That's what I was going to do. However Audi are not stupid. They daubed some kind of white paint on the drain plug so they would have known if it had been tampered with.

Only way to do it is to suck it out of the dipstick tube

    Well, mine is done!

Long story short for any new readers.....

2009 plate, 61000 miles and full dealer history. No warranty. Started using oil, had software update and PCV valve changed, 623 miles later it failed test.

Audi have replaced pistons, rings, con rods and all associated parts.
When it was in, they found the FOS wheel bearing was worn, and play in the steering. This was traced to a worn intermediate steering linkage, which they replaced. Car in for 9 days for which I had a A3 on loan.

Total cost £6500 and some. Cost to me? NOT A PENNY!!! No arguments, no haggling, no nothing. Very upfront and very honest.

Brilliant service from Edinburgh audi - I'm over the moon with their approach and their service.

That sounds a great result, well done.

Mine passed the test, disappointed and not 100% convinced with the second check... Warranty runs out next week so I guess will have to suck it and see

call me a cynical of tw@, but what's the "Software update"? it's not some trick to alter engine performance and thereby oil consumption to get around having to do the rebuild is it?

Is there an age limit as a friend has a 2007 TT that uses quite a bit of oil.

Audi informed me goodwill only applies up to 5 year old, but will depend on a case by case basis.

So finally got the car back today and so far all good! It's definitely a case by case basis but things are looking more positive for all...
Have to say that Cardiff Audi did do a good job overall but it was a frustration getting a hire car!
I have noticed already the engine is smoother and more responsive. Also the new exhaust tips are still sparkling!!
No cost and the invoice was made out to VW warranty even though it wasn't in warranty. Nevertheless it saved a bill of £5500!
MMI not moved yet either but early days. Will keep you posted!

Yes, their attitude to customers is okay, though maybe creepily OOT, I rather the straight forward down to earth honest "what you see is what you get" approach, when I had my S4 in for MOT, service guy met me as I parked and immediately took the car away, then I needed to run the gauntlet of the "pretty ladies" meeters and greeters etc etc - you do have to jump through loops before getting to the service or parts person! Paperwork and car were ready at the agreed time, which was good, garages in general seem to take hours to complete the paperwork, I never ever did understand that!(that was Ford+VX+VW experiences)

Google Audi TFSI 2015 then add oil. A new model doesn't need any bad publicity. It's not just Audi but the whole VAG group. I'm still astounded at today's engine technology we as owners need to forum over an engine that if made as designed would never had got this much attention. Audi need to sort the previous and current engines before bringing out a 'New' batch...
Also nearly all the engines fixed are out of warranty but are classed as! I have one from a few days ago from VW!

I believe the issue is with engines built specifically between 2009/2011 though? Not the current engines?

Yes, however how many of these engines are yet to be fixed. Yours is one of them! It will only get worse. Iv never topped up a car with oil since the got hatches of the late 90's!
It has been tempting to trade this in but it is a good car I believe in!

It's all about promoting a bit of positive publicity!
Who would bring a new model out with so much negative feedback about an engine that is still being used with modified parts...
Anyway that's me done, I need to top up the oil and clean the exhaust ;)

A5BlackEd, the problem is Audi now needs to deal with its history, actually to be blunt, VAG now needs to deal with its history, an awful lot of people interested in cars, and so potential customers, are reading about this huge incident which covers all VAG marques and at least three engine sizes.

Think about it generally, Lancia made rust buckets back in the '60s/'70s - that killed that company's sales worldwide, with just home sales keeping them going - very few people were willing believe that Lancia would be change its way and make proper cars which I think they did.

VAG's future in part should now rest on them putting things right and displaying that they are now addressing these issues, which are "bringing to the market place an untried and/or unproven product" - these VAG engine failures/problems are not a fluke - they are a result of incompetence by a group of responsible key people at VAG putting their salaries before their company and its buying public.

I believe, from another VAG marque forum that this 2.0TFSI engine scandal has now been discussed on BBC Radio 4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b051w062 , so at least the 1.2TFSI and 1.4TFSI engine users know they are not alone - though currently they do seem to getting very poor treatment which is costing them a lot of money!

Edit:- I'm not suggesting that VAG will vanish completely because of these problems, but their market share should be shrinking back to what it was 10 or so years ago, and that will bring on the need for change - not good. I think that I've said before, I've only ever bought a car for myself that had an Audi engine in it (B5 VW Passat 4Motion 2.8V6 and B8 S4), buying an Audi with a VW engine in it can be risky, wife's car, being cheaper/smaller is a VW with a VW engine in it, the future looks like replacing it with another small VW with a 1.2/1.4TFSI engine in it - that worries me a lot and is the main reason why she is sill running around in a late 2002 Polo 1.4!

This issue has now appeared twice on BBC Radio 4 consumer program You and Yours:
    18/Dec/2014 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04v5fjk
    13/Feb/2015 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b051w062

If your 2.0 TFSi has high oil consumption, contact Audi Customer Service on 0800 699 888 before you do anything.

At 4.5 years, 40,000 miles, mine was using 1 litre every 3-400 miles. I was initially told the work would cost ~£5000, but there may be some goodwill from Audi which could halve this. Following the oil consumption test, I was told Audi had agreed to pay for 100% of the parts, and my local dealer would reduce their labour rate, bringing the bill down to around £1800. I said I would be calling Audi Customer Care, but didn't bother when I received a call stating that Audi UK had reduced the total cost to £699. Which I wasn't particularly happy about, but paid as it was a lot less than I had originally been quoted.

When I discovered that some people have had to pay nothing, I contacted Audi Customer Care to see if they would refund my £699. I was told there was nothing they could do, and that I should have contacted them before having the work done.

Currently going through the escalation process, will let you know how I get on...

Very intresting. Mine was 4 years old, 26,000 miles, with a FASH and bought privately. My initial quote was £2500 but reduced to £2000 after I spoke to Audi Customer Care, I still wasn't happy so my local Audi Dealership threw in 2 free serivces. This all happened last August and I've still been following these threads quite closely. I am noticing that more people are paying less so I plan to contact Audi to see if their stance has changed and whether a refund would be possile. It will be intresting what they say considering that I did contact customer sevice before the work began. Out of curiosity, when did you have the work done?

Consumption test was December 2014, repair mid January 2015. Mine had two Audi services, then one from the independent dealer I bought it from. The deal also required me to buy the Audi service plan covering the next two services, but at £150 I thought that wasn't too bad. And they let us have an A6 3.0 Biturbo courtesy car for 9 days while the work was done.

R88, £699 is still a lot of cash! - That's over 4 yrs service on long life service with extras,

I'm sure you should get something back!! By the way I contacted Audi UK very early too in my case. Don't listen to any dealer offer regarding "Goodwill". Most dealers are now franchises so it's VAG who foot the bill anyway. I know as I have a bill and will happily post it showing it was covered by VW warranty?!

I can't believe since starting this thread on the 6th Feb how many comments and views have taken place so far in the last ten days! 1200 views and counting....

This must be a positive thing now!! Please keep them coming!!

Audi/VW and other manufacturers do review these posts, especially the most active ones!! Things are most definitely happening in Audi/VW UK. I feel I alone ruffled a few feathers there and at Cardiff Audi - xxx ;)

Those of you that have had the fix earlier in the engine life and have suffered with the costs I feel sorry for you and the brand. Those of us who have had it done in last two months it's been pretty much free like mine (apart from tests). See my above post about the forth coming B9 model! Still a coincidence that it mentions the new model and new TFSI engines!

By the way mine still smokes a lot from the exhaust but I think it's a bit cleaner now and hopefully just cleaning the pipe. My last exhaust tips looked like fossilised dwarf feet! Not sure if it's all down to the 'cold' weather hence another thread on the B8 forum appeared about 'white smoke' recently and that included S4's. However it's the MMI I'm watching without anticipation! It has dropped slightly but not sure if it's due to the new top end just beddIng in and adjusting. If not I will be requesting a brand new engine next time!!!

The sooner that Audi become their own brand again the better like their previous great cars, I have at least five now. My first was an Audi Cabriolet from 1998 nearly new - what a great car, it's a shame as at the moment no Audi is great especially this TFSI engine as it wasn't made by them but specifically for VAG......

Any one got Anne Robinsons mobile ready?....

The smoking is interesting Mike J

Mines at the extent that the tail pipes look like they belong on a 15 year old diesel bus and when cold and under acceleration I cannot even see out of the back window for white smoke. Surely something wrong with mine even though it has passed the oil consumption test by only using 0.14l per 600 miles ( threshold for failure is 0.5l per 623 miles)

Strangely enough the last few days my car has not smoked at all. Not sure if it's down to the slightly warmer weather or that it may be that the fix has now bedded in. Also after a long drive the tail pipes are still clean and the Oil level is still at max.

Had a call from Audi UK today to close the case and had confirmation that the fix does come with a 2 yr guarantee on parts.

    Hello,

So I have a piston problem too - '59 plate at 95k miles.
It had 3 audi services, and 2 general garage services.
What is the likelihood that I can get them to cover some of the costs?

evelyn13 - Get the car booked in for the consumption test and contact Audi UK and register your case. They will liaise with the dealer on the result and goodwill. Most cases mentioned on the forum this year have had the fix done for free!!

wolfie138 - Give the car a bit of a thrash. Driving on motorway in 4th helped but not the fuel consumption!! Sure the MMI will start dropping. Anywhere under half way and the car will fail and need a rebuild.

ianv5 - Have to say the rebuild on mine does seem to have done the trick like yours! Very little smoking only on start up now and still at max on the oil level.

I have noticed the amount of active threads in the A3 8P forum mentioning oil consumption with the 1.8 TFSI. Audi customer services must be getting concerned with the amount of calls their getting lately...

well, i'm not one for abusing the car just to get some work done, to be honest. i'm not happy about the fact i've done 25% of the test and there's no drop so far, yet the last time i topped up i got the oil light about 400 miles later, but knowing my luck i'd flog the ar$e off her and possibly takes years off the life of some part, and still pass the test so i'd have knackered something for no gain! i'm running the test legit, see where it goes. i might need another oil test down the line, or Audi might have done some sort of recall in the future, but i'm logging everything so i know the full picture. if she passes this time, i'll have to have a talk over w/ someone because i'm still convinced summat isn't right, given the black tailpipes etc, but i'll cross that road when i come to it.
