I'm going to look at a 2.5tdi sport quattro of the estate flavour.

Its a 2003 car, 83k on the clock.... what should I look for? What sort of real world MPG should I get?

Whats a fair price for a 03 car 83k, full leather, satnav, bose etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

We have these one is 03 manual and second is the triptronic both desirable in this weather so prices may be firm cos they seem to have held steady since we bought in early 09.They are hard to find with low miles and obviously should have full history and cambelts etc changed and if I had to find replacements I would look to spend about 6k manual and 7k trip if in good colours with just over 100k as ours show .Both have good tuning boxes fitted so the manual gives average mpg of 35 but well over 50 is poss but the auto is more like 30 because it uses more revs in traffic and cant be driven lazily like the manual in high gear using all the torque available on these smooth engines .Have you consider the 1.9 quattro more to choose from and higher mpg

I'd love to agree with Mike and say I saw 50 mpg! But thats never happened!

Mine's a 2003 manual with a DPT tuning box which gives an extra 2-3 mpg I think, and my all time average is 33. I never do any motorway work living down here, and drive the car pretty high, so I imagine with more general driving I might see late 30's - the 2.5's are never economic though!

Make sure at that mileage that the timing belt, and all ancillaries including water pump and thermostat have been replaced. I can't help on the price, I'm a bit out of touch there, but browsing ebay/pistonheads/auto trader etc should help.

35mpg avg, low 40's on a 70mph cruise....

lovely, lovely engine... but consider the 1.9TDI if mpg is really important.

Have to agree with the above comments- it's a lovely, lovely engine, as lostbok said.
An 03 auto Avant 2.5TDi QS with low mileage, in good order, with a high spec and FSH has to be worth £7k.
I see 32 - 35 average (depending on how I'm driving).
Oh, and BTW, the 2.5TDi QS is great fun in the snow!!

Def 7k for an auto with low miles and good spec but you need to be sure you can handle the mpg.The manual DIS will show over 50mpg cruising gently and its not unusual to see mid 40s on a higher speed long run without too much traffic but I do accept James that the DIS is regarded as aborn liar by many but I dothe numbers when filling up and assume that the miles are about true

I found the DIS ave mpg is about 2mpg lower then the real world figure, and I believe they can be re calibrated.

I agree with the below comments, mpg isn't excellent with the 2.5, but if it's all about economy then you really should be looking at the 1.9's. My car has been remapped and I use mine both on motorway runs and sitting in loads of traffic in the morning on the way to work, so on average I see 32-34 mpg, but I do quite regulary see 47-48 mpg on a long motorway run. Awesome engines which sound great when you get the revs up, it only sounds like a diesel on tick over and very low revs.

Do check the history though, ideally you'd want to see short service intervals throughout it's life like I was lucky enough to find as the cams can wear on these engines quite easily if always serviced on long life intervals.

The timing belt and water pump with aux belts is another major thing you want to look for, at that mileage it should of not long been done, if it hasn't, walk away as that's a £700 bill! I've just had mine done and it's around a days labour to do, front end has to be removed to access the timing belt.

Another job I've just had done is the number 3 injector, it's not a 'common' fault on these engines but the specialist I use to service my car said he has seen it a few times over the years. I had an irratic idle where every now and then it would idle between 800 rpm (normal) and 1200 rpm, which made it sound like it was racing. It's to do with a sensor on top of the number 3 injector, unfortunately you can't just buy the sensor on it's own, it comes with the injector, and it's a total of £300 for the sensor and injector, it takes about an hour to change and then the injector has to be coded to the ecu and fuel pump, so in total it's about a £450 job.

Check the diff oil has been changed at regular intervals as well, it's quite normal to be able to hear the torque transferring to the rear diff on gear changes, but as your looking at an auto it may be different.

Hope those points help.

Quattrojames - They can be re-calibrated as I'm getting mine done by my specialist, my gauge and dis keeps reading 0 miles left in the tank when I have about an eighth of a tank left, I usually drive it around for about 3 days showing 0 miles! It will cost me an hours labour at £70 to do.

Mine reads 0 miles when there is about 10 litres left in the tank too, how is the recalibration done? Can it be done with VAG-COM?

Yeah I'm assuming it's done with vag-com, but I'm pretty sure the tank has to be virtually empty to do it.

That warning is supposed to come in with about 10 litres left.... it's supposed to be the "start looking for a garge" warning.... not the "too late, you lose" warning....

I think what the guys have been talking about ealrier in this thread is how the real world mpg (miles travelled divided by number of litres consumed divided by 4.54 (coversion to gallons).... versus the mpg as indicated on the full DIS compter, which can vary.

i've only checked mine twice and it's been within a few percent - I think one over estimated by about 3% and one under estimated by 2%.

Its had the cambelt done, as long as it'll do 35mpg on a 250mile motorway run with the wife and kids i'll be happy. Is that too much to ask?

This is the actual car..... it didn't sell as a description and pics weren't added till the last hour and it needed collecting the next day due to the current owner going on holiday. Its just been used as a family car and it'll be doing the same with me. Although a few higher speed trips by myself will take place! :)

2003 AUDI A4 TDI QUATTRO SPORT AUTO BLUE on eBay (end time 28-Nov-10 16:22:10 GMT)

I seem to remember that 70-75mph cruise = 40+mpg, it should cruise fully loaded at around 85mph at 35mpg easilly. 100mph cruise sees it drop to 30mpg.

The 35mpg that most people average in the V6 TDI quattro's is a fair mix of trafic, A-road fun and motorway druising. Expect it to be <30mg if it's pure bumper to bumper.

only just got to look at the link: nice car - good price for that combo of mileage, TDI, estate, auto, quattro + leather!

Its costing more than that though but not near the 7+k a dealer would want for it :)

Its got a couple of niggles but nothing an ABS sensor and service won't sort. I prefer honest cars if that makes sense!?

Yeah, as Lostbok mentioned I was referring to recalibrating the DIS ave mpg to read more accurately - in honesty I'd probably not bother as I use it more as a day to day, like for like comparison than for scientifically accurate figures. They're always too low anyway!

When my DTE gauge runs to zero I can still only get 60 litres into a 66 litre tank, but I'm happy with that, I don't fell the need for the engine to start coughing at zero!

You mention ABS sensor, do you get 3-4 quick flashes of your ABS warning with beeps on startup? If so i'm led to believe that it is just a warning for low voltage to the abs system, caused by the cold weather. Mine has been doing it for 2-3 weeks since the weather took a turn for the worse. It also doesn't do it after a bit of a warm up. Did the same last year too and disappeared again in the spring.
