It's literally the easiest job in the world, takes 5 minutes! As said above, put a pair of gloves on and yank the ******** off lol. I found twisting whilst pulling helped them come off with minimal fuss really. So glad I did it, it sets the car off!
 
OK Soooo, collected car today after 2.5 weeks after having the full engine replaced, which I am delighted for by the way but, I have a few issues that I need to take up with my audi UK case manager.
Call me ungrateful but here goes.
Firstly on collecting car I was expecting a big wad of invoices to put with my service history... But no, just a service sheet saying, engine oil consumption test failed, inspected engine, engine found to be no good replaced engine.
Secondly, I asked if i could have the new engine number to contact dvla about, the lady went to ask and returned to tell me that the new engine comes blank and the dealer stamps it up with old engine number so won't have to do anything.
I found that odd but anyway, and,
Thirdly, driving home i noticed my air con does not go cold as it did, so they obviously have not regassed the system,
Fourthly, they have put the ****** back on long life servicing which was the first thing I changed when I got the car.
Fifthly, I enabled the oil temp and lap timer using carrista previously, and the engine oil is really hot in comparison to the old unit, highly likely to be normal as everything is tight and only covered 22 miles but I thought I would mention it, my old unit used to peak at 102 after a spirited drive or stick to 100 and below during normal driving but rapidly cool to below 98 when parked up letting the turbo relax, now when static after a slow steady run to run the engine in, never above 3000rpm when parked the oil temp just rises from 102 upwards! Upto 105!!
This maybe normal, or not, I do not know!!
But on looking at the lump, it definitely seems new, with lots of bright shiny bits such as the chain tensioner, block, belts cam cover with obviously my original turbo, alternator etc bolted back on etc which I expected and it feels a lot newer, I.e the clutch is really soft, the engine is really quiet and not tippy tappy like before and even the steering feels a lot heavier and steady which I like.
So all in quite impressed, and I am a fussy ******, so will see what audi UK can say
 
My car is in at Edinburgh Audi at the moment , A4 2.0tfsi 63k 1 previous owner, 2 Audi history and 2 Audi specialists with all oil and parts on reciepts saying to Audi specification , the car failed the test and they got back to me today saying that Audi are paying 100% of rebuild but They said under the condition that I paid £310 for a full service at the same time as it had not been serviced in the Lookers Audi group before , I really think this is unfair as its not due for another year and on the rebuild it will be getting oil, filter, coolant and plugs so I am being asked to pay £310 for an air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter!!!, I said this to them and they just said that was the condition, what should I do or say ??!!

I would say no personally, but firstly I would give audi UK a call first, let them know the situation and let them pull the strings.
These are the people who control the dealership franchises and carry so much clout it is unreal.
Get an audi UK case manager on your side and let them do the talking.
Your car has already failed the oil consumption test, so your nearly there.
 
Contact Audi UK and explain your concerns. Say you feel you are being held to ransoms. The Audi UK guidelines to this case clearly say that the customer must not feel that Audi or the dealers are profiteering in any way over this matter.

At the start I phoned Audi uk and said it was using pile etc and they told me they new about it and to make an appointment at a branch to get the test done , I then did and it failed and now I have been told the above, I phoned Audi UK yesterday when I got home (all be it , it was 6.00) but the person I spoke to couldn't see anything on there system under my name or reg???, I found that very funny !! If Big Bird is reading this I was needing to speak to you about it as I see you took yours into Edinburgh . Oh and another thing, I am very ocd about keeping my car clean and when I was yesterday I had said to M that I had washed his courtesy car a couple of times and he said they had washed mine 3 times , just to keep it clean all the time, when I was leaving I had a look round the back to see my car and to my astonishment it's never been washed since I dropped it off!!!, they did the test miles for me and it's been lying there ever since , absolutely black , covered in flies on the front and covered in bird poo now!!!!!!!, he clearly has not told me the truth about this so what else is not right !!!
 
Get back on to Audi UK re the servicing. If you go back to the early days of this thread there is a copy of the instructions that were sent to the dealers about how to handle this matter. Even if Audi UK can't find your reg on there they can always register it again

Are people getting the tensioners changed at the same time and are Audi paying for it, I asked the guy at Edinburgh to change it at the same time and he said they check it but don't change it as part of the repair, is this correct and has anyone else that has used Edinburgh had it changed as part of this, thanks for all your help folks
 
They changed it on mine without charge. I did have to ask for it though.

never mentioned a thing about tensioners when i got the Widow done, as above my "invioce" baiscally said naff all in the way of details either, so i don't know if it was done as a matter of course. the car only had 29k on her at the time, as i recall so it might not have been an issue anyways?
anyhow, just clocked 38k at the weekend coming back from London Film Con, and still haven't put any oil in since the fix!

Hi guys and gals,
I'm new here so bare with me.
Bought a 2010 A5 1.8 TFSI a month ago 66k miles. Unfortunately didn't do any research (must have been the preconception that Audi will only deliver a proper manufactured product). But life has decided to throw at me (yet) another 'adventure' full of stress now that I know that my engine 'drinks' a 1L of oil at every petrol refill.
The car doesn't have a full service history with Audi, two of the last ones done with an indy. Tomorrow morning I'm picking it up from Audi Jack Barclay in SW London to do the first oil consumption test (this is sooo stressful). I'm halfway through the posts on this thread and will probably finish all of them before I call it a day.
Any advices on what I should do are more than welcome.
 
not much to do bud except wait for the result and see what they say. as far as i've followed this, Audi have been pretty generous w/ people who have not had full dealer service, i think the general rule seems to be as long as you've kept up w/ the servicing no matter from whom, you'll be ok. if the dealer does make a decision you don't like, have a talk w/ Audi UK, they seem to have decided in favour of several people.
i know what you mean about the stress, this all hit literally months after my warranty expired, lol, but honestly, try and chill as i think you'll be fine.
 
A bit sad to hear that Edinburgh Audi are playing silly games, but there is no local competition, Lookers Group are a bunch of "not so goods" - body shop? "yes sir, just drop it off and we will take it across to a wild and dodgy area near Glasgow" - in other words, no body shop facilities! "Always use Audi for MOTs as they are trained to do things better" - no, they off load them out to a nearby place, as I said in my summary of Edinburgh Audi, all show and no go - but plenty Audi owners on their door step so what do they care? Parts guys are always helpful, car movers always meet and greet you and move the car when in for service - even approaching the car as you drive into the car park. Service department annoyed me a lot by promising a reasonable turn around time and failed big time with no excuse or apology only a couple of hours late for a timed booked service, idiots!

Edit:- I seem to remember getting an introduction letter from the new head of operations, she seemed to promise much, but still same old same old.
 
No cam belt tensioners AREN'T replaced free even though it's a known manufacturing fault! (They are meant to be designed to last the lifetime if the car!) I had to pay for mine although I got a substantial dealer contribution.

With the proviso that if an, ie my engine was getting rebuilt FOC, I'd be extremely willing to pay for them supplying new chain tensioner etc.
 
Absolutely! It makes sense to have it find at the same time. I would have paid to have had mine done at the same time as my engine rebuild had I known about the issue at the time.
 
Yeah, and I didn't. I stupidly asked them to get the engineer to look at it and tell me whether it wanted replacing rather than just insisting! Flipping idiot :(

God knows how much it will be to do it now.

Interesting thread this! My own A5 (2.0TFSI Convertible, 2010, 43k,) was only bought by me on 30 June. The Service History is 3 Audi stamps, 2 Indie, 1 Mercedes Benz, the last one at the point of sale to me..I was oblivious to this issue, but from picking up the car (and therefore its' last service) I've done 350 miles - and the oil topup warning came on. Strange I thought, and mentioned to a colleague who told me about this known issue. Panic set in and some frantic googling revealed the truth. I topped up and called Audi UK Customer Service. A very knowledgeable man (Aqeel) confirmed that my car could be affected and directed me to my local Audi centre (Edinburgh Audi). I've since been in and they were very helpful and booked me in for an Oil Consumption Test on 07 September ("no slots before then sir..."). The agent at Audi UK said that the test would be FoC, so I've assumed that to be the case. I did ask if, in the event of it failing the test, any repair would be FoC, and they held back from saying so directly, and that it would depend largely on Service History. She did tell me that only 'a few' cases have had to make a contribution as a result.

I'll keep you posted as this progresses...hoping on the bright side, that I get the car I wanted at the end of all this...

I am in the process of buying a used Audi Q5 in the UK, and have found a nice 2.0 TFSI example on private sale, but having read this and other threads on the oil issue feel it might be a risky purchase.

It was first registered in late Nov 2011 with engine code CDNC. There seems to be a consensus that Audi had fixed the issues with the engine around mid/late 2011, so am hoping this may have come after the fix was implemented? Is that likely given the timings between order/build/delivery/on-the road? Is there any realistic way of checking this?

The current owner has said he's not noticed any problems with excessive oil use, of course it may not have kicked in yet. Car is on around 40K miles and has full Audi service history.

Aside from this issue the car ticks all the boxes, but I can't help thinking shelling out on it with the risk of massive future hassle is pure madness, whether Audi ultimately fix it for free or not (and that doesn't seem 100% guaranteed).
 
Alright folks, can anyone that's had the oil consumption test done and failed and then engine rebuild confirm that they also got the valves, inlet manifold and exhaust headers all cleaned in the process, these will be very bad with carbon build up with all that oil getting passed the rings , can you all post as I need to know to take this case forward for us all
 
i can't confirm as the worksheet i got basically said ****** all, which is odd as they usually itemise everything.
could the oil/carbon build-up also affect the turbo?

wouldn't mind taking forward the fact that some people got x years free servicing too, maybe you could tactfully mention that in passing!
 
Yes I noticed that about the years of free servicing, they tried to get me to PAY for a service when it was in, I said no way and phoned Audi UK about it, not paying now, my car is still in , it's all been done but the service from them has been absolutely shocking !!!, , I said I was not taking the car just now and wanted stuff sorted out, when it was finished they phoned me and said that it had a clutch judder and the peddle was a little high!!??, this was not like that when it went In!! And they did the oil consumption miles in it and other mikes, they have done about 700 miles in it and had the engine out so I am not paying to get the clutch done !!!, having it out with them just now
 
700 miles, were you warned about that maybe being the case. I'd be very surprised about them doing that mileage without customer consent. Though not being involved with this engine at all, I thought that you booked it in, started the running to check for oil consumption, at the end took it back, they then chatted with Audi again and then contacted you to bring the car in for repair, contacted you to collect the car, you run the car for an agreed period/miles, get back to them confirming all is well or not - etc etc. Having them use the car for 700 miles sounds like someone needed to repeat the consumption test for you? Holiday rental car? that happened years ago a friend booked his car in for some work to VX when they were still in Lothian Road, he went skiing in Aviemore, it was spotted by a friend while they were up there and he confirmed it and chatted to the guy who had hired it, that caused a bit of a problem the next week! Edinburgh Audi, I don't think are that stupid, though there must be some other good explanation - mind you, they are run by Lookers Group?

Edit:- I would have thought that running a customer's car for 700 miles would place the dealership at too high a risk of some come back in the shape of new damage, or new wear and tear by claimed by the owner - as seem to be what has happened in your case, why would they want this extra angst on their plate?

It was Audi that did the miles in the car for the oil consumption test , not me, so with that and all the testing its been around 700 miles , I was promised a phone call on Wednesday from a manager about my complaint and all the problems I am having and guess what, no phone call and this is Friday !!!
 
Can anyone recommend a way of me finding out if my cam chain tensioner is in good condition? I really want to remap my 1.8TFSI having had the engine rebuilt by audi but don't want to put the tensioner under more stress if it's knackered.

ok guys a little update,
car is back, air con fixed and 300 miles into the run in period.
the air con issue was a corroded sensor apparently, replaced free and everything is tickety boo.
sorry if it seems i am gloating, especially to those having issues, but below are some images that prove that audi uk are fixing these cars, i cannot urge you enough to get them on board before approaching your local dealer about this problem and getting a result.
audi uk are your guardian angel on this, i cannot stress this enough!

So after reading through this thread I'm just wondering do I need to do anything as I have a petrol 2.0 TFSI. 05 plate with 96k in the clock full service history. I have recently done a 300 mile run with the oil level not dropping at all. Is still the same level as when the car had full service and cam work done. Is it a have of when it will happen to me or if? Also is there anyway to check if the work has already been done to my vehicle.

So bit of an update from my camp...

I've had the Dynamik for about 8months now (2011 33k), originally bought from an independent dealer but had previous Audi service stamps in the service book. The dealer told me the engine fix had been done which was basically a blatant lie as I've been putting in around 0.5ltr per 3-400 miles. I wasn't too concerned as I took out extended warranty when I bought it for 2 years and the repair would have been covered under this... just an almighty hassle getting and independent warranty company to deal with Audi :whip:

I have to say in the 8months I've had it (now @39k), I would say the oil consumption has been steadily going up... on the motorway you definitely get more miles to oil than around town so it was hard to judge when I first got the car.
I've now gone through more than 8ltrs of oil in less than 6k which is a joke given all previous cars I've owned have barely had a "thimble" of oil in-between 10k services!

I had it in for the Oil consumption test a few weeks back and it failed requiring new pistons/rings. I've been having sleepless nights thinking about the £5k rebuild costs and maybe having to contribute but had a call from Manchester Audi this morning and my car is booked in at the end of the month for new Pistons/rings etc.... all Free!!!!!:yahoo:
To say this is a weight off my mind is an understatement!
I heard a rumour that they were stopping paying out on cars older than 5 years but it's all been approved!

The car is fantastic and I would have been gutted to get rid because of this but it seems Audi are still honouring the repairs it seems. (mate has an A5 and his got done for free at Bolton Audi).

If you are in doubt, get the Oil consumption test done asap! Those on the lookout for a second hander, make sure it has Audi service history and you should be ok

Has anyone managed to get new chrome tail pipes off their dealer at the same time as getting the new pistons etc, mine resemble an oil burning diesel at present!
 
A little bit of topic as mine is just back from Edinburgh Audi getting the new bottom end rebuild, it's done and working but have to say I had an awful service from them, got told things were getting done and they were not , only found out because I proded more into it, anyway has anyone fixed there problem with the shudder in the steering, spoke to a mechanic and he said it was a known problem and that it was the pump that could it keep up with the demand and that there was no fix, reading on the net it seems as if there is a new pipe people have been putting on and it seems to fix it, think the part number is 8k2 422 893 dh, any one fixed this problem and is that the correct part number
 
Funny you mention that, mine had that slow speed notchy problem if that's what your referring to before the new engine, and now it's fine, I was half expecting it to return.
They may have changed the pipe perhaps?

Hi folks, does anyone have there invoice with price for repair in it as I got them to do a detailed one on mine for me and it only comes out at £2674??, it's seems a lot of people are saying it's about 5500??, I just want tamale sure everything has been done that should have been done if mine is about half the price
