 50% of people together based on the presence of a penis together was the most ridiculous generalization I can think of. Age isn't far behind it... approximately 1/10th of drivers in the country get grouped into this "young driver" group and financially punished for getting a job which needs a car to get there.

Is it the fault of any one insurance company? No, is it the fault of them all together? Yes, completely. It disgusts me.

yes, he had a stage 3 corsa VXR at 18... He works as an apprentice engineer since 16 at a very good company and still lives with mum and dad. So now he is coming out of his time he is upgrading his car.

he has found a quote for £2700 now... He's looking at paying it monthly then cancelling the policy when he is 21 in July.

thing that is annoying, is the black edition is the same car with a few black bits and different wheels, yet he can get insured on that and a TTS, no problems.

Might not be much help but my brother has been insured on his BE S3 since 20
Was around 700 but is part of admirals muti car policy.

Im £900 for my A3 1.6FSI S Line at 18 :)

I never understand why people buy cars then worry about insurance... seems an idiotic way of doing business.

I don't know if it helps by much, but I have an Audi A3 2.0TDI (170) S-Line Quattro 07 and initial quote was 3.5k got it down to 2.5k by putting my mum on the insurance as a second driver. 3 hours after insuring myself for the 2.5k I get caught running a yellow (by an unmarked pig), 3 points, cancelled the insurance that I had just bought and tried to re-quote with my 3 points and I was looking at 4.4k.

I ended up getting it back down to 2.5k by putting my aunty on the policy as well (so 2 women drivers in the 40s-50s) and increasing my voluntary excess. If I had done this before I had the points my insurance would be 1.4k (or 900 with the higher voluntary excess). So annoyed. But the cover is with admiral which is at least a big company and not some dodgy unknown one.

I'm 20 with 3 years no claims and had my license for 2 years and 10 months.

One big thing I noticed is the fact that the quotes went up and down daily, in one day I saw the same quote jump by £400 with no details changed.

My advice would be to go on google insurance (really easy to use) and then get a few quotes going (well into the future so you're guaranteed them) watch over it every day and see how long you can get it.

Also, it might be worth going for the quotes with the highest voluntary excess as it means you pay less per year but just keep the amount it would cost you to "claim" in an account somewhere for a rainy day and hope that you never have too (which is what I am doing).

he bought the car because he could get insured on a black edition which was he same car with a painted grill and different wheels.

the insurance is sorted now so thanks for the helpful answers... :)

The lad in question is on here and enjoying his S3... :)

I'm paying £880 on my 8L S3 and I'm 22 with 1 years NCD. Go on a proper comparison website and see what you get. When you put where you park, try all the options and pick the cheapest. 4000miles annually seems to be the cheapest for me. Job, marital status etc all matters too. Corsa vxr and s3 are miles apart. Insurance companies care less about speed and more about cost. It'll cost them more to repair or it'll be more money to pay out for an s3 then it will for a corsa. Different types of s3 can be because of facelifts etc. or probably because they are retarded and have a glitch in the system. If you enquire then you'll more then likely get a quote. Hope that helps

Im 22, 3 years no claims 5 years driving experience.. Had quote only £522 / year for my insurance! i found that if i put me as main driver and add my mum who lives at same address under me it goes from £1550 down to £522 a year... Just by adding my mum!!

Thats via Admiral!

I have 4000 miles / year
Car parked on public road
Mum as secondary driver

I don't get insurance. I'm 30 this year and paying £1200. No points, convictions but not had insurance for 4 years. I had 3-4 years NCB before that 4 year gap but it's not carried over. I used to drive much older cars before my Audi and was paying £333 on a mk2 Escort with LOTS of mods and had one when I was 18 that was £400. Very tempted to get an older car on classic as it's a waste of money paying insurance.

OP - Tell your mate to get on the phone and call up or go online and compare prices so you can enjoy your weekend :)

I was told that the Black Edition equivalent of a car is classed as a different car (ie an S3 is one car, but a Black Edition S3 is not in the same category as a none-BE S3). Which makes sense - but the reason Black Editions are generally cheaper to insure, or so I'm told, is that because of this different 'category' they're put in, there's less statistics on that car with regards to thefts, crashes etc. So the insurance is generally found to be cheaper when compared to the more commonly found standard S3 (or whatever none-BE car).

Insurers will use anything they can to increase you premium... and it's a business so I'm not sure why people get so worked up about it. The only problem is that it's mandatory, so if the lowest quote you can get is £4k then that's what you have to pay. I'm with Steve220 though, I get quotes before I even start looking for a car so I know when I find the right car I just have to green-light the policy and I'm set.

As for Napbree's little tale - running a yellow isn't a crime unless you accelerated very quickly to catch it (ie drove dangerously/recklessly), or it was in fact a red you ran in which case you deserve the fine and points. If you have points then you're a higher risk to insurers and therefore have to pay more. And there's no need to call the Police "pigs" either, they caught you breaking the law so you show them animosity and call them names?

try all the options and pick the cheapest

Be careful with that, the same as with your job. If they decided to check that your car is actually garaged, and you don't have a garage, your insurance will be void and you could be facing fraud charges. Pretty unlikely in real life, but worth considering.

Ive got an S3 8P3 Facelift but had to wait till I was 21 for insurance. I had NO chance before my 21st, most wouldn't even touch you if the car was over group 25.

I then got insured on 21st birthday for £1100 with 3 years no claims with Sainsbury's Bank insurance. Would have had more but I wrote off a corsa-c when I was 17.

All in all thought I was over the moon with the price, because the previous year I had been paying 1300 on a Corsa-d 1.3cdti

Try it through moneysupermarket (Ive found that to be the best comparison site), but I was getting quotes north of £4,000 when I was 20!

Good luck

I'm 43 in May, been driving since my 17th birthday, passed my test October 1987. Owned a car pretty much since then but I had a spell when I had company cars and not one of my own.

Apart from a windscreen claim for a crack I have had one claim ever and that was against me when I apparently nudged someone's car manoeuvring at snails pace in standing traffic. First I heard of it was when the rozzer rang and said I had been reported driving away from the scene of an accident ! They demanded I hand over my insurance details but would not tell me anything about the other driver or his insurance company. I eventually found out he had an all white ford and when I manoeuvred round him I brushed passed his bumper and left a mark. Tosser. Copper who rang was an **** too, like he ruled the world.

18 months ago I was sat at a junction and was hit from behind by a disabled driver. He said he didn't see me dispite my brake light being on as I was stationary. Virtually no damage all it needed was rear bumper skin painting. Went through his insurance he accepted full liability. 6 month later my renewal came through, up from £300 to £470 ! When I rang they said I was a bigger risk "because I had been involved in an accident". Cancelled my insurance and got it for £290 with protected ncd, courtacy car etc and only £50 excess. Pays to shop around, every year I look very hard for best cover at best price.

to be honest uk insurance is the higher insurance i have seen in my life and totaly stupid
in morocco car will be insured for the engine size and year and fuel
be 21 or 50s will be same remap or whatever nothing changed have an accident or not still nothing change
here in uk if you need to put different alloys wheels you need to ask insurance that just rubbish really

Not sure if it'll be any use to your mate still.

I'm 22 got an 8P S3, mine is £680 ish with elephant and 4 Years NCB As with a post above mine was high until my mum & dad went on. Admiral offered me the decent quote and elephant matched it as its the same company.

Just got mine, well last week. 20 years old, 1 NCB, 'Yes Insurance' .... £1800 fully comp. Paid in full.

Easy.

Its rare that they ever check. My whole time with insurance, ive never heard of anyone being checked, its called taking information in 'good faith' so if there was ever a claim and it was on the driveway, then the claim would be repudiated. This is why when insurers ask they should ask, "where is your vehicle parked most of the time" as sometimes people may park on the road for whatever reason. With occupation, its best to pick what suits you the most but that doesn't mean engineer and electrical engineer aren't the same as really he is still an engineer except one may be more expensive. that's up to the insurer to dig deeper and ask "what type of engineer are you?" Aslong as you don't make a blatent lie and everything is true then you'll be ok.

I bought my S3 at 20 (nearly 21) and went on an Admiral Multicar policy with the mrs and this was about £1500 and her car was peanuts! (3Y NCB)

This year as the admiral renewal increased, ended up with Sky Insurance just under £1k with Stage 1 map & exhaust. (4Y NCB)

All of the time I was Full Comp in a NW postcode, hope this helps him get insured.
