Hi guys,

I've been reading through old posts regarding the Loba/Sachs performance clutch kit for the TDI but I'm trying to find the cheapest deal around at the moment.

Car broke down the other day and my current southbend setup has disintegrated causing gearbox failure at the same time. I currently have a bill for £1100 for a recon box and labour so I'm trying to keep the cost of a clutch kit down as much as possible. I forgot to ask the garage what state the fly wheel was in and whether it needs replacing but I'm thinking I might as well while it's all apart.

So I'm after a SMF and performance clutch kit that can handle 220bhp and 330lbft. What's about and where are the best prices?

Have a look on darkside developments mate, they do a fair bit of performance stuff for the diesels.

Cheers guys. I think the one that sounds best is the:

Darkside Single Mass Flywheel (SMF) & Clutch Kit for VW 02Q 6 Speed.

Would like to see if I could get the price down a bit.

I saw TDI man had the following list of parts so I'll see if I can get a deal on them:

SACHS COVER PLATE - 883082 001422 (NEW PART NUMBER)

SACHS DRIVE PLATE - 881864 999502

SACHS SLAVE - 3182 654 150 (NEW PART NUMBER)

SACHS FLYWHEEL - 2294 000 113

***! Why don't companies list the full price on their sites! I thought £750 was steep enough for a clutch kit but went to buy it anyway. Went all the way through PayPal and on the final screen I then get told that VAT wasn't included and that it will actually make the price over £900! I refuse to pay nearly a grand for a clutch kit.

Anymore suggestions guys or is this really what I'm going to have to pay?!

Well, 1 year and 15K miles (normal driving) on and this clutch has started to slip! Apparently rated to 400lbft of torque and a life expectancy of 50K - 60K miles!

Not best pleased. Can anyone recommend another clutch plate that has lasted for them?

Sachs are usually pretty good, but can fail,as yours obviously has.

If you want something unbreakable, then you might want to look at either Spec or Southbend, and Backdraft or AMDTuning might be able to help you with those.

Both are SMF setups and will handle huge amounts of torque, assuming they will fit your car,but you are correct on price unfortunately,as these will set you back around £1200

What I don't know is if either make the correct clutch for your car.

Thanks Alex. I had a southbend clutch kit on before hand and that failed and took the gearbox out with it. I wouldn't mind so much if I tracked the car or drove it hard but most of my journeys are either 30mph traffic areas or 70mph motorway cruising!

OK...sorry about that.

I can only speak for the Spec Stg3+ on my own car which has been totally reliable(so far) over 30 000 miles, and seems happy enough with 540lbs.
It's a daily driver as well.

No worries, I think i've just been extremely unlucky. The Flywheel and pressure plate is only 15K miles old too so I'll just replace the clutch plate with something compatible. I'll contact Darkside/Sachs regarding the failure and see if they can help at all.

I do know of a few Sachs organic failures, but they're usually related to drag style starts or not being bedded in properly, and other than that an occasional random failure.

Sachs I used can take 550nm

Good man thanks. Car goes into the garage for investigation on Tuesday. If a warranty claim can be had it'll be for a straight swap on the whole kit. SMF, pressure plate and clutch rated to 400lbft. If the clutch is actually worn (which I cant believe) ill look at the part numbers you've posted above. Thanks for the info buddy.

Just did a quick search for this clutch plate and on the DS website it says that part number is only good for 355lbft!

http://www.darksidedevelopments.co....-disc-for-6-speed-02q-dual-mass-flywheel.html

This is the kit I have fitted but it doesn't list the separate part numbers like all the other kits for some reason. Supposed to be good for 400lbft/540nm:

Just about to drop the car off, so I'll get the garage to grab all the part numbers as I'm wondering if I have a different clutch plate to the one advertised.

Ok, so I have news....

The garage (general local garage) that fitted the clutch kit last year have over done it with the grease on the spline. This grease has splattered all over the clutch. So I have a new clutch plate and pressure plate on order. Very annoyed but at least I now take my car to an Audi specialist again so these guys know what they're doing. Another expensive lesson learnt.

They should know what they're fitting, and be able to advise, but the Sachs organic is generally good for around

Glad it's been diagnosed and a fix is on the way.

Learning on these cars is costly.....

Going to pick up my car today. It was meant to be ready yesterday but they fitted the clutch and box, fired up the car to be greeted by a loud screeching noise so had to take the box off again. They found that the brand new clutch release bearing they'd just fitted was missing a piece of metal that was rubbing on the clutch plate causing the noise. Ordered new parts and they only turned up today, so now all fixed.

Hopefully this is the end of my transmission issues. :)
