Well after yesterday’s door mirror glass falling out, today the instrument cluster has gone down.

when I say instrument cluster, I still have Rev counter and speedo, but the all important square window between them is totally black with no display.

this being the one that displays,
Miles left
Outside temp
Speed
Consumption. Etc etc

I’m guessing this is likely to be a costly one?

any ideas or anyone who’s had similar and got it fixed??

thanks

So its black on ignition cycles too?

You sure you havnt just turned of the dis?

Hi, no don’t think so. Had the car 3 months now and driven along roads of various surface quality, smooth/ bumpy etc never been a problem until today and on the point of it going black was on a good smooth road.

however since posting this thread I’ve been out on several short journeys this afternoon. It has suddenly come back on for about 3 seconds and gone off again.

it’s been on/ off several times and is currently on when I parked on the drive.
I have noticed there have been occasions where it appears to be trying to come on, and there has been a faint flickering background glow, then gone black again, then suddenly back on again.

ive a feeling this will be a bad connection/ loose plug connection? That will probably involved a big headache stripping half the dash out to get to it, only to find nothing obvious, and no doubt breaking something in the process......... may have to live with it ??

next time it comes on if you press the brake and horn at the same time your car will take a screen shot....this way the image will be there for good :grinning:

I managed to catch my wing mirror glass hanging on by a thread just before it fell off, so managed to glue it back on to the backing plate with decent contact adhesive, done both sides. My screen also went weird 1 day, it just turned completely white, cycling the ignition didn't fix it, but leaving it turned off for a few hours seemed to work. I guess when the car went completely to sleep, the BCM started from cold, fixing the issue

How old is your battery, and what's the state of charge in the vcds scan?

Hi,

No idea tbh, not had proper chance to look at it. Not sure what vcds scan is? I don’t have any scanning tools. Not had a look at the battery either, car starts very easily, so hasn’t prompted me to look.

I’m going to an Indy specialist in new year for a map, so I’ll prob get him to take a look .

I don’t relish the prospect of having to take dash to bits to get at the dis.

Does anyone know of a reputable Indy in the derby/ notts area.

I phoned the guy at just vags, killermarsh. Who states he doesn’t repair DIS units, but gave the number of a guy in hull that did.

bottom line is I have to remove my clocks, obtain the correct part number for the DIS, then obtain a working set of clocks in order for the guy in hull to program the replacement DIS to my car ????

this sounds a right faff to put it mildly.

How mobile? Country wide ?

I’ll see if I can find him and have a poke about after tea, just got in to find the waters been off all day.

I’ve not had any response yet from NHN, although I don’t know how often he checks in on the forum.

since my original post the DIS seems to have totally died and has been totally black/ blank for the last 3 days.

as such I phoned Derby Audi to see what they said, costs, labour/ part etc.

ive just come off the DeFib ! £120 for the 1st hour of diagnostics then £198 every hour after.
Can’t see them identifying the problem in 1st hour, so assuming 2-3 hours, cost of part and labour then vat, I can’t see this being resolved much less that £600- £800.

I’ve asked if they could supply me with a part number in hope that I can source either elsewhere or used?

surely there’s got to be a cheaper fix?

My Audi ownership is getting better.

Derby Audi parts dept phoned me and advised that the DIS is all part of the instrument cluster and is a sealed unit, so basically I have to buy new cluster.
The price........£1358.60. Wtf!!
No mention of that includes vat, I’d assume not. Then there is the labour aspect? Plus programming it to the car, and I can’t see them wanting to fit new clocks without insisting on doing diagnostics first.

the only way forward that I can see is to source a used unit, but it has to be the same part number and then find somewhere that can program it to my car

try and find second hand, just make sure it comes from a car with the fully loaded mmi like ours that way there shouldn't be any problems.....but also you have to be careful of buying from scrappy as there's an issue with component protection apparently!

I know I have to buy one with the same part number . Main dealer has already told me there were many variations for the year/model so part number is crucial.

what do you mean re component protection? And scrappy? You basically saying don’t buy from a scrapyard/ breaker??

Don't know anything about component protection, but avoid breakeryard.com is my advice, it's basically the equivalent of speed-dial to a complete bunch of charlatans. It's just an interface to the Mitchell Brothers of breaker yards.

Sorry yeah I meant scrapyard, it's fine if you have the right part and the donor car has been scrapped for engine failure or something else but I'm pretty sure that I heard something about car's that had been insurance write off's through either accident or stolen and later recovered had "markers" on them and coding to another car is either impossible or very problematic.....I could be talking 4r5e though so I'm sure someone with the correct info will be along soon

If you are "lucky" buying from a scrappy that can check parts before stripping them out can be okay, component protection is there is avoid people stealing parts from cars for resale or stealing cars and breaking them up for parts.

If you are unfortunate enough to buy any protected item from a car that has been declared stolen then there is a very good chance that Audi Mothership has that info logged, so when you submit your car to get CP removed it will cost you the standard charge and the garage should inform the police that you are handling stolen goods - if they don't then Audi UK should report this to police, though I'd doubt that much would happen if anything, but that stolen unit would remain unusable. New items that have CP are virgin units so when fitted will connect to a car and that change will be passed to Audi Mothership, used but legal units need to get their current CP removed so that they now look like virgin units and can be connected to your car etc.
I have bought a used radio with DAB and it did end up being legal and CP was removed to allow it to work in my car.

Can you get get someone to scan yor car with VCDS or similar, even Carista and if there is any life in your unit it should reveal its part number etc, if it is really dead then you need to remove it to find its hard ware part number and maybe even its S/W number from its labelling. Either way you need to get up to speed with re-coding to your car to complete the task that a garage would do with some savings, this will be a big job if you take it on, Audi should find it easy to do as Audi Mothership will have lots of configuration and set-up on that individual car.

So basically you’re saying I can’t buy used clocks even with correct part number and have them programmed to my car??

You can but the part needs to clean as mentioned above not on the register for being stolen. If you were to buy the set from matey with he recently deceased Dynamik they would be fine but you would need someone like NHN to recode them to your car....the best way to make contact with him is to private message him and he would then get back to you with his number and then communicate via WhatsApp

Also there's DJAlix in the coding section that may be able to help or even be nearer to you...

Speak with VAGPro UK in Leicester, a coding partner of mine. They can host a session in which I can code in any unit you purchase as long as it come from a genuine source and not flagged as stolen etc. Khurrum has also had DIS issues fixed in the past.

Please note that if you are going down the replacement route then an authorised VW group services partner, like myself, will need to see all keys, v5c, photo ID and proof of address.

Ok pal, that’s fully understandable and not an issue. Thanks for the offer of help, I certainly need it.
Where would you suggest the best place would be for a replacement? Obviously I need it fixed, MOT not due until June 21 but I spent a ton of money on my old car and can’t really afford to be having large outlay on this one.
Incidentally while out in the car today, it came back on, but about a mile later went off again?

could this be a sign of bad/ poor connection or simply a sign it’s about knackered and the only way forward is to replace it?

You seem to jumping ahead on this, have you pulled the clocks yet to have a look and make sure it's not something like a poor connection or a split ribbon cable?

Can anyone confirm if just the DIS has component protection or if its only the whole clocks?

Even if it does have CP, it's easy enough to get removed, I paid £40 to get CP removed, you just need to go to a garage that is an authorised ODIS user with a GeKo license.

You can pick up second hand clocks for less than £30, if you couldn't get this sorted for less than £100 doing the work yourself / £200 if you need the help of a decent coader, I'd be very surprised

That’s starting to sound more promising

I’ve ordered a set of trim / panel removal tools. If I take the clocks out, am I likely to course more problems for myself if I were to disconnect them??

or am I best just leaving the cabling connected and make a note of the part number?

thanks

I haven't pulled the clocks on mine, so not sure how difficult it will be, can't see why disconnecting them would cause any other problems. I've pulled loads of my car to bits to fit front and rear cameras, MMI high upgrade, android auto/ apple carplay add on, ect. Take your time, watch some YouTube video's and remember, refitting is a reversal of the removal.

Just bare in mind that if you disconnect a major component like the clocks, even with the ignition off, you will trigger a load of fault codes that will need to be reset. Handy to have OBDeleven or VCDS ready to test and reset

Boundy has a totally valid point there, personally I'd do as he's suggested i.e. watch a few tutorials if they exist and I'd gently pull it all forward and give as much as you can see a visual and gentle wiggle check....

I’ve viewed a few vids on you tube, as such ive ordered trim removal tool set. Don’t look too difficult, once the clip in plastics are out the way, 3 screws from what I can see
