2.0 TDI Lumpy idle and white smoke when cold

Hi guys,

2.0 TDI BRE.

I’ve got an issue with lumpy idling and white smoke when the engine is cold. The issue goes away once the engine is warm. I’ve looked at the injector correction vales and it’s seems to me cylinder 4 could be a potential issue. The worst value when cold on injector 4 was 1.58mg/H, dropping down to 0.3mg/H when warm (see pics).

Maximum torsion value is -1.47*KW so I think the timing is fine.

What might cause an injector to start at such a high correction quantity, only for it to drop to a normal value when warm?

Any help or insight would be much appreciated!

Not doubting you might have an injector issue, but has your car been smoking long?
At this time of year cars always "smoke" on warm up, it's the water vapour in the exhaust.

Thanks for your reply The car definitely smokes more than it should do, you can smell its diesel'ey fumes coming out, my previous diesel had similar symptoms when an injector failed. I'm thinking it could be injector 4 that does not fully shutoff, or allows too much fuel past causing this.

Contact avon tuning, they know how to fix this. Something to do with camshaft timing and egr.

Someone on here had theirs fixed, mine was same, I don't have the car any more but here is their reply when i asked about fixing it ..........


Sounds like a typical PD170 cam timing issue.


We can 100% resolve this for you! Its a very common problem and we have people travelling from all over the country on a regular basis to have this issue resolved by us. The smoking and rough idle during the warm up period is caused by a cam timing issue and some times exaggerated by a sticking EGR.


We charge £200 + VAT to rectify the CAM timing problem (small adjustments made to the inlet and exhaust cam using VCDS diagnostic tool) We also include with this an EGR delete to completely resolve the issues.

Unless it's been assembled wrongly how does a cam timing alter, is it due to wear?
